Bill Phillips is a great guy. I only say that because this book changed me. Bill Phillips' insightful, friendly, informative style is welcoming. He sees beyond the need to "get thin" and identifies (correctly) how focusing so much on your weightloss can lead to self-absorbtion. His Journal even gives daily tips to do random acts of kindness to redirect your focus. Beyond this, the workouts are really quick, very challenging, and require planning. The meals are really good (mostly...more
We have all read a smattering of self-help books over the years that have briefly inspired moderation of our behavior for hopefully a more positive life style. This book is one from that category in my library. Body for Life is about modifying diet, exercising, and lifting weights in order to slim down and sculpt your body in a 12 week program. It is filled with many testimonials and photos of successful people who changed their lives through this regime. I have held on to this book in hopes of ...more
Great eating and exercise plan. Initially when I started I lost 35 pounds and in the words of a co-worker I looked "svelte" (Woot for me!) It takes a bit to get in the groove, but of all the diets and work-outs I have read, none are as well supported medically, nutritionally, or by gyms as this one. Granted it's not wheat, milk, sugar and animal meat free; which I have read books stating why all those things are terrible. Additionally you can have one whole day to eat ANYTHING you ...more
Finding this book while working at Waldenbooks was one of the tipping points of my life. After engaging with this text, I felt empowered and aware of a vastly different bodily concept than what I had grown into. This was the springboard book for my continuing exploration of my health.
I did this program before I got sick in 2005. Not only were the changes in my body incredible, but after I got out of the hospital the doctor said that it might have saved my life. Having all that additional muscle kept my body from consuming my vital organs when things were at their worst.
Anyway, I've been suffering from some miserable body image issue (mostly work related...it IS a looks-driven industry), and it's time to start again.

This is my favorite pop-culture diet book. Mostly I like what it did for 'fad diet' books. It is a good basic guide on living a healthy life, for the general population... HOWEVER.... realize this book is out to make money. Take the advice of eating 6 meals a day... mix up the workout. You don't have to follow his diet and his routine to have a fantastic body. The reality is, most of my clients who have read this book, believe you HAVE to follow it perfectly. If you are that motivated, an...more

This book was not at all what I had expected. I read it on the recommendation of the Winn Brothers, and was impressed with the motivational exercises and positive psychology in the first half of the book. I found the philosophies about tackling "feared things first" and seeking out "the right amount of positive pressure" very refreshing. The second half was all about balancing weight training with aerobic exercise, and eating 6 small, high quality meals every day. I have ...more
Ugh. I'm always wary of books with chapters that have trademark symbols. This book reads like an infomercial. It spends more time making promises of amazing results than it does actually saying anything of substance. It hints of a complete transformation into a thin, muscle-bound new you within 12 weeks. It's lined with before-and-after photos, which hints at what's possible with the program, but he never actually claims that they were achieved in 12 weeks. In fact, nothing was specifically clai...more
Good book. It challenged some of my life-long thoughts on fitness and exercise, but I think it's been a good change. Phillips is very encouraging. Its so nice to have a plan really laid out for me. Many books cover some aspects of fitness, but this one is specific in all aspects. I like his plan - it's do-able and practical. He has good reference pages in the back for exercises and journals. I keep renewing it from the library because I constantly refer to it and hate to let it out of my h...more
You know this is great for a lot of people. I read it thinking I would do it and kind of am...only modified. I got some great ideas for the workouts and am following this. I found it very challenging to keep up with the nutrition though. I think I am a pretty healthy eater as is... I eat a LOT of fruit and veggies normally and this plan restricts them. I have a hard time with protein 6 times a day as well. Esp since beans are a major source of protein for me- but he considers them a starch. But...more

I wasn't trying to transform my body the way most people are when buying this book, but the health and nutrition advice is invaluable. There are even a few pages in the book made up of columns divided into healthy carbs, vegetables/fruits, and proteins, and how many of each to take in to be perfectly balanced. You just choose one from each column and you have a healthy meal! This is perfect for anyone who wants to make an overall change, and not just focus on problem areas (which doesn't work an...more
I've done this program before and really like it. It's solid. I'm returning to the workplace and have decided to take up these workouts again because they never last more than 52 minutes. And winter is upon us, so I can handle 25 minutes up running in the cold.
Foodwise, I think it's lacking in plant-based foods and whole grains, but that's easy to adjust. Also, it's hard to eat 6 times a day, so I adjust it to 5 times. Calories in, calories out. It's simple math. Now, if only my t...more

The best part of this book is on page 103 "Harness the Power of Positive Pressure". "Most people in America have been conditioned to believe they should 'coast' through life...This is not good...deep down inside, you want pressure..you need pressure to feel excited and passionate about life...It's through pressure or 'stress' that we evolve-that we grow." He of course is talking about putting stress on your muscles so that they will grow, but he also says that this can appl...more
Read and reading again. This is the only weight loss plan I have ever been successful with. The eating is healthy, smaller portions 6 times a day, and the exercise is TOTALLY manageable. Plus you get a free day once a week for date night, or whatever the occasion may be, so you don't have to feel guilty or like you have to "start over" the next day.

