Once a reader recognizes Cussler isn't trying to create high literary fiction, or even a story that attempts to be fairly realistic, and agrees to suspend his disbelief, he is treated to a melodramatic tale that is pretty much non-stop action.
His colloborations with Graham Browne, to create the Kurt Austin variant of the NUMA books are among the best of the series.
This time, the gang at Numa are facing (no surprise here) a threat that could possibly destroy the world as we know it. Once again,...more

Devil’s Gate by Clive Cussler is a Kurt Austin story. It follows him and his investigations into the plans of an African Dictator by the name of Djemma Garand. Djemma Garand has big plans for his small country, he wants to make a super weapon for his nation because he wants “a legacy that would leave his people better off for all eternity”(Cussler 64 ). His scientific team however, was unable to develop such a weapon of mass destruction, so Djemma Garand snatches an international super scientist...more
Although I've long been a Cussler fan, I must admit that Devil's Gate was my first try at a Kurt Austin Adventure. Unfortunately, it left me a bit disappointed. Kurt and his sidekick Joe Zavala are far to similar to the legendary Dirk and Al for them to be interesting and intriguing. IN true Cussler style, the hero team constantly finds itself in mortal danger, yet narrowly dodges the grim reaper time and again. Such is to be expected from the adventure genre, but it was a bit over-the-top for m...more
A favorite sweatshirt; a grilled cheese sandwich; the smell of warm towels fresh out of the dryer; any Cussler story from the Numa Files. Predictable and comforting are not necessarily equated to "bad". There has never been a Cussler book that doesn't have the ruggedly handsome hero, his ingenious sidekick of complementary ethnically diverse heritage, a textbook villain of the highest caliber of sinister, and the obligatory hottie who is immune to the charms of our hero.
But that's okay. As long...more

Clive Cussler has always written fast-paced, interesting thrillers, and he is one of a handful of authors in the action/adventure genre who I really never tire of reading. Somehow, he manages to keep his novels fresh even as he uses the same formula time and again (a historical incident involving bad guys as a prologue, then a flash forward to the present where somehow, the historical incident becomes ensnared with present-day bad guys and the National Underwater Marine Agency, or NUMA character...more
Ninth in the NUMA Files suspense series revolving around Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala.
Be sure to read the Prologue.
My Take
Okay, this was not one of my favorites. Normally, I can't read fast enough. This one I actually put down every once in awhile as my mind wandered. There's action in here, but it's a bit toned down, not like the usual. Still, there's plenty of fun gadgets, great escapes, and the usual romance spiced with danger.

I'm Starting to worry about Mr Cussler, is he starting to drift down the James Patterson route of getting books to market and releasing multi books per year to pander to volume rather than quality?
I have never given less than 4 * for a cussler adventure before because for the genre and style they were well written well paced and action packed, I'm not so sold on this one and Numa is one of the series i really like (I'm not such a fan of Bell).

This is another Kurt Austin adventure from the NUMA Files, and it's not bad. As a matter of fact, it is pretty darn good, considering that, as with all of Cussler's novels, it features an extraordinarily unlikely situation with wholly unbelievable action, based on science that just won't happen. But that has been true of all of Cussler's books, or books with which he is involved in these end-of-life pairings, and we still get the books and read them, because they're great fun to read. I really d...more
We start in the Azores with Hudson Wallace (great name!) and his Lockheed Constellation and the adventure quickly goes into high gear. Then starts the story of the Kinjara Maru and where we first see our main character Kurt Austin about to embark on a journey, he thought, to join his friend Joe Zavala for a submersible race in their prototype Barracuda and some much needed R&R. Of course if they actually GOT their R&R we wouldn't have a story, would we?

This is a Kurt Austin novel. Like all of Cussler's books, this one starts in the past. The year is 1951, and a Russian defector is trying to get to the United States with several large locked trunks. His airplane is lost off of the Azores. Fast forward to the present day. A Japanese cargo ship in the eastern Atlantic near the Azores bursts into flames. Not only the ship but the crew, as well. A gang of pirates speeds to take advantage of the disaster, but as they are escaping, their boat explode...more
#9 in the Kurt Austin, NUMA Files series. With this entry, Clive Cussler changes his co-author for the series from Paul Kemprecos (author of the excellent "Soc" Socarides series)to Graham Brown. Devil's Gate is yet another threat of Armageddon by a would be world dictator with a super weapon - sort of James Bond redux.

Clive Cussler always entertains. I look forward to his books and this certainly did not disappoint me. Kurt Austin is such a hero. James Bond and Indiana Jones in one person. I enjoy that there is always a spark of romance, but it is a byproduct of the story and not the story itself. The Trouts are just enjoyable as are his other couples in other books. Their banter in the sub was hysterical. The characters are very likeable. I found myself smiling several times at the repartee. There were also...more
Filled with the high-stakes suspense and boundless invention unique to Cussler, Devil's Gate is on par with his other books. Fast-paced, couldn't put down, exciting. Fun to read.....

