Bill Phillips is a great guy. I only say that because this book changed me. Bill Phillips' insightful, friendly, informative style is welcoming. He sees beyond the need to "get thin" and identifies (correctly) how focusing so much on your weightloss can lead to self-absorbtion. His Journal even gives daily tips to do random acts of kindness to redirect your focus. Beyond this, the workouts are really quick, very challenging, and require planning. The meals are really good (mostly...more

Bill came into my life right when I needed him. I was going through a seperation and needed to feel good about myself. My son brought the book to my attention - something he wanted to do. I told him let me read it when you are finished so I will know how to help you. After a day of reading I told him - I want to do this with you! We worked the book steadily for over 4 months. It was a truning point in both of our lives. It gave me the physical strength I needed. I lost 25 pounds in 3 mon...more

flabby, fat people
One summer I exercised doing cardio for an hour every day for three months, ate right, probably starved myself and I lost about 10 lbs, but I didn't look any different still flabby and soft in the middle. It didn't even get me into the shape I wanted to be in for my hike down Havasupai canyon. The next January, I read Body for Life and it changed my perspective on losing weight and it transformed my body into something that looked guuuuud. I have never been in better shape in my life. Great exercise and eating plan. When I was following this plan, I could see a big difference in how I looked and felt. So far, every trainer I've talked to said that Bill Phillips has the best eating plan out there, and his meal supplements are the best (EAS brand)
I really liked the workout section because it showed you exactly how to do the exercises, when to do them and how often to do them!! Great for someone like me who knew nothing about an exercise plan. I made copies of the exerci...more

I was inspired to try this "plan" by a group of friends. The way I looked at it...I had nothing to loose, either way the next 12 weeks would happen, why not make it the best 12 weeks I could?
Well, I did have something to loose...I followed this program and took my first challenge in March of 2007. I lost 3 clothing sizes, 10 scale pounds, close to 20 inches, 16 pounds of fat and gained 11 pounds of muscle. When I started I could not run across the street without becoming winded...at ...more

Courtesy of Park and Linds... this book brought me hope that one day I could be in peak physical and mental shape. For 12 weeks i ate right, exercised everyday, and limited tv. A week later i was eating anything i wanted, looked at my raquetball racket and spent most my time on the couch.
This is a great book to motivate you for a little while then it just gets boring. So thanks P and L for helping me figure out that i like the way i am and change is good for about 12 weeks. I love America and ...more

has good info. however, the author seems to believe that everyone wants to look and be his so called perfect. I don't think that everyone cares as much about this as he thinks or as he does. he has some good info though and if looking like the ppl in the after photos is your goal.. I guess this would work... as for me it isn't my goal in life i to be cookie cutter perfect.... and i enjoy cardio.. and think only being able to do it 20 mins would stink ( he only wants ppl to do 20 min 3X a week...more

I really enjoyed this book. I read someone else say that the author is great because he teaches weight-lifting 101, a healthy eating plan, and aerobics. Very simple, but very motivating. Quick, easy read that is sure to energize the most slothful person to move their body. (A few of the myths that he proves wrong were slightly outdated, but I think I read the 1999 edition. Other than that, no complaints.)

A freakin' AWESOME work, a very simple approach to bodybuilding and nutrition...ought to be taught in our school system, in my opinion. The one flaw is that proteins and carbohydrates take longer to digest when eaten simultaneously, as the book prescribes...not that it's horribly bad, just a bit counterproductive for heavier people. This is the "AWAKEN THE GIANT WITHIN" for the physical body.

I am currently on week six... it is getting a bit dull, but you can totally do it from home if you have some weights, a treadmill or access to the outdoors-which most of us do. I am thinking it may be fun to do the weight lifting in a gym for a change- but all in all it's very straight forward, not time consuming and I have lost two pant sizes in six weeks, so that's a good thing, right!?

This book is more than just an exercise plan or a diet, it is a new way of life, that if followed, will get you in to shape and potentially change the way you approach all the challenges in your life. I found it to be a little cheesy, but the program is great. He is a great motivator and the program really does work. Its a good starting place for anyone who wants to get into shape.

Everybody
The book has a lot of stories of fat people that made it through the program. There were some women that went from ugly to hot in the before and after photos. The book is great cause it teaches you about nutrition and shows you hot to lift weights, complete with pictures. Plus he gives you a formula on what to do to become a better you. I am finally going to do this program.

I Would give it five stars if it were based on results but the book itself is a little too "Motivational Speaker" for me. I especially love the part where you do your reps to a cadence of "I am building my body for life."
But who knows, maybe Bill lives in a van down by the river and eats government cheese, Chris Farley R.I.P.

I just started this program and am in "the challenge" talked about in the book (as of Monday)... :) It is life changing. I have been recommending this book all day long to people at work, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to change their life by adding healthy habits that are proven to work along with fitness.

I know some my ask me why I rated this a 4 star, so let me tell you. I was actually thinking about a 5 star for this book, because it is one of the only excercise books I applied what I learned and lost TONs of weight. The program may be tough, but I am first hand witness of the 3 months change that happened to my body.

There is by far, the best most effective book on personal fitness. Bottom line, it works (if you don't believe me, I'll show you my own before/after pictures). :)
Mr. Phillips not only gives you the tools you need to create the physical change, he shows you the mental capacity you need to do AND keep it.

Finding this book while working at Waldenbooks was one of the tipping points of my life. After engaging with this text, I felt empowered and aware of a vastly different bodily concept than what I had grown into. This was the springboard book for my continuing exploration of my health.

I had a lot of trouble sticking to this! FOllowing the plan was easy, but my blood work went out of whack within 2 months of having too much protein. I know this isn`t everyone`s experience, but since I get bloodwork done monthly, my body let me know that it was too much.

Although I'm not the poster child for the Body for Life fitness plan, I did get a lot out of the book. But like most plans, you have to actually DO the exercises and KEEP doing them in order to benefit. Just reading the book (oddly enough) did not make me fit. Bummer.

Kind of a weird book to recommend, but it is nice to have a book like this around to help debunk myths and know directions to go. You can't argue much with all the photos of before and after shots. I think it is a book that one needs to constantly refer to.
