This is a debut-novel haunting tale of sisters Ruthie and Lucille as they try to cope with their family history of death and strangeness in Fingerbone, a small town somewhere in the Far West. (Robinson is from Idaho, so it may be inspired by a town there.) Fingerbone is home to a mysterious lake traversed twice daily by a train crossing a treacherous trestle. Actually, I read the novel, not the study guide. I did enjoy the book - the writing is wonderful - but the story is dark and so much of it is not what it appears to be. Sometimes the symbolism gets a little heavy handed. Robinson has quite an imagination, and I always feel like her books have the elements of great stories ... but they usually fall a little short for me. I'd recommend this book, but not with great enthusiasm.
