Black Butler, Vol. 8 is probably my favorite volume so far. It keeps your heart racing with amazing action sequences and then hits you in the gut with its morbid twists and turns. The moral ambiguity will have you teetering between cheering Ciel on and then cursing him all at the same time. He is such an ornery thi...more

I will NOT, I repeat, NOT be continuing this series. After this volume, I've lost all enjoyment in this series.

It wasn't that it wasn't good; it was .. I guess.. But Ciel Phantomhive, you have pushed me to Alienation Planet for the last time, and this last time, it was a forceful shove off the cliff into a glass filled pit of anger and hair-pulling.

=INITIATING POINTLESS RANT ON CIEL PHANTOMHIVE-

I have a love-hate relationship with Ciel Phantomhive. I love him -- but it's a grudging love-- bec...more

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

The gardener was used for scientific experiments making him a good fighter and incredibly strong.

The maid is sexy and an amazing sniper!! She totally took those circus freaks out. The chef is a machine with those newly made weapons, though he destroyed half the Phantomhive building blowing things up. At least they took out the enemy and kept Lizi and the secrets safe.

Ciel sure knows how to pick his help. Tanaka is awesome too! How could I not have known about this? Sup...more

Although I was kind of disturbed, when it was revealed that the helpless children's bones were being used for making the artificial limbs, and even considered discontinuing reading the series over that, I was very glad when justice was served to that evil guy, Phantomhive-style. Sadly, I actually kind of saw that coming, as I had had sneaking suspicions of such while reading other volumes as well. So, when they burned the building down, while felt slightly sad for the children, I also felt as t...more

And so the circus arc is brought to it's conclusion (?). It's shocking, violent and utterly brilliant. Then the transition back to comedy is smooth. This series literally has everything. (Except maybe accurate representations of Victorian ideals at the time: "Nina!! You're being indecent by exposing so much of your legs!!" ...Meanwhile no one bats an eyelid at her groping Mey-Rin's breasts! I'm 99% sure that would've been a scandal in the nineteenth century.)

The characters continue to shine. Cie...more

The manga is so violent now, too much blood. I feel so sorry for little Ciel; his past is so dark. When he was in Sebastian's arms he looked so fragile.

But then, his decision about all members of Gelvin's house... that was disturbing, and so coward of him. Who the hell does he think he is? Only because he went thru so much, and terrible stuff, and because he is the master of a great demon like Sebastian, he does not have any right. I don't understand his decision at all, and it made me almost di...more

really, the servants of the phantomhive family really surprised me by their skills. ok now it was really clear from the starting that finny had toooooo much of power inside him but who knew that he could use it so awesomellyyyyy and meirin for another. i mean i really thought that she a dumb and stupid but i myself stupefied when i saw her amazing skills(actually i think that she should not wear glasses as she has such fantastic eyes! but then it will take the fun out)*sighs dramatically* and la...more

Ah, this volume was so bloody and dark and disturbing and I loved it. A fitting end to the Noah's Circus story arc, especially if you are fans of Ciel's servants and the shinigami that collect the souls of Victorian London. Last chapter was a welcome bright spot in a book of mostly depressing material, although the cognitive dissonance in its placement was a bit jarring. I really wish Yen Press did 'next volume' previews for Black Butler; it needs it!

PS - Nina Hopkins is basically a representati...more

With every volume I read, I become more invested in this series. I love all the characters and all the plot twists. Yana Toboso does such a wonderful job creating a gripping series with beautiful, lush art. The art is just as much a reason to read it as the plot. It’s the best manga art I’ve come across, so far.

Following Ciel through his journey has been exciting and sometimes heartbreaking. This was one of those times that it was hea...more

Like the other stories in this series, it didn't disappoint! The story line and plot was very well thought out. The tale of Ciel and Sebastian going to the circus to find the perpetrator and the leader who is calling the shots to kidnap the kids from various cities every time the circus came to town.

