DEADLY DESCENDANT was absolutely AMAZING! For the life of me, I just could not put this book down. I couldn't until I flipped to the last page and STILL, I WANTED MORE! The Nikki Glass Series is one of my favorite new Urban Fantasy series and I am impressed at how much I am crazy for this series!

The 2nd installment to the Nikki Glass series! I have read Ms. Black's Morgan Kingsley series and was hesitant with this one....but so far Nikki is amazing :)

Nikki & Jamaal
So it was obvious after the first book that something along the romance side would develop between these two. Jamaal goes from hating Nikki to friendship in this book. Nikki & Jamaal
So it was obvious after the first book that something along the romance side would develop between these two. Jamaal goes from hating Nikki to friendship in this book. It's a tense frienship as they're learning to open up and trust each other....but it's a very good frienship for both of them. They are so much alike that their common ground has allowed them to become allies.

Nikki showed obvious sexual interest in Jamaal in the first book (in thoughts only) but it didn't seem like Jamaal did. Well, he proves her wrong in this installment with a couple of very nice kissing scenes. Unfortunately, they're still not completely trusting of each other to really go anywhere with this.

It is obvious, however, that beyond any sexual interest, they have come to rely on each other. Nikki helps to teach Jamaal how to calm down and work to not let his death magic control him. Jamaal teaches Nikki to be trusting and to work as a team. I was honestly surprised that between the two of them, Jamaal is the more open and willing to talk than Nikki is. It was interesting to see this side of him, but you can tell that he is only this way because of Nikki. It is obvious these two are drawn to each other for some reason and I can't wait to see what happens.

Plot...
There is a Liberi running around killing innocents. Anderson and his group have been approached by the Olympians in helping this person be stopped. It is obvious that the Olympians are not telling them everything, but they agree to keep more innocents from dying. As Nikki works the case and starts putting the puzzle pieces together it becomes very obvious that they have been played by both the Olympians and eventually the killer.

Overall...
A wonderful installment to this series. The action was fantastic along with the interactions between Nikki and Jamaal kept me turning the pages well into the night. There's no cliffhanger at the end of this book, but it is obvious where Ms. Black is headed with the story. I will be waiting impatiently for the next installment.(less)

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this sequel every bit as much as the first book. It was interesting seeing the aftermath of having found Emma and living at the mansion with the others. Emma seems to be a huge bitch, though. She and Anderson frequently have screaming fights. Nikki as the newest member of the group is especially uncomfortable around this, though it seems everyone is.

If that's not enough to make her feel unbalanced, Steph drops by with a file regarding Nikki's adoption figuring that now that Nikki knows she likely got her Descendant abilities from her mother's side, that Nikki would want to try to track her down. Nikki is adamant that she doesn't want to do this, but she can't help but to be tempted. I really do hope something happens on that front. I want to know why her mother left her in that church. And whether or not that church in particular was something significant. And why didn't she leave Nikki's brother, too? And is who Nikki's father was in any way important? I'm seriously curious about all of this.

My favorite part, though was all of the interaction between Nikki and Jamaal. I shouldn't want them to get together considering what he's done to her, but maybe I'm as much of a bleeding heart as Nikki is because I managed to forgive him, too. That man has been in some serious pain. When he opened up and told Nikki the truth about his past, I was shocked. I liked seeing them start a bit of a bonding process. And then all that sexual tension reared up. I hope we get something more there, too. It actually seems like Nikki might be good for him. He actually pushed himself to learn how to deal with his death magic despite believing it was impossible. And he never would have tried if not for Nikki.

The case they were working on really had me wondering how they would get out of the situation Kerner set up for them. And then Emma tried to make it even worse because she wanted revenge against Konstantin. Not to mention, she hates Nikki's guts. I still don't understand her jealousy there. I've not had the least bit of an impression that she actually loves Anderson, so why is she so dead set that Nikki is his new girlfriend? Why is she so damned delusional? Neither Nikki or Anderson have done anything to provoke this situation. I was glad when that bitch made the decision she did at the end of the book. I'm sick of her ass already. Maybe she'll take a permanent leave of absence by the time the third book is over.(less)

It is possible to like something problematic as long as I acknowledge the problems.

Deadly Descendant by Jenna Black

Nikki Glass is a former private eye who suddenly became a Liberi, a quasi-immortal. Her change to more than human has required more sacrifices than she expected. I had a lot of high expectations for Deadly Descendant. The first installment was a hit. I loved it from the beginning to the end: the premise, the characters, the plot.

