I'm not sure why either. At first, I thought the heroine (Kat) was a very damaged woman. I was wrong. I didn't understand at all why she wanted love the way she did. The more I read the more I understood her and what she wanted....and I was ok with it. I personally am not one for bdsm, but it is interesting to read. I think this book made it ok for me...in a way. The spankings and submission is truly what Kat needed.

I have always said that I will never ever stand by and be verbally and physically abused, that's goes for sexually abused as well. I grew up around people abusing each other often. I'm not sure why woman do it, I can only imagine why, but I know for sure that I would not and could not let that ever happen to me. It's one thing to like sex rough, there are times when we all want it (let's be honest), but its another to be called 'slut' while you're having it or to be slapped so hard you have bruises on you. And that's what happened in this book. I was totally taken back by it since I've never read it before. Yet, I couldn't stop reading it.

I should start off by saying that this story has two main focuses...in a way, and two different time lines, which most people might have a problem with. I didn't. I actually enjoyed reading the different time lines, because, well, it was done just right. Each chapter was either past or present time. I wasn't lost or confused and I looked forward to each chapter. There are also two point of views as well. Again, not hard to follow and you get the hang of it early on. We have the main couple, David and Kat and the secondary couple, David's parents, Richard and Ellen. Although the story is meant to focus on David and Kat, the parents are such a strong focus as well.

David's father, Richard, sees woman as a lesser equal. He believes woman are suppose to submit and obey to men. David doesn't agree. But he wants to make his father proud so he starts to follow what his father says and make up lies to please him along the way....that is until Kat shows up. I lost so much faith in David....even though Kat was on board with it all.

David and Kat are both in college when they meet, starting off as lab partners. Their relationship is purely platonic yet both having feelings for each other. David feels an instant attraction to her and fights it as long as he can, that is until they meet by chance at the same club. Surprisingly to both, they enjoy the same flavor of love making. But David doesn't know what it means to be a Dom. So Kat takes the initiative and tops from the bottom, guiding David into the role of the dominate.

This book was so out of my comfort level but I think it's what I needed too. We see what it's like to be abused and loved at the same time. This book has a lot of sex in it but it needs to have it in order to understand the story. It was graphic but not dirty graphic...again, it's needed. There were some reviews I read where people were actually stunned with how David's mother, Ellen, acted after Richard's death. How can you be surprised by it! It was abused on so many levels (for 30 years!) it was scary! She probably saw it as a relief that he was no longer there to torture her and her son David.

I truly felt that David and Kat loved each other more than words can express....even though at time I wanted to strangle David for what he allowed.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. A lot. I was a little upset with the ending though and how rushed it felt. We have this long drawn out mentally draining story, a great story, but the end was wrapped up so quickly that I can't help but be little upset about that. Kat's ex-Dom is called in to help with some issues and I expected more out of that. I was beyond excited when he was called in too. In the end, this book is worth more than the 99 cents it's price at on Amazon. (less)

This is definitely a read that leans toward the dark-side and is not for the feint of heart. I am all for the brooding male Dom, but I will have to admit, this one was a little tough for me at times. On the other had, I really enjoyed the main H/h story line and how they prevailed in the most dire of circumstances.

