It was brought to my attention recently that each of these books in the series represent one of the seven Deadly Sins. Obviously, this book is about Greed. Everyone gets hooked in Demon’s Breath, the epic and highly dangerous drug of the Netherworld, and once again it is up to Kaylee to save a whole bunch of people that don’t give a damn about her. She also struggles with the fact that her boyfriend is a douche. I am Nash, I want sex, I want drugs, blah blah blah, me me me.

When the first two books of this series originally came out I read them right away, though for some weird reason, I never got around to reading this book until a few days ago, but I had read many reviews of it and basically knew the majority of the plot line. I think that had I not known what was going to occur in this book before reading it, I wouldn't have picked up on all of the un-Nash-like behaviour to the extent that I did and had I not known what was going to occ...more ***May contain spoilers***

When the first two books of this series originally came out I read them right away, though for some weird reason, I never got around to reading this book until a few days ago, but I had read many reviews of it and basically knew the majority of the plot line. I think that had I not known what was going to occur in this book before reading it, I wouldn't have picked up on all of the un-Nash-like behaviour to the extent that I did and had I not known what was going to occur beforehand, I don't think I would have put together all of the subtle clues/ guessed how this book was going to turn out. I think that knowing what was going to happen allowed me to accept, "Yes, this is going to happen and it is something that I just have to get used to", whereas had I now known, it would have come as such a surprise to me and I think that I would have had a very difficult time accepting how it unfolded...That being said, this is hands down the best book in this series...

As I have said, I am not a Nash fan and it may sound kind of heartless, but I did like seeing him being knocked down a few notches in this book. I felt like seeing a more vulnerable side of him made him seem more human (Er human? Right, he isn't human. Ummm... More nice bean sidhe who I can relate to and actually tolerate?). And surprise, surprise! I actually found myself experiencing other emotions besides hate and loathing towards him, I found myself sympathizing and feeling bad for him in certain instances, for instance in the case that he wasn't the route cause of the addiction. In "My Soul to Save" he was totally against helping Addy and Tod and only went along with the crazy plan because of Kaylee, and for that, the initial addiction was not his fault. What was his fault was how he dealt with the knowledge that he was addicted afterwards and I don't feel any sympathy for him in that regard whatsoever (those darn hating and loathing feelings emerge once again). He was the one who went to the Netherworld in order to get a fix, he was the one who gave up his memories of Kaylee, knowing that it would break her heart, and he was the one who allowed those he cared about to be possessed, all the while knowing that his mom is the master of Netherworld cures who could helped him overcome his addiction right from the start.

Though Tod was more so at fault for the death of Doug and the downfall of Scott, than any other character besides Avari, I didn't find myself feeling any animosity towards him. In Nash's actions he was only thinking about himself, in Tod's actions he was thinking about Addy, and how he could lessen her pain and suffering in the Netherworld and that was something that I can respect and accept. I thought that it was also really nice to see Emma grow as a character in this book- I now find her to be much more than the blond friend who she was in the beginning of the series, the friend who was pretty oblivious to everything that was happening around her, only being concerned with what clothes she could steal from her older sisters. Also, I found myself feeling extreme sympathy/ pity for Sophie (even though she would probably hate my pity and bitch me out for it). That poor girl has just had a hard time, she really needs a break. First she loses a member of her dance team, then she dies, but comes back because her mom dies, she knows that her dad, uncle and cousin are keeping something from her, her boyfriend becomes an addict, is a huge jerk, and eventually ends up in a mental ward. So yeah, she deserves a shopping spree or something along those lines in the next book to make her feel better...

As for Kaylee? Well props to her for not just accepting the fact that her boyfriend is a complete user- both in using drugs and in using her and their memories together to further his own ends, and props to her for not forgiving him right away like some girls may have (just for the fact that he is Nash Hudson and he is such a catch! UGH!). I think that this experience even though it was quite horrific, will only strengthen Kaylee, making her an even more kick-ass female character.

Ok so after reading this book I am completely in love with Tod his character becomes much more human in it. I cried through the last chapter but it did leave me a bit confused. I will not post spoilers for the people who haven't read it yet. All I can say is WOW and I can't wait for the next book :)

Wow, what a ride My Soul to Keep was. After reading My Soul to Save I was a little bit disappointed that is wasn't as good book one but Rachel Vincent is definitely back.