This story was both very sad, and very amusing! With Ciel’s mission ending, having found who was kidnapping the kids, and seeing to it that they cease to exist was a little harsh if you consider what...more

Not gonna lie, I'm totally giving this volume a 5 star rating simply because of this:

bad ass

OMG that is so many levels of bad ass I can't even begin to describe it!!! The first chapter of this volume kicked so much ass I was about ready to jump out the window from the sheer awesomeness of it all! The rest was good too...but seriously, that first chapter has probably been my favorite in this entire series so far.

I really like the reapers! William is righteous, Grelle is AMAZING, and the new one that sh...more

In this book you get to see Ciel's and Sebastian's really close relationship (when Ciel gets sick and when having flashbacks of the mark of the beast), and you get to see more of what exactly happened to Ciel when being sacrificed in the ritual and when he called upon Sebastian. Also one last thing, the phantomhive's servants kicking ass was pretty awesome. NOW, THAT LAST CHAPTER HAD ME LAUGHING SO HARD :) that chapter was the best.

I'm in love with the manga black butler, it's one of my all time favorites. I understand it's not for everyone, but I enjoy reading it, and re-reading it in some cases, it's a refreshing read and it's always fun. Albeit, sometimes very dark and very creepy, as you get along you get a more indepth feel of the work, but it's a great piece. LOVE black butler!
Kathleen
The end of the circus arc. Circumstances are resolved with hysterical laughter at human nature and the revelation of the unique abilities of the other Phantomhive servants. Then we get a visit from a tailor as an excuse to draw Ciel in lots of adorable outfits. Everything you want from a manga.
Sara
We finally get a big chunk of Ciel's history and it's disturbing- this poor kid!!

The volume starts of with the hilarious kick ass antics of the manor staff and find out that they all have inhuman superpowers! So much fun.

I love that this series has taken such a dark turn...so good!
Angie
It seems I save up on reading these manga volumes until the Teen Read Challenge every year. So let the Kuroshitsuji binge begin! In this volume we see the end of the circus arc, a lot of dying, and a survivor swears for revenge on Ciel! Le gasp!
Lola
It was great.
The only part at the end were they did the Mystery came, kind of reminded me of some movies.
It seems to me they like to make the settings like that on all mystery books or movies.
But over all that it was Awesome.

Another marvelous installment in what is probably one of my favorite franchises of all time!

In showdown with the circus people comes to an end and the Young Master can finally take a much deserved holiday. Chaos ensues.
Melissa Star
I loved the flash backs of the servants and I now understand why they are there to serve Ciel Phantomhive. In the anime I was confused but now it is more clearer. I can't wait for the next voluume!
Allie
WAHHHHHHHHHH<3! I absolutely love this series! Yana Toboso the surprises in her series are awesome and how she bases them off of true events. I like this book the best, because of the fact that the Phantomhive servants actually fight. They are freaking awesome in this book... Honestly I don't know how this series will end I just don't want it to end like season two does.
Jane
This volume just seemed pointless and violent, and Sebastian and Ciel hardly even appeared in it. I guess it's time for me to bail on this series.
Mizuki Genshou
the plot is getting tiresome, and the settling reminds me too much of Count Cain by Kaori Yuki.
VampireAngelSadist
Hahahaha I just love Ciel!! No matter how messed up he's getting, I'm glad that we're getting a glimpse at his past.
I found it interesting that when he found the factory for the abandoned kids, he laughed at the Circus worker's deaths and persistence at something that no longer existed.
One thing for sure I'm glad about, is that Ciel killed that creepy man they called "father." He scared the shit out of me, maybe because I was reading this at the dead of night or maybe because he cut off his own...more

What a terribly heart-wrenching, touching and bitter sweet ending. :( *sniffle* Poor Ciel... <3

This was big. Really big. You learn so much more about the characters and I was almost exclaiming aloud at how awesome some parts were! I love black butler! I'm going to start reading Volume IX once I'm able to get myself to Hastings!

Badass servants! Shinigami! Yuri relief at end of serious arc! What more could I want????
