Wow, so as many of you can see, this is not my usual fare.
This was recommended to me by a friend (that's you Jackie) and I was told that this book would appeal to the YA group who wanted an older cast of characters. Since the main reason I don't read YA is that I actually get irritated with the teens, I thought this might be a nice change. Stella, our protagonist, is 24. This was a great start to a new series.
Stella Mayweather is a 24-year-old woman who has grown up in foster care and is searching for her place in the world.
Life has been even more difficult for her, because accidents keep happening around her, to people that threaten her or make her afraid, which of course caused her to change several foster families.
Not that she can really control it, but her reputation as a "witch" on account of that, is more literal than she would More...

Well this started out promising. No really it did. I liked Stella at first, liked the plot with the Brotherhood killing off the witches. Liked how Stella was suddenly dropped into a new world with new characters, new rules, and a new way of life.
Sadly it all derailed like a damn train wreck. In the end though it was another cliche filled book with a heroine who is an idiot, secondary characters who never get more than a passing glimpse of a personality, and a predictable plot that More...

Stella is pretty much a loner, not by choice but because it seems like accidents seem to happen around her and she doesn't know why. I really loved how Stella progressed in this book from a quiet, hide yourself in the corner kind of girl to finding confidence in herself at the end.
What I loved about this story-line it kept me guessing, here I thought it was going one way and it ended up in a direction I didn't expect at all. Usually the bad guy is brought in and pretty much you know wh More...

Illicit Magic began with a narration that continues on throughout the book. It isn't one of those annoying kind of narration but the kind thats actually very captivating and really makes you listen to what the protagonist has to say as she tells you her story.
Our protagonist here is called Stella, she's the type who keeps to herself and has a well collected character. She is English and alone. All her life everyone seems to be scared of her because something always manages to happen More...

Right now, if I could, I'd love to read the second part of this series just because I really want to know what happens next to Stella.
But first thing first, you need to know what I'm taking about, right? Illicit Magic is the first book of this series and introduce us to Stella, a simple girl with a simple boring life, and not because she wants a boring life but because everybody is scared of her so they keep their distance.
Why? Well, as you can guess from the title of the book More...

Stella has accidents, some could consider it clumsy but these just strike most people as odd occurrences. People are wary of Stella, keep their distance - why befriend someone who has strange and weird things always happening to them or around them? This always leaves Stella on the outside of everything and with no one to trust. When suddenly her life is in danger and the witch hunters are closing in - she has to trust Etoile and Marc to help keep her safe.

I loved this book at first it was a little slow and at times there was too much detail but it was ana wesome book I love how Stella came together with Evan and even her friend ship with Étoile, marc and kitty. I look forward to the next installment Because now I want to know what happends with Stella and if her and Evan work out. How she fairs in the new house and town.I need to know more . I am hooked on this series. I would have given this book 5 full stars but the beginning was really slow

I had a little trouble getting into Illicit Magic at first. The first 80 pages or so are a lot of new information that wasn't quickly digestible for me. However, once Stella gets to America the pace really picked up, and I was glued to the pages.
The characters in Illicit Magic are very well written, and I enjoyed learning about each of them. Stella's life since foster care has been terribly mundane. She didn't have any friends because people noticed that she was different, and they More...

This took me a a while to get into but once I did, this book kept me well up into the morning hours (which speaks volumes as I highly value my sleep). By the end of the book, I was left wanting more. I want to see how Stella comes to fit in her new world and develop her general witchiness. There is also the matter of finding out what happened to the others, Evan in particular. This was well written, unique and entertaining. I am definitely going to read the next installment: UNRULY MAGIC.

I loved the book, but there were weird typos all through, and very strange expressions such as "It was sat on the shelf," "They was sat at the table." I read all the Amazon reviews and comments before I bought the book, and someone said perhaps the English speak like that. No, they actually don't. If you are irritated by unusual, weird expressions, then this book might irritate you. I looked past it as I enjoyed the read.

Excellent book for the price ($.99 at Amazon). Will absolutely be reading the next in the series. Setting starts of in London, then switches to the US. However, the vernacular doesn't quite make the transition. It was jarring to read things like "bathing costume" instead of "bathing suit" being spoken by supposedly native American English speakers. Otherwise, very entertaining! and worth my time and money.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Very entertaining, good pacing, and I liked the characters. Main character Stella first comes across kind of sad and lonely but upon meeting Etoile has her life suddenly changed for the better. Watching her learn to handle and use her magic as a witch under the tutelage of a hot teacher named Evan was insightful and being privy to her humorous thoughts was very entertaining.

True story, folks:
She has always been a very open minded person and although she did admit that sometimes she was a little too harsh on people, she tried to work on it. So when Illicit Magic asked her if she wanted to pick it up, she had to think about it.
"How old are you, exactly?" she asked and Illicit Magic didn't really answer. She looked at it's face, murmered "Urgh, Young Adult. Go away." and that was that.
She's not a big Young Adult More...

3.5 Stars
Very surprised with how much I enjoyed this. The beginning was a bit slow and uninteresting and I honestly thought I wouldn't like it but by the end of this book I loved it.
The ending piqued my interest for book two which I'll be starting immediately.

Pick it up. Read it. Enjoy it. Buy the Sequel. That's pretty much what happened to me. Stella is an engagin character and the events are seat of your pants with enough romance and mystery to keep you coziers and romancers going. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because there was so much left untouched to be discovered in the coming books, that I just wanted it to last longer.

This book is about a young, English girl - Stella - who has had a rather tough life. She knows her parents are dead as she grew up in the Foster system. When she is rescued in just the nick of time, she learns more about herself and the magic she inheireted from her parents.

Interesting story but unfortunately it begins with several info dumps (hence only 2 stars).

It started off slow, then it picked up. Pretty good. Will check out the next. Team Evan.
