The Book Report: Fourth in the Guido Guerrieri series of Italian legal thrillers, this entry is not a procedural but a traditional private eye investigation. It is a true noir, set in Bari...a weirdly San Franciscan venue, and my how well its noirness is invoked.

Counselor Guerrieri, as the new translator calls him, is mid-flow on one of his usual if not terribly interesting workdays. He's had to move his law practice into new, American-ish offices because his former secretary has passed the bar and is now of counsel, and the adopted Peruvian daughter of some old friends is in there with him too. Plus a new secretary inherited from a deceased colleague. What was once snug became claustrophobic. So now Guido looks around himself, hating the slickness and the newness, and feeling all at sixes and sevens with his solitary life.

In walks an old colleague, with the zombified parents of a six-months-missing daughter. The Carabinieri, sort of a cross between the sheriffs and the FBI, must have missed something, Guido; you find people, you solve cases, Guido; please, my clients will pay you just to look over the file, Guido, please help them, look at them, they can't function, help them!

What co-dependent with a savior complex could resist such a plea? Not our Guido! No matter that he's a lawyer, not a PI, and no matter that the cop min charge of the case when it was opened is a friend of his, a man he respects, whose investigatory talents he trusts. Someone Needs Guido! And we're off, talking to the friends of vanished Manuela already interviewed, chasing down leads that have grown cold, being seduced and boinked by gorgeous, curvaceous young suspects...all the noir PI tropes are here, and well deployed.

In the end, Counselor Guerrieri solves the tawdry case, as everyone knows he will, but the fact that a Sherlock Holmes short story is the trigger that presents the solution to him is a touch I treasure. That the crime is solved and the guilty punished is a reason to read any fictional mystery, since real life seldom offers such order and satisfaction.

My Review: But then there are the dissatisfactions of this outing in the series. It is not a legal procedural thriller. There is no doubt in the mind of anyone at all that the vanished girl is dead from the get-go, so the suspense is only moderate. I am no fan of the sudden sea change in the direction, for all that I like noirs. I want my legal procedural fix!

And then there's the weirdness of the book being published by Rizzoli. ..!!.. That's right, the pretty-pictures people! It's a nice job, and it's not like they printed the book on 100-pound glossy paper and used overly ornamental dingbats on every page, but it's...unsettling...sort of like finding gay porn in your mama's nightstand. Error 404: File Not Found.

So why give it 4.5 stars, if I hate it? I don't hate it, it's quite well written, if translated in a way I'm less happy with that the previous two-book translator [[Howard Curtis]] did the job. But the main reason I've rated the book so highly is the portrayal of the bereaved parents.

I've mentioned before that I lost my son when he was two. No worse thing can happen to a person. Manuela's father, heartbreakingly, goes to the train station and waits for his girl to get off the train. He walks up and down the train searching the faces of the arriving passengers, praying hoping believing that one will be his daughter. Guido, who witnesses this, is so powerfully moved that one can feel him suffering for, suffering with, truly having compassion for the mad father. This brief, perfectly imagined, beautifully underplayed scene is worth four stars on its own.

The thing that I like best about this book is the richness of what we learn about Guido Guerrieri, who has been a very engaging character from the very first book. The story, the investigation he undertakes to find out what happened to a young university student who disappeared on her way home from a country weekend, is almost incidental.

His law practise has prospered - he has Maria, his former secretary, now an attorney, and another young attorney assisting him in his work. A new larger office....more

Una piccola delusione quest'ultimo di Carofiglio e fonte anche di una certa irritazione per trattamento superficiale di certe tematiche.

