In an isolated star system far from any other human outposts, a space-faring "lifeboat" was discovered by a scientist from the city of Silk. Inside the lifeboat was a two-year-old girl in frozen sleep. She had no name and no history. The people of Silk believed her to be the only survivor of a star-faring great ship attacked in the void and destroyed by the automated warsh...more

Skye Object 3270a a book that can be classified as middle grade or YA — personally I’d call it YA because a) it’s about teenagers and b) I don’t really understand where the boundaries for middle grade are supposed to be anyway. On the other hand, the main character is 14, a little younger than standard for YA and the romantic story line isn’t super serious as in many YA books.

Skye Object 3270a is set on and above a distant planet in...more

I just finished reading Skye Object 3270a by Linda Nagata, a highly adventurous and futuristic book. Generally, sci-fi stories don’t interest me, but I was instantly hooked after reading the first chapter. A scientist from the city of Silk discovers a lifeboat floating amidst the solar system. Inside is a 2 year old child, who is in a frozen induced sleep and believed to be the only survivor of her kind. She is given the name Skye Object 3270a. Skye has grown up in Silk and is currently an adven...more

As a big reader of science fiction and of YA books, I was really excited to read "Skye Object 3270a" by Linda Nagata. Overall I thought the story to be enjoyable. I did think that the author kind of dumbed-it down for YA audiences, and that is a shame. YA audiences don't need to have things dumbed-down. There is a really good story in this, but it needs to be fleshed out more. I didn't understand why the author loved the word "sooth" so much or why she felt she needed to add a character like Orb...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It combined the best of both science fiction and young adult: likeable teenage characters struggling to find their place in a high-tech alien world. In particular, I found it fascinating how the widespread nanotech shaped both the society and the universe.

But the story isn’t about the technology, it’s about the characters, their adventures, and the friendships that form between them. This was what really made the story come alive for me. There’s a small amount of...more

I won this book through goodreads. Skye Object 3270a is sci-fi, similar genre to my favorite (urban fantasy). So, it took me about 20-30 pages to switch my gears from vampires/werewolves etc to aliens and strange new planets. I also found the start a little slow - but after I reread the synopsis on the back of the book, I started getting into it.

It follows Skye, her best friend Zia, a young astronomer Devi, and adventuresome Buyu as they try to solve the mystery surrounding Skye's past. Skye was...more

I think most yound adult sci-fi fans will love this book. I didn't know going in that it was young adult, but it did keep my attention throughout. I finished this book in one sitting. It did lack the depth you would expect if it were written for adults. I would have loved to read more about the world the explore at the base of the planet, but it seemed too short, as was most the story. Would love to see this extended into a more elaborate story. If I were to rate this as a book for adults I'd on...more

This is pretty average teenage material, with the usual round of being chased by large creatures with teeth, going into a vat of seething tentacles, and dealing with adults who do not understand. The plot is fairly coherent, but there is not much else to praise.