The book got me excited and that feeling had been eluding me of late. So, I held my breath as a flipped to the prologue of Deadly Descendant. And I kept holding it. I was all in from page 2. I was pretty quick to pick up DARK DESCENDANT, the first Nikki Glass novel, when it came out last year even though Jenna Black has been hit or miss for me in the past. I thought the world she created sounded like a lot of fun and for the most part, it was. I was quite excited to see DEADLY DESCENDANT when it arrived in the mail a little while ago because I wanted to know what was going to happen to Nikki next.

In this amazing world, there are people descended from gods from all of the pantheons a...more I was pretty quick to pick up DARK DESCENDANT, the first Nikki Glass novel, when it came out last year even though Jenna Black has been hit or miss for me in the past. I thought the world she created sounded like a lot of fun and for the most part, it was. I was quite excited to see DEADLY DESCENDANT when it arrived in the mail a little while ago because I wanted to know what was going to happen to Nikki next.

In this amazing world, there are people descended from gods from all of the pantheons around the world, each blessed (or cursed) with near-immortality and gifts based on their ancestor. And just like regular people, some are good and some are bad. The bad ones are the Olympians. They believe that only descendants of Greek gods matter and they're all about domination. The good ones are the Liberi. They're woefully outnumbered but they're more accepting and sort of left alone by the Olympians thanks to a deal between the two leaders, Constantin (Team Olympian) and Anderson (Team Liberi). Nikki was a very reluctant Liberi in DARK DESCENDANT but she's much more accepting of her place on the team and her new life in DEADLY DESCENDANT. Of course, the Olympians still want her since she's a descendant of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, which makes her a rare commodity, so Nikki's life is still constrained by forces outside of her control.

I thoroughly enjoyed the main mystery of DEADLY DESCENDANT: dealing with the "wild dog" attacks that are actually controlled by a descendant of Anubis. It unfolds in a very interesting way and it brings a lot of the characters' morals into question. Different characters -- Anderson and Nikki, in particular -- have different ideas about how this descendant should be dealt with and it's interesting to see folks butting heads over appropriate punishment for immortals.

There are also some excellent developments in Nikki's relationships with the rest of the Liberi. The sexual tension between Nikki and Jamaal is incredible and I loved watching Nikki try to find her footing with Anderson after learning his secret in DARK DESCENDANT. There are also some nice moments between Blake and Nikki, and Nikki and her sister Steph. The most challenging person in the Liberi mansion, though, has to be Emma. She's so angry and more than a little crazy and she's taking many of her frustrations out on Nikki.

DEADLY DESCENDANT builds on the world established in DARK DESCENDANT and creates something even more satisfying and thrilling. This book is packed with action, adventure, mystery, and character growth, and I can't wait to see where Jenna Black takes us next time. This series is a strong entry into the urban fantasy genre and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves stories rooted in mythology or kick-butt heroines!

I almost bit off my little sisters finger when she tried to get me to stop reading this. Before starting I had totally forgotten my love for all things Jamaal. Not to worry though. It's back. Forever.
Not to mention this one had more of Jack. I love it. I freaking love it! Turns out he's got a good guy buried under all the trickery. *sigh*

Setting aside my unnatural attraction to fictional characters I have to rave about the actual story too.

I really wanted to like this book, I really did. I find the world fascinating and the writing is solid but I dislike the main character intensely.

I don't know if she's actually a hypocrite or if she just rubbed me the wrong way but I found it very unfair that she held everyone to these impossible standards and expected them to live up to it without knowing *why* they wanted to keep secrets but then when it comes to her it's different. Jenna Black has a flair for Paranormal stories, and she has created a believable world that tells of a legacy from the Gods. In Deadly Descendant readers get to know more about Nikki, The Liberis and The Olympians. Anderson, Jamaal (Anderson’s Liberi, descendant of Kali) and the crazy killer all has one thing in common…they are descendant of a death god/goddess. I thought the death descendants’ abilities were all so intriguing like death comes to anyone without a single touch, the ability to walk through anything solid, and create shadow animals and portals. I think the best part of the entire book was the budding relationship between Nikki and Jamaal, I love the tension but at the same time I cringe when I think about how the two were in book 1, Dark Descendant. Jamaal was hell bent on trying to kill/make life hell for Nikki when she accidentally killed his best friend. He hated her so much, but never did anything serious because he was afraid of getting kicked out of the house. Now, the two are slowly getting along, but not without a few bumps here and there. Whenever Nikki and Jamaal got closer/along, Jamaal would pull away. It turns out Nikki and Jamaal have a lot more in common than I thought, both of them know the feelings of rejection, loneliness, and fear.

