Dear Aspiring Author,
if you finish writing a book and read it over again a couple times (some punk decided to call that stage editing - crazy stuff) and you notice that it screams lion and lamb at you, something has gone wrong.
Because, even if Twilight is crazy popular and earned a lot of money, it's still crap, technique-wise. And, call me idealistic, I feel like quality should be what any writer should strive for in writing.

I found this book for free on Amazon and checked out some of the reviews here. Because, let's face it: even if it's free, I don't want to waste my time. And then, holy crap, so many five star reviews. I checked the top 10 reviews or so and they were all four or five stars.
How did that happen?
Sometimes with indie authors I'm sure some publishers cry at night for refusing to contract the author. Sometimes, like in this case, I get why they did.

I can't say much about the story, because I skipped through a lot of it. What I can say, is this:

1. The dialogs were SO stilted. It sounded like the characters wrote everything down first and then said it aloud. Nobody talks like that. That issue is the reason why I just couldn't bring myself to do more than skipping. I can ignore purple prose, I get over flat characters, but I absolutely hate dialogs that feel unnatural.

2. The love story was unrealistic at best. Claudia and Michael fall in love with each other and say a lot of clichéd stuff to each other. So clichéd that even I (and I love mushy moments) couldn't help but stare and cringe at the pages. Their attraction to each other is purely based on appearances. They don't know anything about each other's personalities. That's not love, it's lust. Lust is fine with me, just don't try to write it of as the love of the century.

I wish I could say more about the plot, but for that someone would have to give me a summary without all the yadda yadda in-between. (I did laugh about the name Halo City. Again, cliché.)
As it is, sadly a waste of time after all.(less)

I cannot express how refreshing it is to find something in the paranormal romance genre that is not about vampires, werewolves, or zombies. NOT saying there is anything wrong with vampires and such (I like those books too), I'm just saying that it is nice to read something different. Crossroads is a book that I think is the ultimate Young Adult book. It is a book I would have my own 16 year old read. It offers great romance and faith based living. It follows a young girl raised by a single mom and a caring Gamma(a name my kids also used)who comes of age in the most remarkable way.

Wow! This book is totally left open for much, much more, which is exciting because I love books in a series! I can't wait to see Claudia open up and blossom into the full being she can be! Let me first start off with my difficulty. This is my first romance novel, and I would stay away from romance novels and movies of such, unless my date promises to watch a horror movie with me, and let me drink the entire night until I get smashed, and yet she has to kiss me. Even at that, I would still think twice about going to a romantic movie.

I liked the way Mary developed her characters and created their character chemistry. I enjoyed getting to know Claudia, the story's protagonist and Michael, her love interest. Claudia is a laid back, down to earth, likable character. When she first meets Michael it wasn't hard to not like him, but there was obviously a good reason why he treated her so coldly. Over the course of a series of events Michael quickly becomes another fictional character readers will enjoy getting to know. He's romantic, sexy, at times a little funny, and is very protective of the love of his existence, and for a good reason too.

Along with Michael and Claudia is a cast of fabulous characters I also enjoyed getting to know. Though some of their roles are minor, they all played a role in bringing Crossroads to life. Two of my favorite supporting characters are Michael's friends Davin and Claudia's Grandmother, Gamma. Michael and Devin have a great, strong, close friendship, where Claudia and Gamma's relationship is one that tugged at my heart strings. For anyone who's ever had a close relationship with their Grandmother will really enjoy the relationship between the two, and the inspiration behind Mary writing this story. The character that surprised me the most is Austin. I already have my suspicions about him, and I am really anxious to find out how big of a role he'll be playing in Gamma's life as the series progresses.

There are a lot of elements I enjoyed about the story. The setting is very vivid, the lore with angels, demons, guardian angels, and Mary's unique angel mythology was very refreshing. I liked the way she wrote and created her good vs battle and the role Claudia plays in it. There's some great character twists within the story that I didn't even see coming. With everything I liked about the book, there were some very minor things that bothered me with the writing. Like how many times Claudia mentions how hot Michael is, or how forgetful Claudia is after each time she experiences some bigger events in the story. As the story went on I felt these things were a little bit redundant, but they didn't take away from me enjoying the book and I think these are things that will be polished up a bit before Crossroads is released next month by a publishing house.

