As one might expect from a collection of one shots by various writers, this is a bit of a mixed bag. They range from pretty bad (Rob Williams' Captain America and the Falcon) to not sure how I feel about this (William Harms' Captain America and Crossbones) to average (Kathryn Immonen's Captain America and the First Thirteen, Kelly Sue DeConnick's Captain America and the First Avengers). The real standout here is Kieron Gillen's Captain America and Batroc. It's a tight, fun, clever little story ...more
I'm reading a lot of comics these days because, since Sarah is away at a conference, I can read at night with a light on. (Otherwise I usually use the "night" setting on my Kindle/Nook/Kobo app. Unfortunately, there's no way to read comics at night without creating a lot of light, which is why I'm binging this week.)

So, again, because I'm interested in World War II these days (hint hint about a current work-in-progress), I read this Captain America collection, which really is just a collection o

While Captain America is the common link that ties all of these characters together, based on the title alone I was expecting him to be the main character. Instead, this is a collection of one-shot stories each featuring one ally or enemy of Captain America with him appearing minimally and sometimes not at all. That being said, while it wasn't what I was expecting, it was still a pretty good read. As with any collection of short stories or one shots, it's always hard to judge the whole ...more

This was an enjoyable read for a Captain America book where Captain America is not the focus, at all. Each story is tailored to one issue and complete upon itself. While reading about each character the feeling of each character (inspired by the artists also) really came to life. The only thing I have to say about this is during Agent 13's (Sharon Carters) story in which Captain America character and manners felt really out of place, considering the circumstances. Personally, I had a hard to ...more

This was not my favorite. I thought that when I got this that it was one story, it was multiple stories. This was not a bad thing but some of the art work for the stories was not good and I couldn't keep my attention on what was going on in the story. What I did like about it was that each section started off with a character explanation. I found that really interesting to get background information on the characters.

I really enjoyed this collection, but to call them Captain America stories is rather disingenuous. He's tangential AT BEST to the stories of these one-shots. But that's probably why I enjoyed them because I don't really like Cap stories - they're boring and overly patriotic for a country I couldn't care less about.

So, yeah, great stories, but not Cap stories, so go into it with that in mind.

Spotlight stories on both Agents 13, the Falcon, Batroc, Crossbones & Black Widow. All at different points in Cap's timeline, and with him strictly as a background character to the primary actors in the stories. Again, complementary art styles to the moods and the moments - most of what's here is played for a sort of "intersections of fate" vibe, but good stories, all. Even the Batroc one.

one of the best Cap volumes i've read. the story told from batroc's point of view was excellent as was the black widow/agent 13 and crossbones stories.

that kieron gillen and william harms could make two villans three dimensional was really impressive.

Mostly decent side stories of many of the side characters of the Captain America drama.
At least I got this for free from the library,
and also the book kinda says what it is
so I did not expect much

Not much to say about this. The Batroc story was the best of the bunch for me. The rest were just ok.

Good book. As with any book with multiple stories by multiple writers the quality varies but still well done. The Batroc story was the best IMO.

Not the best compilation I've every read. I liked Peggy's story the best, but overall, not enough Cap.

Series of Captain America-related stories featuring the Falcon, Crossbones, Batroc and others. They vary as you might expect from good to ordinary. Reasonable collection but nothing special.
