I have been waiting quite a while to get my hands on this one so I could read the Christine Feehan entry. I wasn't going to bother, but since it was the introduction to both the De La Cruz brothers and the Jaguar people, I thought I should. Of course, as always, I whine that anthology entries are just not long enough or detailed enough to give you developed characters or storylines, but this one does quite well.

Of course, as always, I whine that anthology entries are just not long enough or detailed enough to give you developed characters or storylines, but this one does quite well.

Riordan is the youngest brother of five powerful, ancient Carpathian hunters. Sent by their prince centuries ago into what is now known as Brazil to hunt the undead, they have survived their loss of color and emotion by focusing on their duty to their people and their remembered love of each other. Juliette is a Jaguar shifter - part of a nearly extinct race where a small renegade band of the males capture and rape their females in the hopes of impregnating them. Men are not creatures to be trusted in Juliette's world. Juliette, her younger sister Jasmine, and her cousin Solange live mostly on their own, after the deaths of their mothers at the hands of the males. But when Juliette and Jasmine attempt a lab break and enter in the jungle in order to free endangered animals from testing, Juliette finds something she never could have expected...a chained and near death man. And that man, Riordan, also finds what he never expected - his lifemate.

I was glad I got to go back and get the origins of the De La Cruz brothers, as brief as it was. It was a good introduction to their part in the Carpathian series. I, of course, was more interested in the elusize Zacharias, who to this point has yet to be "seen", but still has quite the presence. Riordan and Juliette make a good couple, and enough action is packed into this story to make it worth while. You can tell that both Solange and Jasmine will play a role somewhere down the line, especially Solange. She is a bit of an intriguing character, a warrior in her own right, and her story should be a good one. All in all, not a bad addition to the series.

I decided I wanted to give Angela Knight a shot, and since this anthology contained the first in the Mageverse series, it seemed like a good place to start. I didn't expect to like something that seemed as out there as Arthur's Knights of the Round table as Vampire saviors of mankind, but I did. While my usual gripe about not being able to get into the short stories still applies, it was enough to make me interested in checking out the rest of the series.

Two out of four isn't bad, but it could be better.
Christine Feehan's Dark Hunger is the usual Dark Series book. Hot and sexy - and a great introduction to the stories of the five De La Cruz brothers.
Maggie Shayne disappointed me - her story didn't have the right vibe.
Emma Holly's storytelling and plot improved from the novella in Fantasy. At least it made me laugh.
Seduction's Gift by Angela Knight made me lift my eyebrows and say "Huh?!" at first - but then - wow! And let me repeat that: wo...more

I'd heard mentions of Feehan as one of the authors who really boosted the visibility of paranormal romance. I was thoroughly unconvinced by her story. Lots of "Males are not to be trusted! But it's okay to use 'em for sex. But you're special, I want you and trust you" from the female shapeshifter, and "Don't do dangerous things while I'm trapped underground during the day! I found the ‘Magae, Magus, Mageverse, etc’ confusing and unnecessary. The history of the Mageverse was too complex for this one story and not explained well. This story is about Grace Morgan, Lancelot De Luc and their Mageverse. The Mageverse is another universe to the Magae and Magus.

Grace Morgan is a Deputy Sheriff with the Tayanita County Sheriff’s Department. She is a sexy, strong woman, with a secret. Grace is a latent, which means she has the ability to become a Magae if given the gift. She is also the granddaughter to Morgana Le Fey, a powerful Magae. Magae are the females of their species and witches. They control energy and produce an abundance of blood, so they can feed the Magus.

Lancelot is a Magus, a vampire male of their species who can shape shift, and is the legendary Knight of the Round Table. Magus crave sex and blood from Magae, who in turn find their scent just as stimulating.
The Council of the Round Table decide who is chosen to make the change from latent to Magae/Magus and a Magus/Magae of the opposite sex administers the gift. The Gift is given through sex, with a Magus/Magae of the opposite sex. Three times the charm for the gift to ‘kick in’ and is initiated through orgasm. You’d think this would be a really bad porn or erotica novel, but it’s a paranormal romance.

