Oddly to some, this still stands as my favorite Roald Dahl book. It's hard for me to pinpoint why, since it's my opinion and I hate examining my opinions too closely, but to take a swing at it:
It's one of the least zany of Dahl's books, which ultimately gives it staying power. With many of his other works, you get caught up in the wacky characters, situations, and goings ons and it's hard to take them as seriously once you get a little bit older and gain a little bit of sophistication.

The movie with Jeremy Irons, his wife, Sinead Cusack, his son and his father-in-law is just as good as the book! Great for all ages.

YA. I got this book as a reward for participating in my library's summer reading program back when I was still short enough to read for cash and prizes. Ironically enough, I never read it. Sab instructed me to do so, and I finally dug it out and gave it a go.
This is a book about Danny and the very best father a boy could ever want. There's something a tad creepy about a boy who idolizes his father this much, but I'm not a boy living alone with his father in the English countryside i...more

In either year 2 or 3 (actually I think it happened both years) my class had a substitute teacher at the end of the year. She was amazing and I adored her. She would always read us stories which of course I loved. As well as this book she also read us Roald Dahls The Witches and The BFG.
Anyways I was totally enthralled with this story and the day she finished it I went home and was RAVING about it and either my brother or mother told me we had a copy of it somewhere that belonged to ...more

My personal favorite RD book. I wanted to live in a cozy gypsy caravan like Danny.

In Wyoming where I grew up, poaching was one of the worst crimes. So when our teacher had us read a book about a young boy and his father who make a habit of it...well I was a little shocked. I was more shocked though at how much I liked Danny and his father.
Danny is such a brave, ingenious, and warm figure, you can't help but cheer for him. He certainly my most favorite child character in any of Roald Dahl's books.

Danny is a kid who lives in an old caravan with his dad and helps out at his father's mechanic station here and there. They have a great relationship, which is probably my favorite thing about this book, and Danny would rather spend time with his dad than anyone else in the world. One day, Danny discovers his father's deep, dark secret, and the next thing you know, they're off together, hatching a plan to get back at the mean and stingy Mr. Hazell, who has a number of pheasants on his land (I ...more

A bit far-fetched. I'd passed by this book many times before and it never caught my interest on account of it being long and the title not being more discriptive. You could be the champion of the world through many things; doing something exceedingly difficult or impossible, inventing something that could cure world hunger, or something else equally huge. Drugging two hundred pheasants is not exactly what I had in mind. All that crap Danny's father talks about poaching being an art. Who in their...more

I read this chapter book to my son recently, and he liked it a lot. It was actually my copy from when I was young; I loved most of the Roald Dahl books, but don't now remember actually having read this one. With my son, I'd already read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. I am waiting a bit for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. This book is not as fantastical as these other titles—everything that happens is solidly within the realm of the plausib...more

An almost surprisingly cheerful outing with a moral that you must suspect was dear to Dahl's heart. It would be nice to think that there are a few "sparkier" parents thanks to this book. (Everyone who was ever a child must long for moments like the one when Danny's father almost blows the whole adventure because of Danny's mistreatment at school, and every former little boy must be jealous of adventures like the one with the fire balloon.)
That said, the work still contains ...more

When you grow up
And have children of your own
Do please remember
Something important
A stodgy parent is no fun at all
What a child wants
And deserves
Is a parent who is
SPARKY
…and with that li’l post-script, Roald Dahl sums up the essence of ‘Danny the Champion of the World'.

This was my third time reading this. The first was when my 1st grade teacher read it to our class. The second time was to my daughters, and now I just finished reading it to my boys. It is one of my favorite all time children's books, and my favorite Roald Dahl story. The boys were mezmorized by it. Granted, it involves a bit of mischief, and I wouldn't want my kids to emulate that aspect of it. What I love is the fantastic relationship Danny has with his father; and the way his father enj...more

This is my favorite Roald Dahl book of all time. I've read and re-read 18 billion times. It is funny, however, how my reading of it changes now that I'm a parent. I sort of cringe at the thought of reading Roald Dahl out loud with my kids due to the pure evil and meanness of some of the characters. At the same time, his writing is some of the most memorable and vivid to me of things I read as a child.

Nine-year-old Danny has the world’s most wonderful father, which is a good thing because he doesn’t have a mother. He and his father live in an old gypsy caravan outside a small town, and run a gas station. By the time he’s seven, Danny can take apart and put together a small motor, all on his own. But Danny’s real adventures start on the night he discovers his father’s deepest, darkest secret—-and decides to help out.

This was my favorite Roald Dahl book as a kid, which I think is rather funny considering it's the only one that has absolutely no magic in it. But hey, it's a story about a gypsy boy who invents the best way ever to steal pheasants from rich people. How can you not love it?

I will admit, it's been years since I've read this, before all my critical reading skills were honed and my child/adolescent literature study ensued. But my memories of this book are of relishing it.
Surprisingly ordinary as far as Roald Dahl goes. No giant peaches. No oompa loompas. Just a regular old kid living with his regular old dad working at a regular old gas station. The regularness of it is much of its charm. And you love these regular people, and want nothing more than...more

Ok, the plot of this book is really, really bizarre. I guess today we'd call it "high concept." I mean, a widespread conspiracy to drug a giant flock of pheasants? WTF? Still, I loved it when I was a kid.
