I'm loving these graphic novels, it's nice to see these characters developed a little more, even if River is still as complex as ever. Better Days was a great story; all the others were interesting I just think the artwork was lacking in them; though more Wash was good to see.

A collection of stories from various points in the timeline of Joss Whedon's Firefly universe. I liked this better than The Shepherd's Tale -- it's still quite vignettey, with Better Days (which I've already read) being the plottiest story, but most of the art is really good and it has some awesome moments. Simon treating Jayne for an STD, for example... It goes exactly as you would imagine, with their flirting bickering and Jayne being an idiot.

The last story is set after Serenity, and confirms...more

Nice to see the Dark Horse one-offs published in a volume. Too bad it's a reprint of the previously-published "Better Days" instead of a standalone. "Better Days" is a good story with tight dialog and a good feel for the characters; it's probably my favorite of the three larger Dark Horse comics. "The Other Half" is a good action tale. The artwork in "Downtime" is inferior to the rest but the interplay between River and Book on its final page is good. "Float Out" is my favorite of the extras, an...more

I always love to read Firefly/Serenity related material. This show was taken from the air far to quickly and I would have loved to see it go on for at least 7 seasons. Anyway, on to the review.

Better Days 1-3: 4 stars. First off the art in these 3 (plus the others in the book) is great. I could immediately tell who was who and the artists did a great job in capturinng the actors likenesses. In this story our beloved crew does a job, as they do many times before, however when they get there thei...more

The second volume in the Serenity graphic novels this one contains the story Better Days as well as a collection of other single issue stories. Spread out from before Firefly to after Serenity this adds a lot more to the Firefly universe.

Namely that River is fucked up and that Wash will always be the best character.

This is just another episode from the show in comic book format along with three short stories about River and Wash. It’s always fun to read (or hear) the unique way of speaking that is Firefly/Serenity. Other than that there is little of import in this book. The stories of Wash’s past are more anecdotes about his piloting exploits, which sound more like unlikely bragging than real stories and don’t feature much of Wash’s signature sarcastic humor – unfortunately because his humor is one of the...more

Having typed up a review for this before and then find it hasn't saved i'm only giving an abridged (pretty-much spoiler-free) version -.-
Better Days i'd read before, and is a nice lil story. Not my favourite though I did like the portrayal of the characters. Favourite bits were one particular scene between Mal & Inara near the end, and River's 'dream' which i found rather hilarious upon my first readthrough.
The Other Half i thought was the weakest of the four stories purely because I didn't...more

Bottom line, it would be a better day if the Serenity were still flying. And while I'm wishing, I want Wash to still be her pilot, and the Shepherd to still be in the back, keeping his secrets and reading his book. Not to mention keeping that hair of his under control. If you watched the show, you know exactly what I mean.

In the meantime, we all keep the dream alive as best we can.

The graphic short story collection from Dark Horse Books, Better Days and other stories (Serenity, volume 2), is par...more

I’m SO glad they finally reprinted one of the three volumes and with all of the one-off comics that hadn’t been published anywhere but in random omnibus collections from Dark Horse so far. ;_; I really am. Especially “The Other Half”, as I have a huge soft spot for Wash in my silly little heart. The art has been gorgeously updated, now in hardback for the first time, and if you’re a Firefly/Serenity/Joss Whedon fan, this updated version of “Better Days” definitely belongs in your collection.

never watched firefly. thought serenity the movie was ok.
serenity the comic is just not for me. perhaps if i were more familiar with the characters it would have worked better. perhaps if some of the writing had been better edited.
the main story is the weakest of the book. the smaller back-up stories are ok.
doubt i will be seeking out other volumes in the series.

I do love me some Serenity comics. I appreciate that Joss Whedon and Co. have continued the stories of such beloved characters in another medium. It keeps the magic going for us Browncoats, and expands the canon of the 'verse.

