from my blog (11.8.11):

I’ve been carrying mark Stratton’s Tender Mercies (The Pancake Truck Press, 2011) around in my bag for a few months. Mark Stratton offers one of my favorite voices in contemporary poetry. You can pick him out in a bunch, and his work stands strongly. Tender Mercies is a fantastic collection that will have your iBrain returning again and again. Mark's poetry is tender and insightful, modern with classical allusions. I love how the lines dance together and how each page is a glimpse into a day, a scene we have all experienced, but few can render as gracefully as Mark.

"Gradual decline is seldom apparent in the moment."

"Sometimes, I believe I am drowning on a clear blue day with an amber sky of hope or delinquent taxes coming home to roost."

Just a couple of my faves. WONDERFUL collection! One I will read over and over again!

Amazing. I loved it. Simple yet complex, layered and thoughtful. Like a fine glass of wine.