Morgana decides that Grave must be turned and sends her best ‘steed’ to do the job. This is of course Lancelot. Lancelot and Grace have a history together. She lived in the Mageverse when she was a teenager and worshipped Lance. He enjoyed her company but saw her only as a child. He taught her to sword fight to keep her mind off her dying mother. Clarice was a crazy Magae who should not have been turned. She attacked Grace because she had a vision that Lance would one day fall in love with Grace. Lance arrived in time to snap her neck and save Grace. Back to present day, Lance tells her he’s come to change her, but she doesn’t want the gift. It’s difficult for a latent to turn down a Magus/Magae and even more difficult for Grave since she’s loved him since she was a teenager. She decides that she has to have sex with him three times to make the change, so she throws caution to the wind and they have sex once. Later, they sword fight and have sex one more time. Lancelot has fallen for Grave and asks Morgana to approve their marriage. She claims she has other plans for Grace and will not permit it. Grace begins having visions and sees through the eyes of a murderer. In order to stop the murderer, she has sex with Lance to initiate the change and save the girl. Lance and Grace arrive in time to stop the murder, but Lance is shot. To heal himself, he shifts into a wolf (surprise, surprise – not) and when the murder tries to attack Grace, he attacks. Grace is still linked to the murderer and is also dying. Lance truebonds with Grace, which means they can read each other’s thoughts, minds, past and present. He shows her how to disconnect from the murderer in time before the murderer dies. She then wipes the mind of the victim and replaces the memory with something more PG than X-Rate Sci-Fi. Since they are now truebonded without the approval of the council, they seek out Morgana in hopes of forgiveness. Morgana was thrilled and planned this from the beginning. The End.

Dark Hunger (Carpathians - Dark series, book 14) by Christine Feehan

Witnessing the men take more wild animals into the new research building, Juliette Sangria and her sister Jasmine needed to save the animals before they were tortured, finding not only animals but a man, nearly broke her heart. Binding themselves together meant one big family.
(****4) Book 14 ….. Short stories are so difficult, it always feels so rushed and incomplete. I like the jaguar species and the connection they make to the Carpathians, Juliette’s simple acceptance of was good but Riordan’s compassion for Jasmine’s situation is what made him the best part of this story. Large cast of characters (brothers Zacarias, Manolito, Nicolas and Rafael as well as sister Jasmine and cousin Solange) for a short story, hopefully we will see more of all of them as the series progresses.

Awaiting Moonrise by Maggie Shayne
Taking a research trip to New Orleans, Professor Jenny Rose from Dunkirk University was wanting to use her expertise as a cryptozoologist to prove that werewolves don’t exist, it is just a previously not discovered species of animals. After finding what could be the animal she has been looking for and being scratched by it, she met the local Doctor. The attraction Dr. Samuel La Roque had to Jenny was instantaneous and unavoidable. He had his secrets and she was going to find them, and then what would they both do?
(****4) Under 100 pages, this is a great story with some wonderful characters. It did feel like it was lacking because of how short it was. Their encounters are intense, but the reaction seemed more than what was warranted, almost like we only saw part of it. I liked the ‘bad guy’ not really wanting to track the werewolf for any normal reasons. The addition of the Voudon priestess, Mamma Louisa, gave a bit of flavor to the story and a great ending.

The Night Owl (Midnight series, book 1) by Emma Holly
Owning the bakery was all Mariann O’Faolain had really ever wanted to do. Finally after the ex-husband and the ex-partner were out of her life, she could start over and do what made her happy. Needing a connection to the people around him, Bastien Luce and his ‘cousin’ Emile started renovating the Night Owl Inn. Finding a different kind of connection with Mariann might be more difficult for him, but he knew he would find a way to make it forever.
(****4) New author for me, one that I really enjoyed and will look for more from. Little bit of a different take on a common storyline. The back story of the characters was well written and easy to follow, the characters themselves were wonderful. Bastien’s shyness was endearing from the beginning and I could have read more about him and Emile’s strange view of life made for an easy camaraderie between the two… and then all three of them. As always, I like learning a new words (one at a time), upyr - from Hungarian and Slavonic folklore.

Seduction’s Gift (Mageverse, book 1) by Angela Knight
Sheriff Officer Grace Morgan liked her job, she liked protecting and helping people even if she already knew that there was more to life than just the earthy universe. Catching a speeding car, Lance (Lancelot du Lac) looked up at her and her heart dropped, she thought she had squashed that crush long ago but seeing him now made her unsure of everything but the need to not give in to her desires for him. Knowing that he had the power of the Mageverse behind him, Grace fought her growing needs as long as she could.
(***3) Different, interesting, strange - really enjoyed the concept of the story (King Arthur, his round table, and Merlin) and the characters (Lancelot, Grace and Morgana) were fabulous. Too rushed for my taste (maybe because it is a short story), felt as if the story was an excuse for the sex scenes, I would have rather had a story I didn’t care about and have the sex be the story or invest more into the great story and let the sex just enhance it. This story could have been the best story of the book, it could have been a really great story, unfortunately it was crammed into about 100 pages and lost so much. I would be interested in reading this author again (full length book please). (less)

Cat shifter girl raids lab to save the creatures & saves a Carpathian man who decides right away she's his lifemate.