In this instalment we see Kaylee go through a whole new challenge. When her friends at school get a hold of the deadly Demon's Breath, they soon start becoming addicts and of course Kaylee takes it upon herself to try and sort out the problem. With the help of Nash and Tod, Kaylee battles through the Neverworld yet again but whe...more Wow, what a ride My Soul to Keep was. In this instalment we see Kaylee go through a whole new challenge. When her friends at school get a hold of the deadly Demon's Breath, they soon start becoming addicts and of course Kaylee takes it upon herself to try and sort out the problem. With the help of Nash and Tod, Kaylee battles through the Neverworld yet again but when she finds out the person closet to her is also an addict.....Kaylee's world is turned upside down and now it becomes a battle to save the one she loves most.

My Soul to Keep was a perfect example of why I enjoy Rachel Vincent’s work. It was thrilling, dangerous and FULL of emotions and I loved every minute it. It's safe to say I definitely felt more connected with this novel than book two. I feel the reason for this is because this time around, the danger is surrounding Kaylee’s close friends and loved ones rather than someone we didn't really know and I loved it all the more.

Kaylee this time around, I felt grew as a character and she truly stands up for what she believes in. It is sad to say that this time, her journey is a sad one because she is trying to save Nash who is addicted to Demon's Breath and that opens up a can of worms for their relationship. Kaylee feels betrayed because Nash doesn't confide in her about his problem and there are things that she just can't get over, so they do break up. I can totally understand why she feels like this but I couldn't help feel sorry for Nash. It's not his fault he was exposed to Demon's Breath, it was just his fault he hid it and lied about it. My heart honestly broke for him, I love Nash...honestly love him and I seriously hope he gets back to his normal self and him and Kaylee work on their problems.

Despite all the sadness in this book, it was good to see Tod interact more with Kaylee. I've already heard of a potential storyline that might happen between them and I'm not sure how I feel about it at the moment but for now, I did enjoy getting to know him better and I loved how he supported Kaylee. I can't wait to see what happens next.

In My Soul to Save, Vincent introduced readers to Demon's Breath, a sought-after intoxicant among the denizens of the Netherworld. Kaylee now emerges from her month-long grounding to find that someone has brought Demon's Breath to her high school and that several of her acquaintances are using it. And for human kids, using Demon's Breath is a nearly inevitable ticket to insanity or death. Then, Vincent makes terrific use of a tiny, forgettable detail from book two and puts Kaylee through a wrenching betrayal. Now she has to deal with the repercussions of that betrayal while thwarting a hellion's sinister designs.

The human (and bean sidhe) characters have believable shades of gray that inspire compassion even when their behavior is reprehensible. For example, one Demon's Breath user became addicted by accident; that initial event was not his fault at all. Yet he is still morally culpable for what he did after that to feed the addiction. As for the hellion, he's horrifying; My Soul to Keep features so many chilling ways a hellion can destroy lives and relationships.

Kaylee shows admirable strength at the novel's end; I'm reminded of Albus Dumbledore's words about the courage it takes to stand up to one's friends. I am so tired of wilting heroines and it's so gratifying to see one who calls people on their bad behavior and stands up for her own needs.

This ending leaves the Soul Screamers series in an uncertain place -- but at the same time it's blown wide open, with so many interesting directions Vincent could take it. I had been slightly disappointed in My Soul to Save and unsure whether to continue -- but after My Soul to Keep, I'm eagerly along for the ride. (less)

Auch im dritten Teil der “Soul Screamers”-Reihe ist Kaylee und ihren Freunden keine Ruhe vergönnt. Selbst im Schlaf findet Kaylee keine Ruhe mehr, denn sie wechselt versehentlich in die Netherworld. Wird sie trotz akuten Schlafmangels die Quelle der Droge finden und so verhindern können, dass sie ihre tödliche Wirkung entfalten kann? Die Zeit drängt, denn die Schäden von Demon’s Breath sind irreparabel und der Stoff für Menschen extrem tödlich. Sie ahnt nicht, wie weite Kreise die Droge schon gezogen hat …

Meinung

Im zweiten Teil gab es so eine Stelle, wo ich dachte: “Das wird bestimmt noch Folgen haben …” – tja, hier sind sie! Rachel Vincent entwickelt ihre Geschichte um die “Soul Screamers” konsequent und logisch weiter: Auch wenn ich es wie Kaylee nicht wahrhaben wollte, hat mich der Handlungsverlauf nicht wirklich überrascht. Die Geschichte ist im Vergleich zu ihren Vorgängern wesentlich schwerer und trauriger.

