I had to reread this because I couldn't remember what it was about. The writing just wasn't good. A lot of time was spent telling more than showing. I thought Nate's turnaround was a bit quick and Quinn calling him 'baby' practically every dialogue exchange was annoying. And I don't know how their dirty talk could turn anyone on, very cringe-worthy.

I don't think the reason behind the crimes was fleshed out well. Neither was Nate's "recovery." I hardly think anyone would be up for sex of any kind...more

There’s a lot of pain behind the words in this book, behind the characters. It’s a strong, intense read.

In From the Cold is primarily about two men, Nathan Truman and Quinn Anders; who were childhood best friends, youthful, quasi-lovers, who have let time, denial and self destructive behaviours distance them.

Nathan left home after graduation and enlisted. Now he's the deputy sheriff in his home town, and the Sheriff, Theo, Quinn's father has been shot. Nathan is the typical small town, in denia...more

Ah, holy hell Mercy. I can't fucking believe you did this to me. I have GOT to start reading reviews before I throw myself heart and soul into something expecting a nice, angst-filled coming home romance. My (punched in the) gut tells me to give this 2 stars but my head and my heart are begging for 5. You sure know how to tear a girl apart.

So, in the beginning the story follows the blurb. Tragedy brings country music star Quinn Anders home to his small minded home town, where his first love Nath...more

Tension. This book is all about tension.

Quinn is a country singer who has hit the big time. Since leaving his Tennessee hometown, he has battled drug and alcohol addiction, hard times, family fights and an attraction to his best friend that broke that friendship.

Nathan is a deputy in the same small town he and Quinn are from. Twice divorced, former Marine Corp, from a wealthy family, Nate is happy enough. As long as he can keep ignoring Quinn.

When a crisis involving Quinn's father, the sheriff o...more

A short novel billed as a MM romance. This is a very readable page turning book. It's brevity meant I kept going to the end without getting bored. The gay sex was kind of exciting though not very realistic. I found Quinn's sexy talk a bit ridiculous ("baby") but not enough to spoil the book. I downloaded this booked after reading the authors novella "The 51st Thursday". Thursday was a near perfect piece of short erotic fiction; sexy and involving. In From The Cold didn't quite reach the same lev...more

Oh God, I loved Nathan. I really enjoyed this book but, so help me, if I have to read about another father being in ICU and dying I'm going to stop reading books (at least for a while). I read while on the treadmill (several hours a day) and I hate crying while I am on the treadmill and it's become a nasty habit with stories like this getting me where it hurts. Anyway, at least that scene didn't dwell for too long (lost my dad last June so it's still raw in my mind). This story revolves around N...more

This is a 3 because I couldn't stand (view spoiler)[the viciousness and gratuity of the rape (hide spoiler)]. I think that, in all candor, I might be influenced by the fact that this theme pops up too frequently in Mercy Celeste's writing. Perhaps if this was the only book of hers that I had read involving that particular theme, I wouldn't feel quite so uncomfortable about it. But it isn't, and I do. The book was actually pretty well-written, but I view the key crisis in the story in context wit...more

The story was going along nicely with Quinn and Nathan becoming reacquainted with each other and coming to grips with their love for each other and then nearing the end it went totally off the deep end brutal. I could have done without a few of the over-the-top disturbing things that happened to Nate.

I felt like this story really should have been longer. That it was edited down to fit a lesser page count. And the proofreader didn't do that good of a job. Quite a few typos and grammatical errors....more

Aww. Look at that cover! So peaceful and cuddly and sweet. One puffy kitten away from insufferable cuteness, right? But don’t let yourself be deceived so easily: this book is fucking terrifying!
I expected things to go wrong, but I couldn’t believe the author went that far. I thought you’re supposed to love your characters and not damage them beyond the point of no return. Well, not this author. This author is crazy! This author has no limits! The second half is brutal, sickening, horrifying, he...more

3.5 stars. Fair warning that there is a lot of brutality in this book. There is also a lot of disappointment and self-loathing and violence. It was sad to see how these men had wasted so much time in their lives either trying to forgot or trying to remember the past - and how they thought they were fooling everybody. Their reaction to seeing each other for the first time in over 5 years is visceral - you just know something big is going to happen. And it does.

I had to finish the book in one sit...more

This was so not what I was expecting from Mercy Celeste. All the other books of hers, that I’ve read, were nice angsty contemporary romances. Boy meets boy. Boy acts the fool. Boy forgives Boy. Boys live happily ever after.

In From the Cold was that and so much more. The suspense of this novel was pretty intense and there were several scenes, near the end, that were amazingly horrific. If lifetime ever gets a clue and starts making LGBT moves, this would make a great movie.