I have just finished this intense book after not being able to put it down for the last 24 hours. Wow! All I can say is this was an extremely intense, emotional roller coaster ride to read. I really did enjoy it, even though at times the dysfunction in David's family turned my stomach. The loving relationship between David and Katlyn made up for the abusive parts with his father. Although, I would have to say that David and Kat did have what most would consider an unhealthy relationship. It was nice though, that they loved each other enough to rise above all of the abuse that David had been exposed to.
They were both students when they met and they enter into a relationship that ends up a Dom/sub relationship as well. They end up hiding their romance and eventually their marriage from David's parents as his dad is extremely abusive and David doesn't want him near Kat. Of course, down the road they do get found out and his father becomes a major trial that they both always have to be ten steps ahead of to try and keep things smoothly running. There is so much that goes on in this book that it must be read to truly enjoy the up and down ride that you get from reading it.
The only thing that some may find distracting is how each chapter ends up from two different time periods, so you are getting a story of the past and then the present with each chapter. I fell into the pattern really quick so it didn't bother me; but some may not like that. I found it kept me anticipating what was going to happen next at all times! I also fell in love with David when he gets help from Kat's old Dom, in order to make sure he treats her right in their Dom/sub dynamic. It was extremely humbling for him to do; but he did it for Kat's best interest and from then on he had my respect immediately. I would have liked to know more about Kat's life history as I got the feeling that there might have been a story there but the focus was on David's dysfunctional family, not hers. I am hoping that maybe the author will think to do another book based on Kat's history.
I recommend this book to anyone who is not turned off by an emotional read that at times can be disturbing. The love between both David and Kat was endearing and in my opinion made up for any troubling events that went on. I am glad that I chose to read this book and I will have my eye on this author for any future books she writes.(less)

I bought this book this afternoon and I read the reviews so I knew what I was getting into, I found myself around 90% done and thought, "I don't really care what happens". I'm completely ambivalent about this book. I realized that in the end I neither love or hate it, that I did not form any emotional attachment to these characters.

So if I ask myself why, I think its because I've read this theme before and it's been done better. Now I am not trying to insult the author here. Can I formulate a story arch, create characters and put those details to paper? Absolutely not. However, when I think of series like Rescue Me or a book like "Sweet Temptation" were the either the subject matter is similar or the BDSM element is more intense, Generational Sins just doesn't stand up.

I'm not new to this genre and maybe I've become a little jaded in what I deem "shocking" but when I try and envision myself in the same position as these characters, I just can't find all their actions plausible. I realize that this is fiction and it should be read with a "grain of salt" but the tragedy and enormity of their situation seems to be swept under the bed, so to speak, while the H/h are on top of it having sex. In fact it seemed that almost ever chapter ended with a sex scene and I found myself just skimming through them.

This is not to say that all their reactions didn't make sense to me because some did. Calling in the heroine's old Dom, her needing a session to help with the healing, the hero unable to provide that yet for her, his confidence in shatters. Yes that all made sense to me, but by that point I just didn't care. I was not invested in them so I was not invested in their future.

This is actually the longest review I have ever given and could go on further but I do not want to bore you any longer with this one person's opinion. I would say that if you are new to this theme or dominant and submissive personalities then maybe you should start here with this book. Just as the main hero becomes educated so can you and though this subject matter is a heavy one, in opinion it is not as emotionally intense as it could be.

Will I give this author another chance? Maybe. I guess my ambivalence speaks for itself in that response too. (less)

This book seems to have been compared to 50 Shades of Grey.

It was not and if 50 shades was your introduction to BDSM be prepared to read a very different take on in Generational Sins.

one word that this book left me: SPEECHLESS (okay another word: UNCOMFORTABLE)
i really wish i read more of the reviews so i knew that this book contained sexual violence, i only thought it was physical violence which i can handle. However, sexual violence was a whole new level for me which i found out i can't handle at all.

From getting a strange insight to a very different kind of abuse that David and his mother endured...I say different b/c it was just so detailed in some ways, and you could really get more of a feel of what it would be like if you grew up in that kind of environment, and didn't know differently, but felt strange anyways... The moment when he learned from Kat what the difference between an abusive relationship and a D/s relationship was....it was just so startling. The story ended up going in places that I just wasn't expecting. And I can honestly say that this is one of the first times I really understood what would make someone wish to be submissive....I mean, REALLY understand. I really appreciated that. It made me see the whole genre in a different light. Kat and David were just so perfect together. I was so glad they found each other. I knew the situation with Richard would come to a head, though not exactly how. It was heartbreaking. I think a normal book may have stopped there, but seeing David struggle as a Dom afterwards just gave a better glimpse into the characters...and the stuff with Cody. It was a perfect resolve.