I am sorry, but this one was really stupid. Her cat people are the DUMBEST characters she has, and mix it with a vampire who uses the type of english he does. It was just the worst story frm her I've read. Cats are so sexual you know 'cause they have to rub up all over you. That's how you can tell! Whatever!

I'd give Hot Blooded 3.5 stars overall.
Dark Hunger by Christine Feehan was alright. Better then Dark Prince, the first book in the series, but her writing still kind-of annoys me. That and I don't particularily like her characters, although this one was much better - stonger and less idiotic then the one in the first book. My favourite part of this story is that it was set in the South American rainforest instead of Europe or North America.

Ok I initially wanted to read this so I ccould read the Carpathian novella from Christine Feehan "Dark Hunger" and it was fairly typical of all the others in the series with the exception that Juliette (the woman who become converted) actually welcomes the change. I actually enjoyed this collection of novellas. Christine Feehan's "Dark Hunger" was okay, as usual, but I was pleasantly surprised with the rest of the stories. I adored the last one by Angela Knight, where she wove in the mythology of King Arthur's court with vampires and witches. Of the grouping here, the last was definitely my favorite. The second to last novella was by Emma Holly, and thought it was a great story as well.

This is going back to the charity shop, I'm afraid. I've read at least one book from all of the authors who have contributed in this anthology so I thought that I was in for an enjoyable read. I don't know if I'm just in one of my slumps but I did not enjoy this one bit.

The only story that I was able to finish was the last one, 'Seduction's Gift' by Angela Knight. The premise was interesting but a few chapters in, I was already losing interest but I was determined to at least finish one story.

I always find it hard to rate an anthology, because inevitably I really like some and really don't like others, and that holds true here. On the strength of Christine Feehan's Dark Hunger, tho, I give this an overall 3.5*

Maggie Shayne's Upyr story gets a weak 3*

I just read the Angela Knight story,Seduction's Gift, in preparation for my cyber reader buddies doing a group read of other books in the series. I don't think I can hack it. The story seemed to be built with standard characters (angry modern woman who doesn't want to get sucked into the paranormal world; hot, irresistible man who wants to fuck her for her own good).

Four good reads. Feehan's "Dark Hunger" adds another piece to the Carpathian story with a interesting story line about the Jaguar shapeshifters "Juliette" and how that specieis relate to the Carpathians. "Awaiting Moonrise" by Maggie Shayne (who I have not read much of) was about the Bayou where professor Jenny Rose is doing research on the possibility of another species, and of course, she finds a werewolf and falls in love. Grace, who lived on their plane from the age of 15 to 20, who had a crush on Lancelot, who begged them to gift her mother, who wanted it but did not have the strength of character to be a Mageverse so they refused, and who was attacked by Lancelot's latest gifted who could not handle it so went crazy... 8 years later, she is a darn good policewoman... and wants nothing to do with the gift.

but she is very attracted to Lancelot, and she succumbs to him twice... and to save a woman who has been kidnapped by a madman that she is psychically tied to, she goes to Lancelot so that she can be gifted and save the woman... and in their efforts to save the woman, they become truebonded... only one for each other, with access to each other's minds/thoughts... Morganna's true goal...