I don't remember reading any Cussler books in the past. So . . . being the first one, I will probably read another in future. It was good enough that I wouldn't mind reading more. I liked the action, the plot and the characters. Even though, as many reviewers have noted, it is fantastical and improbable, the situation, as well as the constant "getting out of danger" that happens to all the good guys (and gals), but that's what we're all looking for, isn't it? A happily ever after, the good trium...more

OK, like my friend Louise says, you always know what you are getting with a Clive Cussler book. I started reading about Dirk Pitt many years ago on a recommendation from Brent Erickson. I have been a fan every since and look forward to each and every book in any of the series. Like I started out. . . you always know what you are going to get: a hero and a villian. The bad guy is out to destroy or control the world and the hero of course, saves it! Whether it is Dirk Pitt or Kurt Austin, Joe Zava...more
As usual, cussler with his customary co-author, have delivered an entertaining ride, fantastical but not far enough beyond credulity to render the plot premise stupid. I liked the take on the political.minnow taking on the dominant world powers and nearly getting away with it. I also liked the sense of vulnerability added to some of the characters, although NUMA cant afford to too many staff develop hydrophobia! It continues to surprise me that some factual and grammatical errors occur - they ar...more
Ah...Another great summer read from the NUMA Files. A few years back, I started reading Kurt Austin adventures with an apprehension that they would not be as satisfying to me as the Dirk Pitt series. But, to my pleasure, they have added a whole new dimension to the gang from NUMA. Devil's Gate is another action filled roller coaster ride with our heroes, Kurt and Joe leading the charge to save the world once again. Graham Brown is a great addition to the Cussler stable and I look forward to more...more
A Cussler is a Cussler is a Cussler. If you've read his books, the wild escapes are totally unbelievable, and yet you still keep reading the books. The characters are fun devil-may-care types who are amazingly resilient to pain, unbelievably brilliant, and good looking as well. And despite the complete cotton candy fluffiness of the storyline, I just keep reading them. They're a fun easy romp, no demands, no nightmares or social concerns to keep me up at night, just like watching a really breezy...more
I've enjoyed all of Cussler's fiction, but this is one of his best. Thoroughly enjoyed it! I don't get where the negative reviewers are coming from. Yes, the plot is a little outlandish, but that's a Cussler trademark, and part of what makes it fun! Yes... it is "same old" in a way... all of Cusslers books are built on the same formula, but that's why we keep buying them! When you pick up a Cussler book, you know what you're getting!

Overall I have to say I was severely disappointed. This book looked good when I first picked it up-- With the Azores and Japan, what could go wrong? The author is also fairly popular. So I took it home and started reading. I ended up losing my first copy on a public bus, and should have taken that as a hint: Stay away.

I really enjoy Clive Cussler novels. In this one, Kurt Austin and his team from the National Underwater Maritime Agency or NUMA as it is known by, are drawn to investigate an underwater graveyard of ships and planes off the coast of Africa. Little do they know that they are tampering with the ambitions of an African dictator who is creating a weapon of almost mythical power! Kurt Austin adventures are especially great to read because Cussler also includes his hero from his primary series, Dirk P...more
NUMA is Cussler's agency for oceanic research and Kurt and Joe are the ones who get to have all the adventures in this thriller. Our heros have to stop the plan of an African dictator to build a weapon that can destroy cities. Scientists from all over the world are kidnapped and forced to build the reactor that can do the job. Of course one scientist is a young Russian woman and Kurt has his charms.

I just don't think this book was my cup of tea. I listened to it on the drive to work and I found myself annoyed by little things like the dialogue tags were always "he said." Hearing that dozens of times really started grating on my nerves. There were a few times when descriptions were duplicated only a few sentences or paragraphs apart. It was an interesting story, but not quite as fast paced as I had anticipated. This was my first Clive Cussler novel, but I may give him another shot in the fu...more
I haven't read a Clive Cussler book in quite a while and I had forgotten how good escapism fiction can be. A fast-paced adventure-packed global thriller starring the usual NUMA regulars Kurt, Joe, Paul and Gamay. Even Dirk Pitt plays a cameo role. Perhaps the only danger is overdoing the old Cussler signature life and death underwater submersible struggle. There's always a pocket of (hot) air somewhere. Otherwise an excellent read!
and one-half star
Ultimately, the story is a High Noon.
The good sheriff versus the evil rustler.
After, many trials and tribulations, the sheriff triumphs
and wins the girls' heart.
This novel is a little different approach than standard
Clive Cussler fare.
In fairness, because Mr. Cussler's novel are so fast paced,
I read this one a chapter at a time to slow down the tempo
and appreciate it all the more.

A new Cussler featuring Kurt Austin with the rest of the NUMA gang as they track down an anomaly discovered off the Azores and run head on into a plot by the leader of African country of Sierra Leone who has developed a new and effective weapon of mass destruction. With typical Cussler effectiveness and luck Austin and the gang take on the challenge. Fun and fast read as always.
Truthfully, I was reluctant to read any Cussler series other than the Dirk Pitt series. I needn't have worried. This is still Cussler in Top form and I am happy to say that there are more books in the Austin series to read, as well as the Oregon Files series.
A great weekend read, a great beach read, a great vacation read. A great any time read!

I am a BIG Clive Cussler fan. Read HUGE. I think I've read most of his books, beginning with the Dirk Pitt adventures in my early 20s to his latest stuff still appearing on the bestseller lists today. Out of all the different story lines that Clive has put his name to, namely Dirk Pitt, more recently Kurt Austin and the NUMA Files, The Oregon Adventures, The Fargo's and of course, the Isaac Bell Adventures, I think the Fargo's are my least favourite. My best is Isaac Bell and the Oregon adventur...more

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997.