Die Charaktere zeigen sich hier allesamt nicht von ihrer besten Seite, auch wenn es verständlich ist, wie sie sich verhalten. Und damit kommen wir zum größten Kritikpunkt: Ich mochte einfach nicht, wie sich eine Figur in der Geschichte entwickelte, auch wenn es nur folgerichtig war. Letztlich ist das aber ein Pluspunkt für die Autorin, denn das zeigt, dass mir ihre Charaktere nicht egal sind. Schön fand ich es, dass eine Figur aus Teil 2 wieder auftaucht.

Das Ende wirkte mir ein bisschen überdramatisch aufgepfropft, damit es einen richtigen Showdown gibt. Es passte aus meiner Sicht nicht so richtig zum Rest der Geschichte. Hier wäre vielleicht weniger mehr gewesen, denn das Vorangegangene hatte genug Potenzial, um für sich allein zu wirken. Insgesamt bleibt zu sagen: Es war spannend, es gibt wieder neue Details und ich will die nächsten Teile auf jeden Fall lesen – aber gemocht habe ich diesen Teil der Reihe nicht.

Fazit

Spannender dritter Teil der “Soul Screamers”, aber wesentlich düsterer als die Vorgänger.

I think this was the most disappointing book so far in the series. Tod is rapidly becoming my favorite character but there was so little of him in this book. Once he came back into play, I wanted to keep reading simply because he was involved. Am I the only one thinking Tod acts like he cares about Addy and Kaylee, but not about his own brother? He didn't even flinch when he found out that Nash is on drugs and that Avari kidnapped him. He's scared for what Avari is doing to Addy, but he doesn't care what the hellion does to Nash.

But as I kept reading I was like: So this is not just another episode and it really is about Avari being greedy. He is intent on getting revenge on Kaylee because she interfered with saving Addison’s soul. Love it!

The Story: The football players at school have found a new way to get high – by breathing in demon’s breath. After a few hits humans will be permanently affected. Kaylee is determined to find the dealer. She also has been having nightmares and premonitions and ends up slipping into the Netherworld while she sleeps. Yes, all kinds of bad stuff going on!

Kaylee: I love to see how characters change with each installment in a series. Well, here we had Kaylee being Kaylee. She was still trying to save everyone, which is plain out foolish. She should know by now that it is impossible and she should also know to never interfere with death.

Nash: Tsk tsk, Nash. He has been using his Influence, but I was left wondering exactly how long and how much he had been doing it to Kaylee. And woa! Nash messed up big time in this book….I was shocked!!

The Romance: Kaylee put the brakes on the physical aspect of the romance since she still had doubts that Nash was really a long term thing. They also hit a massive hurtle in their relationship (eek). It was great to see them grow and I hope to see them work through all the issues. I’m a huge cheerleader for Team Nash & Kaylee!

Tod: I have to make a section about Tod in this review because I am really loving him. He definitely has more going on than he lets on and is turning into a major character. He also really loved Addy *tears*. I can’t wait to see more of him!

Twists and Turns: I can’t say much but I did not expect THAT coming at all.

The Ending: Well, the tissue factor is high!! I can’t spoil but there is some pleading and some goodbyes. I was so very sad :( . But what happened was pretty unforgivable too.

Final Thoughts: This was definitely not the last we’re seeing of Avari. I think Kaylee will get involved until Avari ceases to exist. I’m also pretty upsest about the ending which has to do with the twist I mentioned above. This installment definitely “upped” the excitement level.

Rec it? YES! It was a nail biter for some reasons and a great and quick read. This book added so much depth to the series, exactly what I was looking for.(less)

Well if you're a fan of this series, you won't be disappointed by this book. This time, we have fighting the bad guys, romance and some betrayal thrown in for color. I couldn't put it down.