Juliette Sangria – jaguar shifter – mother and aunt died at hands of evil jaguar men (influenced by vampire?) to imprison and rape the female jaguar in expectation of jaguar offspring. A bit rough at first, Riordan strikes and takes her blood to regain some strength, he destroys the compound, and contacts his brothers to tell him of the poison he was given to weaken him. But he recognizes Juliette as his mate, and takes her limp body to safety, a hidden hot springs/cave in the jungle. The Night Owl – Emma Holly
Vermont, Marianna O’Faolain, Bastien Luce (upyr – race of shape-shifting immortal beings, part wolf, part blood-drinker. I’d like to read more of the upyr… part werewolf, part vampire… an interesting different mythology of such.
Marianna is a baker with the treasured recipes of her grandfather, and baking means love to her… Bastien is a potential clan leader (though an error in his ‘youth’ makes him reluctant) who buys the inn of which Marianna’s bakery is rented from… and he and his best friend are making tremendous improvements, and have begun underground caverns homes to be protected from the sun… and he is tongue tied around Marianna, whom he feels great passion for… He approaches her as his wolf, accepting a pet and a piece of toast from her… then he finally talks with her, makes a date, and they have a wonderful time. Later that night, she panics about her grandfather’s recipes and returns to the bakery to retrieve them, and Bastien & friend are watching over her as she is riding her bicycle home, and her ‘arch-enemy’ /ex-business partner who stole some of her grandfather’s recipes, hits her with her car and steals the rest of the recipe book. She has hit her head, and is dying, and Bastien, with the push of his friend (who can see how deeply he cares for her) encourages him to turn her and save her life. She has a bit of trouble adjusting (like who wouldn’t) – and interestingly, her optimal weight is 7 pounds more and curvier than what she was before – especially with not being able to taste and test her creations. And strong, autocratic Bastien is very sensitive and helpful to her needs – ahhh…
And his friend goes to the arch nemesis and bespells her with a truth spell – so she goes on the air, and tells all about where the recipes came from, and how she feels about the producers, the audience, etc.

I bought this book strictly for the Feehan story, not planning on reading the other three. But after Dark Hunger, decided what the heck? I'd give it a try. I surprised myself by enjoying all four stories practically equally.

I'm reading them all in order, so I guess I'll find out.

Awaiting Moonrise takes place in Louisiana. This is my first book involving a loup-garou (sounds much more respectful than 'werewolf'!). I was touched by the fact that Jenny accepted her werewolf doctor, Samuel, for all he was and even appreciated him. Of course it helped that she was a well-respected cryptozoologist. I was also glad that the author included legend and folklore. It certainly set the tone. Nice story.

The Night Owl is a story about a vampire (excuse me, 'upyr'!), Bastien, who was expelled to the states because of his strength and innate leadership abilities. His former clan was threatened by his power. So he buys an old building to turn into a Gothic hotel and calls it The Night Owl. Attached to the hotel is a bakery owned by the heroine of the story, Mariann. They, of course, become attracted to each other and, through various twists and turns, have their HEA.

Seduction's Gift really had me confused in the beginning. I felt like I spent most of the story playing catch-up. But it was worth it. And I loved the different take on the Camelot characters. I enjoyed the story. But before I read any further books in the series, I must determine how to pronounce the various forms of the word 'Magi'. I didn't know it had so many variations! I was moved by Lancelot's devotion to Grace and willingness to accept any punishment for his commitment to her. And they certainly have chemistry! I was a little uncomfortable with the lack of familial feelings among this group. You just have to accept it and move on. It's who they are. I will probably try to find more of Angela Knight's books in this series.

I didn't want to read all of the stories from this book. I have a bad habit of starting a series from the middle or end then working my way back. I only read Angelia Knights Mageverse #1, as I already have read everything else from the series to date.

To be honest, one of the only reasons I read this book was for Feehan's story. As a fan of her Carpathian Series, I could not resist. With that out the way, Hot Blooded includes four short stories of paranormal romance. Of the four, my favorite was Feehan's short story (ofcourse), w/ Angela Knight's story coming in second. Three of the four stories are tied to series -- none of which I actually read. But, I may start them now that I've read this book!

I orginally picked this book up for the Angela Knight short story, but enjoyed the Christine Feehan one as well. The other 2 stories were 'meh', which lead me to give it only 3/5 stars.

The Feehan story is part of her Carpathian series, and is one that I've not read before. I vaguely remember reading one or two of the first of the series, so this short story was a pleasant refresher that urges me to go back to the beginning and start over with #1.

I bought Hot Blooded because I love Christine Feehan and Angela Knight, but I was terribly disappointed. I have been a paranormal romance junkie for years, I love strong characters, a great plot, plenty of adventure/horror, and erotica in my novels, but this is literally the worst book I've ever read.

Have knocked off the story I got this book for - Mageverse #1 - just to discover 6 pages missing at a critical point. Library books, eh? May well look at the other 3 stories over the next few weeks, but not exactly rushing to do so: I've feeling a bit of paranormal romance satiation after the excellent Must Love Hellhounds collection.

I cant rate Christine Feehan highly enough in ALL her books i have read which includes the Dark Series and The Ghostwalkers. Her talent for drawing you into the story is unbelievable! Would give more than 5 stars if i could!!!!! I have to say that i enjoyed all the books in this anthology