I read this last week while I was stuck under a napping Sarah solely because it was on my parents' shelf near me. And I wouldn't recommend it. While I'm sure it's worked for many people, the advice on exercise seemed too constrained to something you have to do in a gym most of the time, and not something you can just go out and do with your family as a group activity. And the dietary advice was pretty poor - not nearly enough reliance on fruits & vegetables, and way too much reliance on suppl...more
This is what got me started back into lifting weights again after an 18 year hiatus. I think the program as written -- little food -- especially fat and crazy volumes of exercise could be too much. Of course I did the program with much more fat and traded the intervals for steady state aerobic. And as a newbie (revirginated?) enjoyed spectacular results. The motivation in the plan is great. And the whole idea of making and keeping a 12 week promise to yourself is unbelievably empowering.
It's really a very good book. No cutting out entire food groups and pretending it's "healthy". I did this a couple years ago when I had time to keep up with it. It's a great plan and program.
The book has a lot of real life stories. I though they ere were obnoxious and a waste of pages, but to each his own. Some people might get fired up to hear how well this works for other people.
It's an easy and realistic LIFESTYLE CHANGE. Not a fad or temporary solution.

Sound, simple advice for those wishing to change their lifestyle to one that embraces a healthier lifestyle of exercise, food choices, and time management. Able to be adapted to any level of committment - from "jumping of the deep end" for fabulous results to "staying in the shallow end" for more temperate results. Regardless, the lessons learned and the patterns adopted will be advantageous to anyone wishing to improve their health and lifestyle.
I don't want to have to do any major repairs or trade the body I have. I read through this and it is like many of the other get well books - bottom line is that you have to want to get it done. I know enough to do my own weight training as well as cooking (have several good cook books for proper diet), but I still have to do it myself. I am goal oriented, so his suggestions on setting goals was effective. Also, it is lifestyle change stuff - not quick fixes.
This book helped change my life. There are some similarities in attitudes, as well as strategies for changing habits, as found in books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Plus the instructions for eating right & exercising were clear, effective, and healthy. This is a relatively strict type of plan, but still doable for a life change (rather than a diet).
This is the book that got me hooked on fitness. Its great especially if you have never worked out before in your life because step by step it walks you through the how to of everything. It will give you the system of what works, which body parts to work out and how many reps its like having your own personal trainer there but for a fraction of the cost. This book is a good stepping stone on the road of fitness.
This book was very eye opening to me on my nutrition downfalls that I have been doing my whole life. The only thing I couldn't do faithfully was six meals a day. I only did 4. I also didn't do the protein bars or powder, for the fact, if I am going to do this "for life" will I really be able to afford the bars and powder for the rest of my life? That's why I didn't do it.
I thought this book was ok. I read it after my augmentation because I really wanted to change the way I looked and felt about myself. Jeremy read it first, and liked it. He teaches weight-lifting 101, a healthy eating plan, and aerobics. Very simple, but very motivating. Quick, easy read that is sure to energize the most slothful person to move their body.
We're applying the principles and seeing great results. He's clear and concise in his explanations, and he shows how you can be consistent even though we aren't perfect. I have friends who took his challenge on www.transformation.com that has changed their lives. Email me if you are curious whose name to search to see their before and after pictures. Amazing!
Bill Phillips is a quack. He's an obviously sterroided beef neck, and the book is an unabashed plea to buy his suppliments. I like, however, what he has to say about grazing and a few more things. I did put on a bit more muscle mass during the 6 or so months that I followed Phillips regime strictly. But in the end, its largely a fad and a money makeing scheme.

This has to be the one of the best resources of physical fitness I have come across in my entire life. Bill explains all the ABC's of getting fit and explains all the Nitty gritty nutritional and meal plans than one needs to keep a lean body. I must say this is an awesomely Inspiring book, for anybody who Intends and looks forward to a lean healthy body.
This book helped me to better understand exercise and diet. It is very motivational and is filled with examples of people who were able to make dramatic changes in their health, fitness, and appearance by following a 12 week program. Every once in a while I go back to it for reference and re- commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
While I never intend to go through a transformation that makes me super-buff, I did enjoy the basics of this plan and intend to try the challenge out one of these days. The plan is simple... eat a balance of carbs and protien (plus veggies, of course) and then rotate your work outs, doing strength training one day and cardio the next.
Read this a few years ago. Given what I've learned since then, I want to re-read it. there's a good chance the rating will change given that. A lot of the recommendations now seem a bit off, but maybe I'm just remembering them wrong. I never implemented the program, so its not like I have too much personal experience with it.
The first time I got fit, I read this book, followed his advice (low fat, balance carve and protein, alternate aerobic and weight training - the basics), and lost 35 lbs in four months. There's a lot of rah-rah pep talk and inspiring stories and pictures which are sort of infomercially but I liked them and it worked for me.