La trama del giallo é stiracchiata e banale, il tutto servito in salsa di ricicloclichésdelgenere, che hanno sapore di avanzi della settimana prima, su un letto di personaggi con relative stravaganze e particolarità che nella vita di un uomo qualunque al massimo gli capita di conoscerne un paio, se gli va bene o male fate voi, di tipi del genere: la solita amica, ex-cliente dell'avvocato, puttana redenta e amante e esperta di cinema che mette su il bar (in culo al mondo, in piena zona industriale e naturalmente per gay, con cuoco sublime ancorché tedesco, la signora inoltre é possidente di cane Corso ex-combattente in lotte fra cani, però anche lui redento da esperta cani criminali - e da cinofila da più di 30anni vi garantisco che per un cane criminale chiamiamolo così la rieducazione é lunghissima, difficilissima e mai e poi mai si arrivano ai risultati qui raccontati, tranne in rarissimi casi e di cani non troppo a lungo traumatizzati da una vita infame -, la giovincella che irretisce il Gi-Gi bella ma avariata dentro, clienti che continuano a parlargli delle loro prestazioni sessuali o della prostata o del viagra, il solito whisky di marca da assaggiare, (e non conosce l'assenzio! la Fée Verte! con tutte le citazioni letterarie che ci mette dentro pare impossibile che Gi-Gi non lo conosca, in Svizzera che lo inventò ne fu proibita la produzione e vendita e consumo con legge nella costituzione all'inizio del secolo scorso, per essere di nuovo permesso nel 2007, musa ispiratrice degli impressionisti: Toulouse Lautrec, Degas, Manet, Van Gogh e di scrittori quali Baudelaire e Rimbaud, Joyce e Hemingway...e molti cervelli finirono in pappa e altrettanti fegati andarono in malora..), ecco. E poi é farcito, e non potevano mancare, di citazioni letterarie messe qui e là che fanno tanto intelligenti et à la page, e da un po' di titoli di canzoni che anche quello fa parte dell'armamentario dell'investigatore-avvocato-in crisi-con problemi esistenziali. (e non parlo delle rimembranze giovanili compreso i giochi d'infanzia e tutto il resto dell'ambaradan, e non parlo dello spacciatore con etica e morale propria che ci si domanda come mai venda cocaina a tutto spiano ma tanto lo fa per la Bari bene e allora che si brucino pure il cervello...)
Già una piccola delusione. Però in borsetta il volumetto occupa poco spazio e stamattina é venuto mooooolto utile mentre mi trovavo in una sala d'aspetto d'ospedale:-)(less)

MA QUANT'E' BELLO IL PORTO DI GIOVINAZZO
Mi pare chiaro che l'avvocato Guido Guerrieri sia una brava persona: lui passa molto tempo a spiegarcelo e non è certo alla quarta avventura che me ne sono convinto.
Forse è anche simpatico. Sicuramente ha tanti aspetti nei quali è facile riconoscersi, altri nei quali piacerebbe riconoscersi. Guerrieri sei tutti noi? Esagerazione, ma non così esagerata.

A student named Manuela Ferraro has disappeared, and through her parents' attorney, Guido is hired to try to pick up her trail after the official channels have all been exhausted. This is not a role in which Guerrieri is comfortable, but he agrees to do it all the same. Her ex-boyfriend's attorney forbids him to speak to Guerrieri, and when Guido talks to her reluctant friends, he senses they'...more Temporary Perfections finds Guerrieri taking on the role of investigator outside of his legal practice. A student named Manuela Ferraro has disappeared, and through her parents' attorney, Guido is hired to try to pick up her trail after the official channels have all been exhausted. This is not a role in which Guerrieri is comfortable, but he agrees to do it all the same. Her ex-boyfriend's attorney forbids him to speak to Guerrieri, and when Guido talks to her reluctant friends, he senses they're holding things back. His job is not going to be easy and he knows it, especially with Manuela's friend Caterina, who has her own agenda.

Guerrieri has come a long way since events in Reasonable Doubts -- he now has associates in his new office, but he's still a lonely guy, who feels like his "emotional life is like a silent movie." He shares his thoughts with his punching bag, the "perfect therapist," who "never judges," "listens, and never interrupts." His nocturnal ramblings take him to a bar where he runs into an ex-client, a former prostitute named Nadia whose , and he finds in her someone to discuss movies, books and life.

Once again, Carofiglio has given his readers an intelligent read. As always, even the characters who seem to have only minor roles play a big part in helping to explain how Guerrieri understands human nature as well as himself. There is also a continuing dialogue throughout this and all of the novels in the series about the Italian system of justice and crime, and the sense of place takes you away for a while, whether Guerrieri's in Bari, along the coast at a seaside restaurant, or in Rome as he gets the clichéd thrill of climbing the Spanish Steps.

I can't really do this or any of the other books real justice in only a few paragraphs; these are novels you have to experience for yourself. They are not wild rides but should appeal to anyone who is looking for a higher level of intelligence in his or her choice of books, or to people who care about the development of character throughout a series.

Such a great series! My thanks to Bitter Lemon Press for making these available to the English-speaking public. Ciao, but just for now, Guido. (less)

I was very happily surprised by this book. But i'm not sure I'd include it in the mystery genre. While the mystery runs from beginning to end, the mystery portion seems to occupy only 25% of the book. It's mostly a character study with some philosophy of practicing law and a travelogue about Italy.

