For more than 60 years, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have lived as Israeli citizens within the borders of the nation formed at the end of the 1948 conflict. Occupying a precarious middle ground between the Jewish citizens of Israel and the dispossessed Palestinians of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Palestinians have developed an exceedingly complex ...more

Provides a chronological history of Palestinians living in Israel. It would be interesting to get a response to this book from the Israeli Government. Would they deny the basic gist of the book or accept it on the basis of their right to defend themselves. Just some of the issues detailed in the book; all the symbols of the Israeli state relate to Judaism (the flag and the anthem), Palestinians are prevented from jobs due to employers requesting only those who have served in army ( Palestinians ...more

A meticulous account of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the years immediately following the establishment of Israel in 1948. Pappé is a meticulous historian who made use of recently released archival material (such as notes and journals of some of the main actors and leaders of the time) to determine the exact nature of the policy towards Palestinians and Palestinian villages post 1948, and also to catalogue forced removals, destruction of villages, massacres and rapes as noted in these ...more

When we think of "Palestinians" we usually think of the Arabs living in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. Most of the Palestinians fled or were expelled by Zionist forces in 1947 and 1948, but a minority remained and a few were added as Israel annexed areas like Wadi Ara. This is the history of the Arab minority in Israel and Pappé tells it well, often with the first-hand insight only an Israeli can give. That said, as helpful as Pappé's account is, I can't help but think that a more detached and ...more

Important topic, but the writing is a little sloppy. And of course, the author can't really escape his identity as an Israeli, and often makes comments about how colonialism has in ways helped the Palestinians, about how primitive Palestinian society is (judged from a Western paradigm), and devalues Palestinian nationalism as a futile attempt of a society under siege, rather than the full right of the Palestinian people as a body with a coherent identity.
I first became aware of Ilan Pappé after reading Gaza in Crisis: Reflections on Israel's War Against the Palestinians which combined some of his articles with those of Noam Chomsky.
What I read was quite a game changer and view altering affair. If you had told me before I read it that I would be so moved and adrenalised by an Israeli, especially on a subject as close to my heart as Palestine, I would have struggled to believe you at all.

It was pretty much the positive effect his contributions to

Ilan Pappe did a great job giving voice to a people who are silenced by the military boot of Israel. Grounded and supported by statistical evidence not even the Israeli can deny, Pappe's work is a must read for all concerned about the Palestinian issue

Over 100 pages in now. The biased language is frustrating, but once you get through some of the early tragedy, the history becomes more useful and stands on its own better.