Beware...there is lots of angst. I always avoid knowingly reading angst filled stories....i hate being tied up in knots. I took the plunge on this one.....persevered and ended up enjoying it! The epilogue was great...a great HEA.

Looks like there will be sequels but I'm not sure I'll be able to take another foray into such angst from this author again. I just want them to stay happily~ever~after! I'm nervous about what she might do to Nathan or Quinn next. :)

Sweet book, great story premise but there was something missing. I had trouble following who was speaking when and found the writing very choppy. Also, I noticed as I was reading that every sentence sounded the same. There was no emotion in the writing. I think a major problem was punctuation. There were only periods! No exclamation marks to change the tone of what was being said. Very strange. Cute book, probably wouldn't reread.

Ok m/m romance about a sheriff's deputy and a country singer who were each others' firsts in high school, but who've taken different and equally self-destructive paths since then... and that doesn't end when tragedy brings the singer back to their hometown. This book had a lot of unrealized potential, which was unfortunately overshadowed by somewhat choppy writing and the absolutely worst case of pronoun confusion I've ever encountered.

I'm not sure if it was the writing or the editing but a lot of this story is untold.

The writing is not smooth. The pain behind the emotions/reactions seemed real. BUT, the reason for the pain was summed up or skipped over.

A lot went on in the 16 years since they graduated high school and I felt like too much of it was never brought up even though it was the reason behind who each of these men have become.

A newly-famous country singer sees his estranged first love--now a cop--for the first time in years over his father's deathbed. In the face of tragedy and new dangers, can these men find each other again?

You know how sometimes a book isn't, objectively speaking, really great writing, but it hits all the right buttons for you and you just have to read it again after finishing it? This book did that for me. I think Celeste may be one of those authors for me.

I couldn't decide between 2 stars and 3. In the end I gave it three just because there is HEA. Halfway through the book I wasn't sure I want to read the rest. I couldn't connect with neither character. Both were so annoying and their thoughts were all over the place. I honestly was glad I finished it. They both went through so many issues that each one would be good for one whole book and here they are both still alive at the end. Thank god. I didn't like them but Im glad for their happy end.

Hmmm, 3.5 on this one. A little too saccharine in parts (a few too many I love yous and other declarations) and I almost always hate murder mysteries in a romance.

The ending wrapped very nicely (almost unrealistically) but I have to admit, I did love the epilogue.

Still it's classic Mercy, as in HOT and it's an enjoyable, solid story.

Great until the last 10%. The way the aftermath of the pivotal scene was handled left me in disbelief. It didn't seem very realistic to me. Many times I was confused by the changing perspectives and all of the pronouns. I couldn't figure out who was doing what to whom or whose perspective we were in. Overall, I thought the majority of the book was fantastic, though, and I'm happy I took the time to read it.

So, I'm shamefully an avid reader of gay-fiction and found this one mildly more entertaining than any of the other plethera of novels that are out there. The ending was a bit much and some of it was too dramatic but not bad. Especially considering it was free...

Hmmm..... I should have loved this book. It had all of the right elements - strong plot line, enduring love, hurt/comfort. It seemed to be well-written, with some minor editorial issues and pronoun confusion.

For some reason I couldn't get into it. Maybe I have been desensitized to some of the parts that should have had a high emotional impact by my recent reads, but I felt that these areas were glossed over a bit. So..... I didn't care like I should have. I didn't get the heart-twisty feeling t...more

Wow, this one had a plot twist that left me gasping! Omg, I felt like crying for both Nate & Quinn during this time. Jeez Louise, was "not" expecting "that" to happen.
Just to be fair though, this should have come with a warning to sensitive readers.
Mercy...Show some, there needs to be a follow up story for these two!

I couldn't keep reading after about 12%. One MC was called home to see his dying father and the other MC constantly abused him. Who would do that to someone who's just been told his father's been shot?? And at the dying father's bedside no less. Not for me.

Really enjoyed this one!!! Would have been a 5 star but the dialogue in the sex scenes was just silly to me. I couldn't believe that Nate would talk that way. Otherwise loved it and can't wait for the next book.

The author did a great job with re-kindleing the couple's relationship after what happened to split them up in their youth. There wasn't any real flashbacks, but you easily knew what happened. There was a little more suspense to this book than I thought there would be. I really liked and understood Nate's character, but with Quinn I just couldn't picture him as a country singer. I did like his character, but I didn't see the country.

One thing about Mercy Celeste is that she can pack A LOT in a book and this one is no exception. EXCELLENT book! Highly recommended! I was intrigued from page 1 and it never let up.

I liked this story. The two characters together held my interest. The act of violence, even though it occurred 'off screen' was nonetheless terrifying in the repercussions.