The characters just continue to grow up, literally. And they view things as high-schoolers would. Their behavior is appropriate for their age, which is to say that sometimes they're really mature and sometimes they're really childish.

Kaylee's Banshee, or Bean Sidhe ability caused her to scream whenever she sensed death. only Nash, her boyfriend was able to understand and calm her under these extreme circumstances. There are very few authors that can make later books in a series as exciting as the first, and even less who can make the books better. Rachel Vincent is one of those authors. When I first read this book, I was surprised by the supernatural take on drugs - in my experience, it's not something that many authors incorporate in their stories. Even my third time through, I had a hard time putting this book down.

This book was exhausting, and there were few light and happy moments like we saw in the first 2 books. In the previous books, even when things were going to hell in a handbasket for Kaylee and co, there were some great moments (almost all involving Tod). Tod interrupting Kaylee and Nash's makeout sessions, Tod's wonderfully snarky and sarcastic humour and the joy he found in annoying Nash by making himself invisible/inaudible to him whenever he is around Kaylee. So don't look for any light at the end of the tunnel, silver lining type moments in this book. There aren't any. People die, hearts get broken, people make really stupid decisions, and evil claims a few victories. But that isn't to say it wasn't a good read.

As usual, Vincent presents us with some great characters. You already know how I feel about Nash, the bastard. And Kaylee, the fiercely loyal, lovable, trusting but extremely strong heroine. Emma wasn't as annoying a damsel in distress as I had first thought, but I didn't see her attraction to strung-out, not-too-proud-to-sexually-assault-drunk-girls Doug Fuller. Ah, and then there's Tod.

I'll admit, I was really disappointed that there wasn't more of Tod in this book. He was infuriatingly absent for the month following Addy's death, and this was annoying - after almost letting Kaylee die in the Netherworld and dragging his brother and her into THAT whole ordeal, he just takes off? He isn't there for Kaylee, and doesn't see what Nash has become, until almost 3/4 of the way into the book. Turns out he was doing some sickeningly sweet, altruistic stuff in his spare time, but still; he could have been more present in Kaylee and Nash's lives.

In the end tho, Tod came through and proved that is in fact a worthy love interest for me. If only he wasn't so in love with Addy. His love of her is truly inspiring and everything he does for her (and for Kaylee when it comes to Nash), makes him an unlikely hero in this book. I'm tempted to say that what he did was too little, too late (like it was for Nash) but once Kaylee asked for his help he was absolutely there for her.

Onto the new character in the series - Alec. Hmm. What is he, and what is he going to do now that he has been returned to his earthly existence? He is obviously not full human, whether he knows it or not, and he owes Kaylee his life. Where will he fit into the story?

And moreover, what next for everyone? Nash and Kaylee? Tod and Kaylee? Emma? Alec. Hmmm.(less)

Well, this book was full of surprises, which is good, giving that if you know what is going to happen, a book becomes boring and it's not worth reading anymore.
Like I said before, I didn't quite know what to think about Nash. He seemed to be a player with some hidden agenda and I wasn't enjoying what I saw. --'

So out of the 3 Soul screamers I've read so far ( & the novella) this one is probebly my least favorite.

I just hate Nash. I really do. T E A M T O D over here .

Nash is just annoying- not really a jerk (until you finish reading My soul to keep , THEN you realize he's a jerk), but just annoying. I never trusted the kid, & this proves that true.

I'm still enjoying this series, but this book unfortunately included one of my pet peeves in plotting. I really despise conflict that's created by people simply NOT TELLING EACH OTHER THINGS. Why for the love all that's holy won't Kaylee just explain to (view spoiler) what's going on? We get some very weak justifications for this sprinkled throughout the novel, but personally I find them all to be completely B.S. We get some very weak justifications for this sprinkled throughout the novel, but personally I find them all to be completely B.S. I think the real reason (view spoiler) isn't being told is that it creates conflict and suspense by making Kaylee run around in circles trying to "protect" her. Look, this behavior is only marginally more acceptable coming from a female towards a female than it is coming from annoying male characters who always want to protect the sweet vulnerable innocence of their lady. CUT IT OUT. You are never benefiting a woman by keeping knowledge from her that you have personally decided is "too much" for her to handle. That's obnoxiously condescending and not your decision to make.

