Ich erinnere, mich als Kind Coopers Lederstrumpf-Romane lesend in eine andere Welt weggeträumt zu haben. Mehr ist davon nicht in meiner Erinnerung. Der Bravo blieb mir damals völlig unbekannt und hätte mich wohl nicht begeistert, denn dieser Schauerroman ist für infantile Träumereien nicht geeignet. Andererseits gibt es nichts, was mich veranlassen könnte, die Jugendbekanntschaft mit diesem Autor aufzufrischen. Marcel Reich-Ranicki hat wiederholt darauf hingewiesen, daß manche Lektüre, die einst ...more
SEt in Venice, this seemed to be the right thing to read while there. Alas, it is very much a ponderous piece of writing. Lots of turgid philosophical discussions - particularly contrasting the Venetian style of government to the nascent US - interrupting a plot very much of its time. I don't regret reading it, but it is a read for those who are already confirmed James Fenimore Cooper fans, rather than a pleasant surprising discovery.
Being as JFC's mother is a blood relative I am more than obligated to read his books.

James Fenimore Cooper was a popular and prolific American writer. He is best known for his historical novel The Last of the Mohicans, one of the Leatherstocking Tales stories, and he also wrote political fiction, maritime fiction, travelogues, and essays on the American politics of the time. His daughter Susan Fenimore Cooper was also a writer.