And that's to the book's credit. I found myself more interested in those aspects and the mystery elements stood in the wings, ready to come onstage to advance the story, provide a backdrop for the char...more

Carofiglio-Guerrieri è un "ragazzo degli anni '60" come me, e sa rievocare bene quelle atmosfere nostalgiche nelle quali ci identifichiamo e che troviamo irresistibili! Della serie "noi che..." :-)
Personaggio "positivo" e ben delineato, ironia, citazioni e riferimenti "colti". Già abbastanza per un buon libro, no?
Certo, come giallo non sta molto in piedi, anche se, purtroppo, forse la storia è più verosimile di quanto si possa credere (basta vedere una puntata di Chi l'ha visto..).

la storia manca quasi del tutto ma guido guerrieri, avvocato penalista ma anche uomo vero, pieno di dubbi, rimpianti e qualità è il protagonista assoluto di questo libretto che farà felicissimi i fans di carofiglio. io, non so perché, non riesco a resistere (sarà il lato nazional popolare che emerge?) all'acquisto compulsivo, leggo febbrilmente, ripasso quelle due nozioni sul processo penale che alla fine non penso mi serviranno mai nella vita, arrivo all'ultima pagina e mi dico: ma perché?

mah che dire...l'ho letto su consiglio autorevole. indagini su una scomparsa, un protagonista inconsueto che non è investigatore ma gioca a farlo. si scava nei misteri di una vita come le altre. medio.
ma le prima 300 pagine sono di un noioso, ragazzi... sproloqui sul lavoro, sulla vita dell'avvocato, presente e passata, sui libri/cantanti preferiti, sui suoi scrupoli morali...

Defense attorney Guido Guerrieri has been asked to look into the disappearance of a young woman named Manuela Ferraro. It has been six months since Manuela, age 22, was last seen. A thoroughgoing investigation by the Carabinieri, one of Italy’s national police forces, has turned up nothing. As all avenues of inquiry seem to have been explored, an assistant district attorney has requested that the case be closed. Manuela’s parents are understandably desperate.

Guido is not a trained investigator. But the lawyer for the Ferraro family is a friend of his. And besides, he finds himself empathizing deeply with the parents of the missing woman.

And so begins Guido Guerrieri’s involvement in the case. Currently I’m about two thirds of the way through this novel, and so far this genial ‘avvocato’ hasn’t made any discernible headway. But I’ve had a wonderful time getting to know him.

This is not a plot driven novel. Its richness lies in its character creation, vivid sense of place – the place being the city of Bari, in Italy’s Puglia region – and terrific writing. Temporary Perfections is the fourth in the Guido Guerrrieri series. The previous three have been translated and published in this country. I’m shaking my head and asking myself: How have I managed thus far to completely miss this author?

A brief piece on Carofiglio appeared in The New Yorker in 2005. In it, we learn that Gianrico Carofiglio began his career as a judge but then became a prosecutor “‘because I’m kind of a cop in my soul.’” (As a prosecutor, he specialized in going after the mob bosses of Puglia.) The Guido Guerrrieri series has been filmed for Italian television. Just going by his picture on the jacket flap, the author himself could have taken the lead.

I plan to go back and read the other Guerrieri novels. I absolutely love this book!(less)

Guido Guerrieri is a lawyer - an Avvocato - in Bari. Early in Gianrico Carofiglio's tale (Anthony Shugaar is the translater not the author), Guerrieri recalls a boyhood friend who had ambitions to become a magistrate but failed the exams. The friend's name was Sergio Carofiglio. A passing Hitchcock-ish joke to enjoy but not dwell on for there is much else to admire in what follows.

'Every character in Varofiglio's fiction has a story to tell and they are always worth hearing.'

Above sentence was the first thing I read on the book and it was intriguing, if done well.
It was for sure done well in this story, really well.

It was my first Carofiglio book, but I hope not the last one. I like the character Guido Guerrieri, who doesn't seem to be that important, shining kind of perosn with lots of friends and a busy social life which you often get in stories.

Il quarto capitolo della saga Guerrieri conferma che il libro precedente aveva qualcosa che non andava e quindi a questo giro l'avvocato si trasforma in un investigatore per risolvere l'ennesimo caso. Il risultato è un racconto interessante ma forse troppo stereotipato o scontato. Ma l'alter ego Guerrieri vigila su di noi con continue citazioni letterarie e legate al gener "investigativo" che danno al tutto il sapore di un esercizio di stile.