I find this strange and hypocritical to be coming from Kaylee here, after it was made such a big deal in the first book that keeping the truth of the supernatural world from her when she was personally connected to it was actually putting her in danger. She actually delivered a great speech about it to her father, calling him out for keeping information from her which actually just made her less prepared and less safe.

Kaylee is normally such a moral center of the series that these kinds of oversights are very glaring...

Apart from that, we get some more decent foreshadowing about Tod having some romantical potential feeeeeelings for Kaylee. And what's going with Nash is built up pretty well, going from subtle to overt off-ness. All of the clues are blatant enough for any reader to pick up and it all comes together well.

Vincent continues to make some interesting, dark choices with the consequences to her characters' actions and that's one of the things that consistently makes this series worth reading. When Kaylee, Nash, and Tod make mistakes, people pay for them. It adds real weight to the events in each book.

Shelves: better-than-i-thought, did-not-see-that-coming, cringe, don-t-break-my-heart, terrified-to-read

Reading this book is a lot like walking into a housefire. It hurts and you can see and feel everything crashing and burning around you. But you must keep going. Why? Because you need to save the cat that's in the kitchen. (My metaphor for finishing the book). You want to turn around and get out many times, practically from the moment you entered the burning building, but you can hear the cat mewling and you need to try and save it.

I kinda wanted to hit Kaylee at the same time as I wanted to hug her at the end of this and I just wanted to hit Tod period! I felt really bad for Nash and thought Kaylee shouldn't have been so harsh on him at the end. I understand having some trust issues but I don't think she should have put them on hiatus, espeacially as (whether it was intentional or not) she was responsible for his addiction.

I can understand how it got so out of hand for him as he had no one he could turn to for help as in his eyes his brother hates him and wants only to hurt him at every turn (Tod's fault for how he treats him and encourages this believe by torturing Nash), Kaylee's Dad and uncle would have turned against him for it and used it against him, Kaylee was sick and recovering from almost dying so he felt he couldn't bother her with it, plus she may trust him on a professional level but she hasn't actually truly displayed any real personal trust in him, not to mention she's too caught up with judging his choice of friends and refusing to be a full part of his life by hanging out with him WITH his friends (instead making him choose between hanging with her or them) to notice that he was in trouble and fighting an addiction, nor could he burden his mother and no one else knows about Bean sidhes and the netherworld so he was isolated and fighting a serious addiction that grabs you soul deep. I thought Tod had no right to turn on him and hit him at the end considering what he did in the last book and I just hope Kaylee forgives Nash soon and takes him back before she loses him because I believe he genuinely loves her but she doesn't do much to show she cares for him day to day, she can't even tell him she loves him but she dumps him because she says he doesn't love her enough to fight the addiction for her and tell it no? He was trying to fight it but he was also hurting alot which made it hard for him to fight it, espeacially alone with no support. I look forward to the next book in October to see if they sort things out between them and if Tod will ever stop being such an ass to his little brother and let Nash know that he does care about him, maybe rebuild the relationship they had before Tod died and became a reaper.

Review:
This is one of the saddest books I've read in ages. The third installment of Vincent's Soul Screamers series is certainly not to be missed.

Kaylee is fantastic, she shows her true colours and doesn't back down from making the hardest decisions she had to make. Even when it comes to Nash.

Early on in the book we began to see changes in their love life, and a few little new quirks of Nash's that were just annoying, and a little upsetting. How he tries to manipulate Kaylee, how he's a little more forceful with her, he questions her more than ever, and puts her down emotionally. But she still stands by his side because she knows that underneath all of that, they need each other because of their Banshee heritage.

The new drug on the street is the shocking Demon's Breath that Kaylee and Nash encountered in the second book, and its starting to reach the kids from school so Kaylee and Nash start to find out who the supplier is and figure out how to cut off the supply, for good.

The side characters all play a major part in this one. Emma is brilliant and Tod comes into his own. But Kaylee and Nash have an enormous problem and by the end Kaylee knows underneath that her small mishap when they were in the Netherworld (in Book 2)is the reason why everything is falling apart.

