I read the book Jacki and Me by Dan Gutman. It was a great book about this kid who needs to write a report on someone. He has a special power so when he holds a baseball card he gets to travel through time to see that person. He chooses Jackie Robinson a African American baseball player back in 1940's. Back then it was really racist and very discriminated. When he goes back into time his skin starts to turn black, and he gets a taste of how it was back than, and how hard it was. Jackie Robinson...more

My impression of Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman was very good. It starts of with Joe the protagonist having to write a school report of a significant African-American. He strangely has away to travel back in time by holding a baseball card so he decides to go back and meet Jackie Robinson. When he arrives with Jackie Robinson he realizes he turned African-American when he went back in time. Joe felt what it was like to be a black man back in 1947 when they were treated poorly. He asks Jackie about...more

I have become a big fan of this kids series. The hero, Joe Stoshak can travel through time using old baseball cards to meet his sports heroes. This one is heavier than the first two since it deals with Jackie Robinson's first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Gutman has to shoehorn in a lot of information and still make it interesting, and he does it well. When my son was reading it he said to me several times, "Wow, did you know...." or "This is so interesting." And while Gutman never forgets w...more
Jackie & Me is the second book of Dan Gutman's baseball card series. In this book, Joe Stosh, the main character, travels back in time to 1947. In this adventure he meets Jackie Robinson during his rookie year for the Dodgers. This adventure showed Joe the harsh reality of the racism that Jackie faced as the first black or African American Major League Baseball player. Joe experiences the hate letters that Jackie received as well as the taunting that followed him onto the field. The greatest...more
I like this book alot. The main character Joe Stoshack goes back in time to meet jakie robinson with just a baseball card. His mom always doesn't know if that would be such a good idea. I would highly recommend that this book would be good for any sports fans out there. He forgot his baseball cards back in time and they were worth 1 million dollars.
I think it would be very cool to go back in time to meet jackie robinson. It would also be cool to see the old yankee stadium. This book intrests me...more

Little Kid Reaction: I personally recommend this book for any reader, be they a girl, boy, or even an adult. Even now, at 15, this book awakens in me such an amazing feeling in ways not many other books have or, maybe, ever will.
Big Kid Reaction: These are fascinating stories, and I can second what our teen reader says: they are enjoyable as an adult, too ... even as a Mom! The action is well paced, but slow enough for you to consider what is happening and start drawing out the lessons.

This is the first one of Gutman's baseball time travel books that I've read, and wow do I get the appeal. It was an easy read (this can likely be read by third and fourth graders) and there was plenty of story without forcing familiar heroes into ridiculous situations. My only complaint, and it is a serious one is Gutman's free use of the n-word. And he writes it out. He says it's a bad word, sure, but then proceeds to use it a handful of times. You don't see him dropping the f-bomb in his book...more
I recommend this book to sports people and anybody interested in historical figures. Joe Stoshack has to write a report on an African American who has made a contribution to society. Joe has a special talent that nobody else has. With the help of old baseball cards, he can travel through time. Joe decides to go back in time to meet Jackie Robinson, to find out what it was like to be the man who broke baseball's color barrier. He plans on writing a prize-winning report. He didn't plan on a trip t...more
Joe Stoshack travels through time using a baseball card to meet its player. In this Baseball Card Adventure book, Joe travels back to 1947 to meet Jackie Robinson. When he shows up, he's not only been transported to Brooklyn, NY, he's black. Joe witnesses the prejudice that Jackie Robinson faced as he joined the Major Leagues and experiences himself the racial attitudes of the day. By the end of his adventures he's learned a trick or two from Jackie Robinson about controlling his temper, when to...more

This book is about racsim and how you used to be treated differently based on the color of your skin. I did not like Dan Gutman's approach to the topic though. It is about a kid that travels back and time and is able to change his skin color. WHile this does allow him to see how each race is treated, nothing in the book is possible. Also by going back to his class and telling a story about his adventure he gets his little league suspension lifted. I feel there are much better ways to approach th...more

His teacher assigns the students to write a paper about and inspiring African-American. Joe chooses Jackie Robinson. In "Jackie & Me" by Dan Gutman, Joe Stoshack writes a paper for school about a black person who made a change in the world, and he picks Jackie Robinson. As he can travel back in time, he travels and turns out to be black back in 1947. This makes him struggle, and he has to be in the same position as Jackie was in back when he started playing. He has to go through the struggles Jackie did, and all black people and how they felt when white people were so ignorant.
An incredible story of the first black man playing pro baseball. This book is historical fiction. It is a story about a boy who can go back through time using baseball cards. He meets his favorite players and learns not only about them but also America during those times. The end of the book has notes of facts in the book, changes made to create the fiction story, and a lot more facts that are not in the story.
Im really interested in sports books. I love reading about sports history as well.
This book is about a young boy (Stoch) who has the power to time travel. The cool thing is he uses baseball cards to do it. This book is an adventure back to the time when African Americans were not allowed to play sports. This story takes you through what it was like for Jackie in Stoch's eyes.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves sports or just wants a good quick read.

A fun read-aloud book combining some key interests: baseball and magic. We had read Ray & Me at some point in the past (about Ray Chapman who was killed being hit in the head by a pitch), but Jackie & Me brought in other elements like social significance which even the kids seemed to get.
P was four when we read it and he still counts Jackie Robinson as his favorite baseball player nearly a year later.

In the book Jackie and Me a boy named Joe Stoshack's life was so boring execept no one knew he could travel through time with BASEBALL CARDS.Joe had a report for Black History Month he knew that he was a sports fanatic so he chose Jackie Robinson. He went to Flip's Sports Store and bought a Robinson card.So he said goodbye to his mom and dad.He was in 1947 he found jackie's hotel and said he was
This is an excellent book for a kid's summer reading list. If you're a baseball fan, that is. All Dan Gutman's books are quick reads (145 pages)and mix the facts with a pleasant story. Joe's Stoshack is a cool kid.
I re-read it because of the Jackie Robinson movie that came out recently. Robinson's epitaph: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

Jackie and me is a very good book the reason that i like this book is that it tied in to my history day topic. This book is about Joe Stoshack the main person has to write a report on an African American who made a contribution to society. Joe was a sports freak that is why he picked Jackie Robinson. He has a special talent with his old baseball cards that he can travel through time.
A fun series of a time traveling baseball fan who gets to meet heroes from days gone by. It was intriguing that in this book, Joe finds himself in 1947 and a young African American. It's a little heavy handed on the "lessons" to be learned, but no more than you would expect for a book for middle school students. Gutman is almost always a good choice.
I have one of the Baseball Card Adventure series by Dan Gutman in my library. I finally got around to reading one of them and now know I want to purchase these rest of the books in the series. These are fast, exciting reads that I am sure many boys will enjoy. The facts at the end of the story even help readers to learn some new information!
Jackie and Me is a great book I'm reading currently for class. A boy name Joe Stoshack can travel through time. He takes a Jackie Robinson baseball card and feels a tingling sensation in order to go back and meet Jackie Robinson. Only his mom and dad Know about his special gift. Read the book to find out what happens next!!!!
Jackie & Me is the 2nd book in the baseball card adventure series. Yet again Stosh wants to go back in time and meet a famous baseball player. It all starts where he is severely insulted on the playing field, then loses his temper and tackles the pitcher and wrestles him to the ground. In response getting suspended from Little League for awhile. He later has to write a report for black history month on an African American figure. He decides to go back and visit Jackie Robinson. Through his t...more
Sean Madigan says, "It was a good book because it is a sports book, and I highly recommend it to my classmates.