Crossroads is an enticing read with it's beautifully descriptive world, and in-depth characters. It's story of self discovery, love, loss, and friendship. If you're a fan of angel lore, romance and paranormal reads I'd recommend picking it up. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in this series. (less)

Really enjoyed this book! It was a very quick read and definitely left you wanting more. I was very pleased that there was going to be a sequel.

Although there are some similarities for our favored Twilight influences, I loved the forbidden love for a human and an angel. It explores an area that we don't often think about and brings up great discussion, even on the topic of are there angels and what is their role in our life.

I love this book! Mary writes beautifully yet simply, creating a story full of forbidden love, lots of action, twists and turns, self discovery and loss and longing. Even with all the twists and turns the story is easy to follow and moved at a perfect pace. I could not put down the book and once things got started I sped through it, but at the same time never wanted it to end.

Claudia is a protagonist that is very likable and Michael her love interest seriously gives Edward Cullen a run for his money. I told Mary Ting that girls everywhere will be adding Michael to their fictional boyfriend list for sure! He’s sweet, romantic, sexy, and loves Claudia more than anything and will protect her at any cost. Seriously girls... you will want Michael to wrap YOU in those wings of his!

The relationship between Claudia and her Gamma is one that touched my heart and even put me in tears a couple times. It is obvious that Mary herself had a very special relationship with her Grandmother since her novel was written in honor of her. The other supporting characters are all endearing and I loved the antics between all of them. I can’t wait for more of them in book two and to also find out more about Austin whom I suspect may take on a bigger role. I can’t wait! I need more now! Hurry up and write faster Mary!!!! I just finished the book! It took me a while to finish it because I was really busy lately but I really loved it!

I adored this book and was so sad when I finished it. I didn't want it to end. I feel like these people are my friends and I want to continue on their journey with them. Crossroads is a great, romantic YA read. I tend to shy away from YA trends, so I'd never read any of the angel books that came out. But Ting manages to intertwine so many elements that I forgot all about my hesitance.
The protagonist's journey is full of twists and turns, some of them quite surprising. But all the time you know she's headed for love...or at least you root for her to get her guy (er, I mean, angel).

Dreams are not controllable.

But is it a dream? She meets up with Michael, a denizen of what he calls The Crossroads, which is a place between mortality and eternity. There is no hope for it; he isn’t able to answer the question as to why she is there, and therefore takes her to a crystal dwelling he calls Halo City.

Phillip, who is obviously in high authority there, informs Claudia that she is in the thick of a population of alkins, a race of half-angels, half-humans. And now she is in the thick of some trouble as well, for if the “fallen” (those who rebelled against angelic authority and were allied with the forces of darkness) get wind of her knowledge, they will use her to get into the tightly-fortified Halo City to wage war against the alkins.

Michael and several other officers of Halo City are appointed to watch over Claudia as she goes about her daily mortal duties, but she is harassed again and again by Aden, the leader of the fallen. He believes that Claudia is the key to getting into the alkins’ city. Whether she is on the job with Patty, her best friend, camping with her church group, or attending a party, Aden will not stop at trying to get her to give her soul over to him.

And when it’s discovered that Claudia is more than she ever thought she was, her protection is more important than ever. This is a job that both Claudia and Michael learn to love. For they have discovered that love can transcend both time and laws.

I picked up this book, planning to read a short bit of it on a flight from New Orleans to home, but I ended up reading the entire story during the journey. It was simply too good to put down. I’d like to say from the start that I do not read romances, but this one made me realize why this genre is so popular. It wasn’t graphic and we didn’t have intimate bedroom scenes, which I think is the sign of really intelligent writing. Every time something romantic and intense would come up, there would be a clearing of the throat from a third party, and some embarrassed smiles.

Every character was clearly delineated, very believable, and a pleasure to get to know. And the way Michael treated Claudia, the words he used to describe his love—I was going “awww!” so much I thought my fellow plane passengers might think me nuts.

There is a section in the first part of the book that doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the story, but once I’d finished the last page, it was clear to me that, even at the beginning, Ms. Ting was alluding to events in her next book.

This book is a little bit cheesy, but it's a very sweet and interesting story. I'm usually not into all the demons and supernatural beings, but this book didn't go overboard. There were a few confusing moments trying to keep track of every character. The main character leads a double life, one with her normal friends and family, the other with supernatural beings. My goodness, this book was horrid. I cannot understand why this book has so many five star reviews. I have now vowed never to trust Goodreads' reviews again.
