Parents constantly deal with the problem of their child demanding candy at the store and threatening to throw a temper tantrum in front of a crowd. This book could be used as a preventative lesson to your child or help reinforce your stance. It teaches you child respect and clearly tells them that they will not get what they want if they are acting in a poor manner. It can promote your child acting properly and help parents and child maintain a strong bond.

This could be used in a classroom if yo...more

★★The Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmies by Stan and Jan Berenstain
The cubs are no different than kids, the more they get the more they want. As usual it starts small, like a sucker here or a small toy there. But soon it's gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. This not only is annoying, it gets expensive, fast. The plan, only buy them one thing a piece, on every trip. But what gets the cubs, is seeing another cub throw a tantrum in the middle of the supermarket.
I suppose this teaches a lesson on not being greed...more

Summary: The Berenstain Bears are back for another crazy adventure. Each of their stories has a lesson to learn, and in this one, the young bears find out why they should not be greedy. Their parents struggle to show them that appreciating things is more important than having everything. Sometimes learning a lesson the hard way is the only way to learn at all.

This is a story of brother and sister bear, from the Berenstain bears wanting everything they see. When their parents tell them “No”, the bears throw temper tantrums. Mama and Papa bear teach the cubs about the family budget, and the importance of appreciating all that they have, already.
I LOVE this book, my daughters get a case of the Galloping gimmies themselve, so to say the least this phrase is used quite a bit in my house!

I really liked this book; I think it has a funny story line that students can relate to. It is a little longer so some students may not have the stamina to finish the book but it is still a great book, even to just read the pictures. Recommended for first to fourth graders.

Brother and Sister Bear learn a lesson (as does Papa who couldn't remember until Gramps reminded him that once upon a time HE had a pretty bad case of the gimmies) about greed and patience when they become increasingly out of control in public, wanting everything they see.

This book is actually very interesting. I would recommend it to readers of any age. It is a really fun read and is easy to understand. The book is about greed and the need to want more instead of being grateful. The two young cubs also show the maturity at the end of the book. Overall it was a good book.

I learned that developing unhealthy dependencies to material goods and habits can lead to excessive expectations and ultimately to a disordered sense of reality. Additionally, that my discontent is directly proportional to my lack of gratitude.
Jennifer
This is a good book about not being a greedy person. It also teaches that sometimes you don't get everything you want. This book would be good if you class needed a lesson in not being greedy and/or sharing

Brother and Sister Bear have gotten used to getting whatever they want when they go out. When Mama or Papa Bear try and say no the cubs throw an all out fit until they get their way. This case of the galloping greedy gimmies has got to stop. Mama and Papa get some good advise from Gramps and Gran on how they had handled Papa Bear's greed gimmies when he was a cub. While I don't totally agree with the way the bear family stop the gimmies in their tree house it was a huge step in the right directi...more

This book is brilliant in its descriptive power. The illustrations, the observation of the Berenstain's situation at the store. We studied this as a case study of behaviorism in pop culture.

In my childhood bookshelf I had a Random House book called The Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmies. It was a fun book on learning about behavior when it comes to obsession with things and the desire for more and more to an unrealistic and unhealthy level. Now, readers are blessed to have a new book retouching the topic with a Christian message in it by Mike & Jan Berenstain, Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Things.

I love this book. It really helps when you're trying to teach kids how to behave in public. Great read, as usual - I haven't had a Berenstain Bears book disappoint me yet.

When a cub's behavior
takes a turn for the worst,
it's hard to parents
to know what to do first.

The Cubs start throwing tantrums when they don't get what they want.

Best Berenstain Bears book. look at Mama Bear's face there. Oooo. Just from looking at the cover you can tell this book is going to be good!
Kelly
Great book for teaching about the fact that you don't always have to GET things when you go some place and that Parents CAN SAY NO too.

My parents made sure this book got burned into my head at a young age....I definitely have a childhood love for this series!
Kristin Hamley
My son is really taken with this one. Feels like a nice antidote to the greedy period that preschool-aged kids can go through.
Nicole
While I like the ideas of addressing the gimmies, I don't like the solution of bargaining for a treat on each shopping trip.
Shannon
"Shannon 1989." This book made me. So. Uncomfortable. Public temper tantrums? Nooooo waaaaaay.
Michele
This is my favorite of all their books...It helped us a great deal with the gimmies lol!