In the end, I did find the switching perspectives and switching timelines confusing b/c unfortunately I could not just devour this book all at once like I normally would. Since it took me a few days to finish it between everything that's going on in my life, it just made it that much more difficult to get back into the book headspace...I would often have to go back a chapter to remind myself what had been happening in the past or present. So not good for those who don't have a lot of time to read and actually have to set a book down.(less)

This book had a hard start and it definitely didn't leave the reader in any doubt of what they were getting into. Not for the lighthearted or squeamish.
I also found the time lines hard to follow and got a bit lost at times.
Having said all that it did grab my attention and I wanted to know where it was heading, i even cheered at one point (you'll understand if you read it).

This book was not at all what I expected...it was much deeper. Ms. Blair did a fabulous job of contrasting the differences between a true BDSM lifestyle vs. abuse. Even a vanilla person like me was able to understand Kat's need for her Dom and how he grounded her. Kaytlin (Kat) Lake met David Paulson at Harvard when he was assigned to be her lab partner. They were both in pre-med. She was instantly attracted to David and he was to her however David viewed Kat differently than other woman. He recognized that she was intelligent, smart, interesting and sexy. He avoided her at all cost because he did not want to bring her into his dark world. David knew that he didn't treat woman the way they should be treated. He recognized that his desires were wrong and he didn't want that for Katlyn.

As time progressed David and Katlyn's friendship grew as well as their desire for one another. David did not want to be in a sexual relationship with Kat unless he was completely honest with her though, so he told her they needed to discuss his life style. When they decided to go away together for a weekend to discuss where they wanted their relationship to go, Katylin surprised David by telling him she was submissive and wanted a Dom/Sub relationship. David had no idea what BDSM was or what type of relationship Kat needed. All David knew was how to hurt a woman. How to beat her, and how to humiliate her. David was not taught by his father to be a loving partner or the give and take in a relationship so this was a new concept for him.

Under research, guidance and patience Kat and David's relationship flourish and they fall deeply in love. David is ashamed of his past and terrified that his father will discover he has a loving relationship with Kat. Richard (David's father) is a sadistic bastard and abuses his wife mentally, physically and sexually and when he discovers Kat and David are in a relationship he does everything he can to dominate his son and humiliate Kat. It also becomes clear that he is attracted to Kat and reading about some of the things he tries to do to Kat was very uncomfortable to me.

This book describes a lot of abuse and a lot if it was hard to read at times. It was a good book, but definitely not a light HEA read.(less)

Shelves: contemporary, bdsm, erotica, keeper

This book started off with a bang, letting me know right away that this author wasn't going to pull any punches. All through the first few lines, pages and chapters, I had the feeling that this would be a great book. I tried to hold back my expectations, but it just didn't work. Thank goodness this book turned out to be amazing.

Shelves: smut-romance, after-fifty-shades

I wish I could give more stars, but I just didn't really enjoy this book for a few reasons. First of all, I found the shifting of time and narrator to be so confusing. If it was one or the other I would have been ok, but to follow past or present, her or him was too much.

The best part about this book was Cody, Kat's former cowboy Dom and I might read that prequel.
Kat is a wonderful girl and an exemplary submissive and David is right: he does not deserve her because in the end he lets other people run his life which is very much the opposite of what is in control. He is not the kind of Dom I like to read about.

David is IMO TSTL. I know that is really harsh but OMG everything is so psychoanalyzed and blamed on his childhood. At which point does he become a man, an adult and take responsibility for his actions? I'm over that crap: well you know, it's cause his dad was a psycho and abused his mom. Grow up and take control! And here is the bottom line, its shouldn't have been a D/s novel because David has no control of anything. If it were just contemporary I'd have liked it better.

It's a 4.5 stars. So so so good! Not 5 stars because of the ending. :)

The author used a very unique way of writing. Each chapter had a different POV (the male and female leads) and it also switched between present and past. It usually ended the chapters with something major and we had to wait 2 chapters to know what would be next. I really enjoyed the back and forth.

I've never wrote a review quite like this one, but I have so many clips and notes from this book that I will write my review using...more