Diversamente da molti altri commentatori qui su aNobii, io ho trovato questo il miglior Carofiglio (Il passato è una terra straniera escluso, quello è inarrivabile!).
Un giallo che non è un giallo, enormemente intimista, dove l'autore riesce a non far succedere praticamente nulla per duecento pagine ma tu lettore sei così preso che nemmeno te ne accorgi...Ora vorrei solo poter entrare in libreria e trovare un altro caso dell'avvocato Guerrieri!

L’avvocato Guerrieri è un altro di quei personaggi che vorrei incontrare.
Nel suo caso perché è un perfetto mix di antico e moderno: un uomo che ha dei valori oramai quasi estinti, e che contemporaneamente è (quasi) privo di pregiudizi e vive il suo tempo.
La cosa mi attrae: è difficile trovare entrambe queste qualità in una persona sola.
E’ piacevole leggerne i pensieri, divertenti e condivisibili.

L'avvocato Guido Guerrieri, avvolto più che mai da pioggia e ricordi, incassa colpi sul ring e ne restituisce pochi. Temo sia per lui un momentaccio, il che succede, perchè Guerrieri è uno di noi.
Neanche la sua celebre autoironia riesce a tirargli su il morale.
Dai, avvocato, che a tutti spetta ogni tanto una buona dose di pugni, ma poi verrà il tempo del contrattacco.

I read this in English, not Italian but couldn't find it on Goodreads. It's fourth in a series but I didn't feel like I'd missed details from previous books. A good read, with an enjoyable character, and it surprised me a bit at the end. I hope Rizzoli translates more Guido Guerriere books--I'd certainly read them. It was called Temporary Perfections in English, BTW.

A lawywer writing about laws, crimes and criminals: things he knows really well and which are part of his everyday life...

Carofiglios is very fond of books, and writes simple, quiet - sometimes bitter - pleasant stories,not boring at all.

A quotation by I can't remember who in this book: 'the best way to make a dream come tue, is to wake up'.

Non mi ha esaltato.
Un buon libro per l'estate, non molto di più, specialmente se si è forti lettori.
Diversamente può essere che piaccia abbastanza perchè la lettura risulta molto scorrevole e inoltre si viene portati a simpatizzare per alcuni dei personaggi.

Deutscher Titel: "In ihrer dunkelsten Stunde" - Auch im vierten Roman mit Strafverteidiger Guido Guerrieri überzeugt Carofiglio mit intimen menschlichen Zeichnungen seiner Hauptfiguren. Guerrieris Stärke liegt wie so oft in seiner menschlichen Schwäche... Ein Stern Abzug dafür dass diesmal die spannenden Gerichtssaalszenen der ersten Romane fehlen - schade.

Cercare una ragazza scomparsa, questo è il compito dell'avvocato Guerrieri. Carofiglio con eleganza e scorrevolezza narrativa vuole raccontare una storia in cui, come nella vita nessuno dice la verità.
Il racconto è un po come una bella canzone e si rimane catturati nella lettura fino all'ultima pagina.

Ziemlich interessante Entwicklung, die Guido Guerrieri über alle vier Bücher und auch in diesem speziellen da nimmt. Dieses Mal ist die Midlife Crisis präsent, und lässt ihn auch die ein oder andere Dummheit begehen. Er ist totzdem ein sehr sympathischer Anwalt. Für mich ein 4,5-Sterne-Buch.

I really like this series. I first read a book by this writer having randomly picked up a title in my local Waterstones because I liked the cover. As it happened I liked the book too and I've since read the limited number of books this lawyer come writer has written. It's really nothing like the diet of American crime novels I usually exist on; it's less in your face, gentler, I guess. L'avvocato Guerrieri è invecchiato. Pensa spesso al tempo che passa ed è passato, ed inizia una relazione con una ragazza di 23- la quale si rivelerà coinvolta nella morte della sua amica, su cui Guerrieri sta indagando per conto dei genitori.

I've read on other Guido Guerrieri novel w/out memory of it really and think I will read it again after this one which was terrific. I LOVE the affect of the title; I love the philosophical musing that Guido slides off into - and a good mystery w/out thugs etc. Of course, I loved the aspect of ready a translation from Italian - interactions among people ARE different.

I have such vivid pictures in my head of Bari and Guido's world. I'll wait awhile before I launch another but I do like these boo...more

Appena letto le prime righe è stato come riabbracciare un vecchio e caro amico.
Ho ritrovato la vecchia atmosfera, lo stile asciutto e pulito, l'autoironia leggera e melanconica, i flashback nel passato, le citazioni, il background musicale.
