It's been a long time since I enjoyed a book as much as this. Yes, I'm from Jersey, but that's not the reason. What a smart, clever book with a plot that you can see coming but still keeps you engaged. Liebman's grasp of the dialect is perfect. Not affected, not quirky, not done for impact, it's just how they talk. He grabs it. I also enjoyed his characters. While they don't jump fully formed from the page, the way he weaves their complexities is fascinating. For example, the "bad guy" is a kill...more

Meet Junne and his partner Mickie, two Camden lawyers, defenders of the more criminal element in Camden, NJ. Both former cops who went to law school nights and now are spending their law degrees getting their clients off in court.

They also have a friend in low places who they regularly defend in court. Slippery scares them! Their landlord is an accident lawyer who's cornered the market in clients who may or may not be in pain. And their new secretary had been the waitress they loved at a local d...more
I won this book on First Reads. This was a very interesting book to me. I have always been a fan of "Law and Order" and other crime shows so this book was really up my alley. I haven't read many crime books lately so it was a refreshing change of pace. The way the author presents the details was amazing! I really didn't see until the very end how the story was going to unfold. I must say that this book stands at the edge of being a suspense book as well. I was definitely on the edge of my seat,...more
I was thrilled to win this one! Had it read cover-to-cover in less than a day after it showed up on my doorstep!!

Having grown up in Jersey, it was a hoot to spend some time with "Mickie" and "Junne" - two former cops turned lawyers. They're not rich, polished, or upscale - but they get better results than their rivals who are.

They have a former waitress for a secretary, a landlord accused of illegal wiretapping, a high profile client accused of tax evasion, and owe a life debt to the local drug...more
Ron Liebman painted a quirky realism not usually expected in a book about law and the lawless. The characters were so well formed you felt you knew them in some past life. It was not about the glamorous life of todays lawyers but rather a devient look at the lawyers not given to apear under the spotlight. The story had depth, sarcasm, compassion, and malice. You did not see in black and white but rather in grey the whole read. I thouroughly enjoyed this book and cant wait to get my hands on anot...more
Not my favorite but a solid read. Predictable. A lot of foul language.

I loved it, Ron!!! Your development of Junne and Mickie is great....we learn more and more about them! Having lived in the Camden area, I can really identify with the atmosphere and environment...even the verbal picture of the CC Courthouse! Been there and have seen inside and out! a consultant/witness not as a defendant! Can't wait for the third volume!!! Keep writing!
I would give this about 2.5. I was disappointed and it pains me to write to those words. Especially about a book about the law. I was hoping for so much more but it really feel flat and just didn't deliver in the end. Starting out it had promise but quickly went downhill for me. *** Please note I received this book for free from Goodreads - First Reads.
Goodreads Giveaway Book.

Entertaining legal thriller with comic moments and quirky characters. Mickie and Junne, cops turned lawyers, defend the worst of Camden New Jersey’s lowlife and slightly not so lowlife in a complex series of intertwined cases. Even though they walk a very fine line ethically Mickie and Junne have heart.
A book about criminal defense lawyers in New Jersey. On principle, I should hate it. The story moved at a nice pace. Of course, I didn't realize it was the second book in the series when I picked it up, so I feel like I missed a few pieces of back story that would have added to this novel.
good stuff
just waiting for the interview responses now

started this today. Have an interview with the author in the works. Pretty funny stuff so far for a legal thriller abut two lawyers representing drug dealers and gang leaders in Jersey
Two former patrol cops turned working class lawyers find themselves caught between their drug lord main client, the ambitious district attorney and pretty much every other character to appear in the book.
really 3.5 stars. interesting main characters -- lawyerly without being a procedural or just another legal drama. I would definitely pick up the first outing if I ran across it