Much of the artwork is wonderful (short story Downtime being the sole exception, I feel), and the characterizations are dead on with the TV show. Of course, that's not unexpected, being that Joss and Co. wrote these stories, but nonetheless, it's nice to really feel like yo...more

I loved the tv shows and, since I find the graphics novels to be so respectful of the tv series, I love them too. Whether it be the drawing, the scenarios, the character's personnality or the sense of humor, I find it is all true to what the show was about! Did I mention the humor? Because I did find myself laughing out loud. It's definitely money well spent and I'll buy the next one without regret!

This one included three stories. Better Days, Downtime & The Other Half.

They are all like watching the show. There's humor, action, suspense, romance, everything! Even these short stories don't disappoint!

This was another re-read for me, but there were some shorts in the hardcover version that I had never read so I had to pick it up. All of the stories in this volume are wonderful. I will say that at some points, the main title in this collection, "Better Days" became a bit hard to follow because there seemed to be a number of different things going on. But it pretty much cleared itself up eventually. What I love the most is how well the writers capture the characters voices. There were so many l...more

The main story was good for the first two-thirds and then kinda fell apart in the end. The back-up stories were kinda fun, but I didn't really learn as much about Wash's backstory as I would have liked to.

also good. different teams worked on the different stories...always neet to see what depictions may take place when that sort of thing happens. anywho, fans will enjoy this one.
Angie Lisle
I enjoy the graphic novels - I like having more story and character info, but the graphic novels make me miss the show. It's not the same experience.

Gotta love revisits to the Firefly-verse, especially when they add to what we know of the characters without giving everything away.
Jessica
Joss Whedon's television series and movies are always so amazing - he's such a masterful storyteller - that I keep forgetting how lackluster his graphic novels are. I had the same "meh" reaction to Angel and Buffy graphic novels, and to other Firefly graphic novels, but I'm such a Browncoat that it's like I have selective amnesia. If you are a diehard fan of whichever series, you will find something to like - otherwise I recommend skipping this one. (FYI: this book collects a few previously, sep...more

Much more enjoyable than "Those Left Behind". The stories in this volume read just like a lost episode of the show. As I enjoyed the book, I kept getting sad that the show is gone. Sometimes, there's no winning.
Either way, "Better Days" is a lot of fun, considering we get to see the crew make some cash for once. The other stories are decent, mostly focusing on River and her place with Mal and the Shepherd. The art is decent, doing a good job at getting the characters to look right. Overall, I'm...more

This was great fun and got me all nostalgic again. Oh shiny show, why gone so soon?

I cherish any return to the Firefly 'verse, gorrammit.

Worth it for the last two panels alone.

This is a compilation of stories that take place across the continuum of what we knew about "Firefly" - some stories take place after the tv show, and one even takes place after the timeline of the movie "Serenity". Some of the illustrators I cared for less in this book since sometimes the characters didn't look like their actor counterpart and sometimes it was hard to tell in the pictures which person it was. The stories held true to the 'Verse though so any Firefly fan would eat them up!

A mixed bag of Firefly/Serenity tales from various Dark Horse comics and mini-series, ranging from great to pretty good. In the title story, the team comes into a windfall, leading to much amusing tale-telling of what they're planning on doing with their cut. Other stories include a brief meeting with Reavers, a walk in the snow by River and who she met there, and a wake (and accompanying reminiscences) held by some old friends of Wash.

A good read for fans of the series and movie.
Matt Levy
I think this might be my favorite of the Firefly comics. Even the short one-offs are great.

Having already read the Better Days miniseries, the opening part of this hardcover volume was all refresher. The new materials deal with solo one-shots added to justify the printing costs. The Wash tribute was scattered and empty, making me miss a full-on story about our dinosaur-loving ship pilot. A brief snowstorm blip and a battle of loyalties rounds out this collection; despite the good news of more Serenity, I would rather have Joss and company at the helm.
Taleisin
This one was okay (not as good as the first in the series). The story could have used a little more fleshing out.
Megan
fast, fun read. like visiting an old friend and finding out what they've been up to these days. i'm a firefly fan so it makes me partial to begin with, but i loved the stories and how they feel just like a short episode. i can hear their voices in the dialogue, i can imagine the scenes in between panels. in a way it's bittersweet because i love revisiting this universe and it makes me sad all over again that it was cut short.