I literally couldn't put this one down, and a tide of different emotions swept through me as I read this, and the end is so sad (sorry for the spoiler!)

I'm giving this one 5 stars because the story is epic, and the message is brave, intelligent and heart-warming.

First of all, I have to applaud Vincent for attempting to tackle as difficult a topic as addiction. What I have admired about this series most thus far is that she manages to address real problems common to many teenagers, but does so through fantasy elements. From parents and school, to the will-they-or-won't-they aspect of Nash and Kaylee's physical relationship, these character read like real teenagers. In this particular book the addiction is used to illuminate many of the character's flaws, fears, and inner demons. There was a great deal of character development and many emotional moments.

Vincent continues to build the paranormal aspects of her world, hinting at more interesting facets and possible future plot threads all the time. While this takes a back seat in many cases to the internal struggles, it's still fairly well done and worth noting.

Kaylee is left on he own or with very limited help many times throughout this book, and in many cases that seemed needless. I questioned many times why she did not find someone stronger or more knowledgeable than herself to help. I'm continuously bothered by the apparent lack of competent adult policing/fighting forces in this little supernatural world. One would assume that if there are a decent number of banshees and other creatures, there should be some kind of leader, or a warrior class, anyone at all that could step in when someone evil threatens multiple lives. Or it could all be left up to a teenage girl...that seems fine too.

My other major complaint is the utter lack of resolution in the ending. BIG SPOILER ALERT:

One of two things needed to happen in this ending: either Kaylee needed to leave Nash for good because of all of the crap he did to her, or she needed to forgive him and try to start over. She half-asses it instead, saying she wants him to get better so she can have him back. In a long established relationship, that would make sense: I would be able to believe that she loved him and that their relationship could sustain temporary separation for the purpose of mental healing. However, their relationship is fairly new--three months I believe. Realistically, even if they felt in love, taking a break at this point would mean the end because the relationship is not established enough to survive it. So yes, I hated the ending and I felt it was a massive cop out on the authors part.

These complaints aside, this was a good book overall. It had a lot of depth and emotion without needless angst. 4 stars. (less)

Odd that I start this series with number three, but I didn't know that when I picked it up. It was surprisingly easy to fall into the story and read the characters, even if I was a little confused at times due to references to previous books.

The writing flows well, and the world created is interesting and unique. Thankfully, Nash isn't perfect, which adds a whole new dimension to this story and takes away the usual Perfect hunk found in so many YA series out there.

Vincent proposes a lot of questions about the culpability of someone under the influence and the effects drugs can have on those around you.

Furthermore...

I love Tod! HE IS AWESOME! <3 But he's a very puzzling character to wrap my head around. On one hand, he is still a lovesick little kid with a heart of gold, revealing a merciful side to his cold, reaper heart whenever he is around Addy. But on the other hand, he has these moments where he also might like Kaylee yet not enough for Vincent to ship for a love triangle (yet).

And also, I've always thought this (while not necessarily saying it aloud in my reviews): Nash sucks. Well he doesn't actually suck. But he's always been a bit controlling and alpha-male-ish. I thought it was cute at first--he was just a big, lovable protector introducing Kaylee to her heritage. But in this book (for obvious reasons), he is just frustrating. At first, I wondered if Vincent had completely forgotten about Nash we'd gotten to know in the first two books. But the brilliant thing was that his actions were written that way for a reason (which I won't reveal because of spoilers)! It's hard to explain, but after finishing the book, I wouldn't have had Nash portrayed any other way.

Anyway, now that my knee jerk reaction is done, I just want to say that the series has gotten progressively better. I thought this book was a perfect balance of action, mystery, and scenes that just don't happen in average YA paranormal fiction. YAY! And I don't even know if this book really deserves 5 stars, but right now, the series is satisfying all my literary needs.

I've enjoyed this series from the beginning, even though I'm typically not a big fan of teen paranormal romance novels a la Twilight. Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series has always managed to give me a compelling, enjoyable ride with great characters and a fun story. I wouldn't say that it's amazing literature, but it's a simple, easy read that's worth getting into.

Wow! I didn't know that the series would just keep getting better and better. I was surprised by the supernatural take on addiction to drugs. Who would have thought to use Demon's Breath as a drug to get high?
