I've read Roald Dahl's books probably about 5 times each. They are primarily for kids, but I even picked them up and read them again just this last summer. You should experience him at least once in your lifetime. They all have a twist in the end and are brilliantly original and creative.

An unique story from Roald Dahl. 'tortoise'... that written from back and become the title Esio Trot really captured my imagination and attention from many Roald Dahl' books. Really amazed with the story indeed.

I didn't know what this one was about when I grabbed it. I thought maybe "Esio Trot" was the name of a foreign little boy. Turns out it's "tortoise" spelled backwards.
This one's kinda dumb. It was published the year Roald Dahl died, and I think he'd lost his edge by then. I'll give it three stars, though, because I would have liked it when I was at the appropriate age.
My kid self would have liked this book because we used to have turtles as pets. Not torto More...

At first I thought "Awww...pretty cute story!" And then Reality-Sara bitchslapped mushy All-Books-Are-Super!-Sara because this story breaks all former immorality and suckosity records in the entire world history of written word.

Esio Trot is the story of an old man and his secret love for the neighbour in the flat below. The man, Mr Hoppy, is too shy to tell the lady in question, Mrs Silver, how he truly feels, but when she tells him of her worries about the slow growth of her beloved pet tortoise, Mr Hoppy promises her he can make her tortoise grow. Mr Happy buys one hundred and forty tortoises and, by repeatedly switching them round, tricks Mrs Silver into believing her pet is growing. Mrs Silver is so delighted she a

Esio Trot is a charming short story about an older gentleman and how he goes about to win the heart of his neighbour who he is very much in love with.
Mr. Hoppy is in love with Mrs. Silver and he spends much of his time leaning over his balcony to talk with her while she tends to her flowers and her beloved pet tortoise Alfie. Mrs Silver gives all her attention to Alfie and Mr. Hoppy soon devise’s a cunning plan to win Mrs Silver’s attention and heart and plays on her concern of Alfie’s slow More...

Short little book took about 15 mins to read thru.
Mr. Hoppy is in love with his neighbour Mrs Silver who is shown as a buxom women in the illustrations giving Hoppy something to lear at which he does.
She wants her tortoise to grow bigger, big is everything to her, and seeing his opportunity he tricks her into thinking her tortoise is growing faster by using a secret code.

I personally enjoyed reading this book because I immediately wanted to know what was going to happen after reading the first page.
The story entails the life of Mr Hoppy, an old man who has two loves in life, his flowers and his neighbour Mrs Silver who lives directly underneath him. However, she has a different love of her own, Alfie, her pet tortoise. Mr Hoppy would do anything to please Mrs Silver and one can see from the opening pages that he is quite jealous of Alife.

For years, Mr. Hoppy has leaned over his balcony rail to gaze longingly at Mrs. Silver, who lives one floor below him. But all of her attention and affection is showered upon her pet tortoise, Alfie. Although the creature seems content, his devoted owner is concerned because he has gained a mere three ounces in the 11 years she has owned him.

A quick read - I'm revisting my old Roald Dahl books to see if I still like them.
To be honest, I was a bit shocked by the way Roald portrayed women in this book. They were stupid, ignorant, and easily fooled by a crafty old man. Additionally, animals seemed to be more of objects than living creatures.
Not really the best story for children.
Loved the illustrations though!

Mr.Hoppy is a lonely,middle-aged man. And he’s in love with the attractive Mrs.Silver, a widow who lives in the apartment below him. Being painfully shy, he never musters up the courage to proclaim his devotion. Mrs.Silver, oblivious to the angst in the balcony above, is too busy showering affection on her titch of a tortoise, Alfie. While the two neighbours exchange pleasantries, Mrs.Silver reveals that her greatest sorrow is that Alfie never grows...not a bit. The excitable Hoppy sees this is

My sister used to read this book to me. So I put it on also for the memories it created. This is another not as well known classic of Rauld Dauls. It is about two older people who are apartment neighbors. The one is trying to make the other like him through the use of a turtle... well many many turtles. It is a fun read.

Mr Hoppy is an extremely shy old man who lives alone in his apartment. For years he has been secretly in love with his neighbour Mrs Silver. Mrs Silver, however, is head over heels in love with Alfie - her pet Tortoise. Mr Hoppy often leans over his balcony and talks to Mrs Silver but is far too shy to profess his true feelings. One day when Mr Hoppy and Mrs Silver were talking Mrs Silver told Mr Hoppy how she so wished that Alfie would grow a little faster.

Some reviews for this book bring up interesting issues (women are dumb, animals are objects), but it just goes to show that people read the same things differently.
When I was done with this I felt the bigger point was that Mr. Hoppy went through so much trouble to impress Miss Silver with his magical turtle whispering and then, when he finally declares his love, she asks what kept him so long. I thought that was the message (Keep It Simple, Stupid), not that being a liar and a callou More...

This story of Roald Dahl's is also quite interesting. It is an unbelievable story about trying to make a turtle grow. I would think that children would find the nonsense words in this story interesting, especially the title. Mr. Hoppy tries all these interesting ways to get Mrs. Silver's turtle to grow. He plays a trick on her and she never realizes the difference. It seems like such a ridiculous tale, but it in the end she falls in love More...

Beautiful story. Probably my favourite Dahl book. Maybe. He was such a great writer. Maybe I can't discern since they're all different. Well, I still love this book. Pick it up and fall in love.

An old man tricks the love of his life into falling for him by convincing her that he knows a magic spell which will make her tortoise grow faster. While she whispers the spell into the tortoise's ear every night, he simply switches the tortoise out for a slightly bigger one once a week for four months. They get married, and she never finds out about the deception.

I usually really enjoy anything by Roald Dahl, and although this book kept my interest, I found it to be very disturbing. Mr. Hoppy is a creepy weirdo who comes out on top in the end!
I am giving this three stars because my son liked it, but I did talk to him about the ending and how what Mr. Hoppy did to Mrs. Silver and Alfie was not very nice. I suppose it is a useful book in that it really gives you something to talk about with your child when you are finished with it, in terms of More...