Bottom Deadly Descendant was a great addition to the Nikki Glass series, and I can’t wait to see what Black has in store for Nikki and the gang. I highly recommend this series to all UF and PNR fans, and while I wasn’t blown away by the first book this book totally exceeded my expectations. Deadly Descendant was a nonstop action rollercoaster ride, with a fun mythology infused mystery and a sizzling chemistry of an unexpected couple. (less)

Whereas the Olympians is a group exclusively meants for the descendants of Greek gods. They do not accept any refusals and are utterly ruthless in their hunt for and murder of families of descendants of non-Greek gods. Down to the very last man, woman and child...

In Deadly Descendant the Olympians and the Descendants agree to an uneasy truce in their attempt to hunt down a rogue descendant who is killing innocents. As a descendant of Artemis, it falls to Nikki to lead this hunt, but too new to her powers to have mastered them yet, she mainly relies on the ordinary methods she used in her work as a private investigator. For Nikki it's a relief to have something to occupy herself with, anything to avoid Anderson's wife Emma, who seems to have taken an unreasonable and intense dislike to her. Still processing the fact that she is now immortal and all the events in Dark Descendant, she is unsure what course of action to take regarding her family and the new family she is now a part of.

Nikki may be young, but she has already been through more than most people go through in an entire lifetime. This makes her both strong and vulnerable. There is one amongst the Descendants who understands her, because his life has not exactly been perfect either. Seeing the prickly dance between Jamaal and Nikki was quite entertaining. They really are two of a kind! Anderson is a little harder to understand, but like Nikki says you cannot expect someone like him to behave like a human. One cannot deny that he is one of the most intriguing characters in this series. Another character I liked getting to know a little better, was Jack. All descendants of Loki are bound to be complicated and Jack is no exception. However, his unpredictability makes him all the more interesting in my eyes.

As is always the case with Jenna Black I found myself instantly submerged into the wonderful world she created. Dramatic, action-packed, magical and entertaining, Deadly Descendants enthralled me from start to finish. I was sad to turn the last page and hope that the third book in the Nikki Glass novel is already being written. (less)

Nikki Glass is a descendant of the goddess Artemis. She is also a private investigator - which makes her quite good at finding things. I picked up Deadly Descendant last week at the library, kind of randomly as I sometimes do, and I wasn’t disappointed this time.

The story

3.5 Stars. Well, I remarked in my review of Dark Descendant that I wanted more of Jamaal, and happily in this book I got my wish. Nikki is very much still the outsider with the Liberi; but her tenuous relationship with Jamaal is getting stronger and more personal. He looks to be her love interest for the series on down the line.

Less happened in this one, but at the same time OH SO MUCH MORE happened.

Emma was an effing bitch that I wanted to kill myself. Yeah she went through some horrible stuff, but oh my god she was unreasonable when it came to Nikki which was really annoying. I completely enjoyed this book. Nikki hasn't been an immortal for long but she has already found some significant information. She has also made some significant enemies. Now there is an immortal out there attacking men once a week with a pack of dogs...or at least that is what the Olympians are saying and what the news is reporting. First off I have to say I really enjoy reading this book from Nikki's point of view. Nikki reminds me a lot of Cat from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. Jenna Black writes this series in first person so the reader can go into the mind of Nikki and read what she is thinking. Nikki doesn't put up with much and I find her sarcasm quite funny at times. :)

Deadly Descendant takes on the same easy pace as its predecessor, Dark Descendant, but with more heat, action, and emotion! Jenna Black gives readers a greater look into some of Nikki's Liberi housemates, especially, Jamaal. Jamaal is a very out of control character and completely mysterious in the first book, so it's intriguing to see him slightly open up and drop his guard around Nikki.

It was incredibly easy to slip back into Black's world and for the most part the story moved along well. The mystery element was a little light, but the plot kept me involved enough that I didn't mind.

Note: Liberi are descendants of gods from various pantheons. Olympians are elitist and purists; only descendants of Greek gods are worthy of living and basically humans should worship/serve Olympians. I don't know what to say about this one, I had such high hopes after the first book but this one fell a little short. If I'm honest it should probably be rated about 3.5Stars.

I can't quite put my finger on what was wrong about it but I think the "love interest" part didn't help. It felt forced, as if it was just there because there had to be someone, it didn't feel like a natural progression at all.

Characters in book are dull and unintersting and most of the time they are also annoying. Emma is only person, whose personality is some what realistic, but Black writed her as bad guy, which lessers her effectivity.
