Into The Grey
by
Celine Kiernan (Goodreads Author)
A pacy, chilling ghost story from the creator of the internationally acclaimed Moorehawke Trilogy.
I think the fire changed us – me and Dom. I think that’s how the goblin-boy was able to see us. Though he’d been there for every summer of our childhood, we’d only been stupid boys until then. Stupid, happy, ignorant boys. And what in hell would he have had in common with two...more

The version I read was Into the Grey, but I own Taken Away too.
As usual, I am not going to write what happens in this book because you can always get that somewhere else.
I am a HUGE fan of the Moorehawke trilogy, and when I heard about her new book coming out I preordered it, which is something I hardly ever do. I'm thiking if you are interested in this book, it is highly likely you've read the trilogy and loved it. Now, I have a slight concern for you because this one is very diffeent from the...more

Yes, I know Celine to talk to but this doesn't stop me from being honest about liking this book.
Set in the early 70s this is the story of Patrick Finnerty and his family. His twin Dominick, his sister Deirdre, his mum, dad, grandmother who is slipping into dimentia and what happens when they have to move house when their house burns down (their grandmother is responsible)
It touches on issues of care falling on a single person in a family, and dealing with a dimentia patient. Then it takes a turn...more

It all started after the fire had consumed their home, their possessions, everything in the world they had but each other. At least they all still had each other. That is they did have each other, until the goblin boy showed up. He was there waiting for them, he had always been there, had always been waiting and now he had thought he had found what he was waiting for. Only he was wrong, and his mistake was going to cost a life.

Set in Dublin in 1974, Patrick and Dominick are 15 year old twins when their granny burns down the house where they live with her, their parents and little sister.
After the fire in which they lose everything they own, the family moves to the house near the sea where they usually spend their holidays. Almost immediately after arrival things start changing for Pat and Dom. Initially the changes are almost imperceptible; strange dreams followed by hunger attacks, an old man who nearly drowns in the...more

I loved this book, because it is a combination of two things, and I just *love* combo books (TM) :-) In this case, a gripping ghost story, and a beautiful evocation of family life, and in particular, the strength of a sibling's love for his brother. I don't do plot synopses, cos I myself hate spoilers and cos I want people to just go read books that I like themselves! All I'm gonna say, therefore, is that this is a great, pacey read, which wonderfully evokes 70's Dublin, with great little throwb...more
I started this book this morning and devoured it in one day. This hasn't happened in so long I don't actually remember the last time. Into the Grey captured my attention and held it in an unwavering grip until the very end. It's creepy, it's heartbreaking, it's exciting. It also captures Ireland of childhood in a haunting way (no pun intended).

Perhaps my knowing Celine makes me a bit biased but adored this book. I've never been a huge fan of novels about Irish families in general as I often find it very easy to criticize. But this book seemed to capture the essence of the irishness of the characters that both made it familiar to me but also universally accesible. The story is engrossing and I found that I had to slow myself down to fully appreciate all aspects of the novel. It was brilliant and fantastic and awesome and I cannot say e...more
Genuinely scary ghost possession story involving sets of twins that spans generations and asks questions about our minds - the fine lines between delusion / dreaming / imagination / madness / memory / dementia. Puzzling stuff and and an ideal All Hallows Read.

Some young readers might not have the background to understand about Irish / British hostilities, especially in relation to WWI and characters and relationships need concentration. But it gave me goosebumps.

As well as being a truly frightening ghost story, this book is a beautifully written tale of the connection between family members and in particular the special connection between siblings. The narrative voice is compelling and honest and the terror he feels as his brother is stolen away is palpable. The book is worthy of it's nomination for 2012 CBI awards and I wish the author all the best.

This was a creepy, well-written ghost story that takes place in the 70s (I think) in Ireland. Definitely worth a read if that sounds like something you would like.
I don't really know what to say about this one really. I started reading it at night, but it scared me so I switched to it being the book I read after a workout at the gym. But today I got to about 3/4 of the way through, came home and just kept reading because I just had to know how it all worked out.
I'm not saying anything more about the plot, the writing is really fab, and there are some great references to the music and TV of my youth that really set the scene for me.
I wouldn't mind reading...more
