Spiral is an interesting book. I read the other books in the series before this one, and I can say I’m a bit disappointed. It takes place in present day England and is very fantastical. In the previous books of this series u learn about all kinds of weird stuff beneath the surface of the earth, but this one takes place mainly above the surface.

The book begins where the 4th left off. In an estate in the English countryside, Preparing to battle the enemy. Simple enough right? Wrong then the auth...more

It was definitely action packed, which I liked. And it was easy to follow, even though it's been a year since I read Closer and didn't remember everything leading up to this point. It certainly kept me up till midnight a few times, trying to get through as much as I could before bed. My only problem with the series is that I feel it's being dragged on too long. I loved Tunnels. Deeper had me on the edge of my seat. Freefall and Closer had me primed for the perfect ending, which felt inevitable....more

This fifth installment in the thrilling “Tunnels” series finds our intrepid heroes, Will and Chester, hiding out at Parry’s estate while undergoing intense training exercises. The Styx have begun implanting bombs inside random people set to detonate during major events so as to have maximum deadly effect. This paves the way for the Rebecca twins to implement the conversion Phase of impregnating humans with eggs which w...more

Did not finish. Maybe its been too long since I read the rest of the series, but I couldn't get into this book even though I had been eagerly anticipating it. Once again, a good series is ruined. Sometimes I think far too many authors are trying to emulate the success of a JK Rowling or similar author when the truth is they just don't have the capability to write a multi-book series and do it well.

Also, this book reads much more like a young adult book than a children's book. Not a huge deal...H...more

I liked this book but it seemed like there were holes. The were months of the timeline just jumped over and I found that really irritating after the amount of detail thrown into the first 4 books in the series. The book was a good deal shorter pagewise so perhaps it was written in a hurry. There were also lots of editing mistakes that hadn't existed in the previous books either.

However, this book was still a fun read. Completely terrifying but fun. And by terrifying I mean creepy horror movie,...more

"Spiral" (the fifth installment in the "Tunnels" series) is probably the best one since the very first book, Tunnels (also the name of the book series). In the series, protagonists Will Burrows and Chester discover an hidden hole outside Will's house, which they explore and eventually leads them to a massive underground city called The Colony. From there, Will and Chester must adapt to the new life there while trying to find a way back home....more

Wow--this book was a huge disappointment! Although many teens and adults enjoy the series, it was way too gory and gruesome for a younger reader. The author should have kept that more in mind. In fact, in the author's acknowledgements at the end, he said that he had originally written the middle portion of the book differently--until the editor suggested he explore who the Styx really are. Bad, bad move. Mr Roderick, next time follow your instincts and go with what you feel the first time. As it...more

Tapi… Kenapa hingga sekarang belum diadaptasi ke layar lebar ya? #ditimpukensiklopedia

*****SPOILERS*****

The second I picked this book up, I was wary about reading it. The series had already started to feel like it was just endlessly dragging on in "Closer", so I had hoped that this would be the last book in the series to wrap it all up. The last time I had read a book in the series was about a year and a half ago, but I can still clearly remember what these books were supposed to be about. And "Spiral" did not include any of it. This book was sooo different than the others bo...more

Petualangan Will berlanjut di dunia atas.

Well. It has been a while since I have read the previous four books, (Tunnels, Deeper, Freefall, and Closer) so I had to do a refresher course via the internet. After that fix in my memory relapse, I continued on to read Spiral. Let me just say, I was amazed. Spiral mixes in new elements into a story that I never saw coming. However, I was close to tears when Bartleby died!! Oh...!! That made me so stinking mad! The worst part though was when Roderick Gordon gave a detailed description of teh l...more

Sci fi/fantasy for 5th grade and up. This book reviewed the differences between the Styx and the human races and why they went to topsoil. The horror created by the Styx women (besides the two Rebeccas) after the "Phase" is deliciously frightening: the insect legs on the Styx women's backs, the ability to deposit hundreds of egg sacs to develop inside human bodies that grow into warrior soldiers, the grubs bursted out of the hosts bodies..... As exciting as the other 4 in the series.

Spiral is a very good book. Although some of the parts of the story such as when the Styx, an upgraded version of the human, feed their young and when the main character talks to his companions about strategies, the action in the story really keeps me hooked. In parts it may be violent like in riots and fights but it isn't gruesome and bloody. This book is one of the best series I have ever read and if you like the book series Eragon, you will surely like this one called the Tunnels series.

For the rough time I had getting through the first couple of chapters (as in, I'm pretty sure I read them three or four times, because I just wasn't getting it), I liked Spiral much much better than Freefall and Closer (Tunnels # 3 and 4 respectively).

The story definitely took an unexpected twist, but I felt like Spiral finally went back full circle and got back to the concept of the original Tunnels story.

Can't wait to read the (next? last?) book when it comes out later this year.

I'd recommend...more

In the fifth book of the Tunnels installment, Will and his motley crew of would-be world savers are confronted with an increasing threat from the Styx. Like the other novels of this series, Will's adventures lead the reader over, under and through modern-day England. Unlike the other novels, I didn't find myself anxiously returning to this book, despite the fact I thought this was the final installment of the series.

I thought the plot of this novel was convoluted, though perhaps it isn't this pa...more

I just this moment finished reading Spiral. I'm quite sure this wasn't the end of the series (right? right?!?) but it was a fabulous continuation in the saga. How exciting to learn more about the puzzle that is The Styx race! Great things have happened in this book--if you haven't read Tunnels yet (the first book in the series) you MUST go out and find yourself a copy immediately.

SPOILERS.

If you read Eragon or Wheel of Time, you'll definitely like Tunnes series. The plot is amazing, but it felt like there were some holes in this book. My favourite of all has to be Freefall or Deeper, because Spiral had a more unusual storyline, with the Styx being half human, half insects. It just didn't feel the same, but I enjoyed the new characters anyway !

I enjoyed the original Tunnels but have enjoyed each sequel less and less. The plot continues to spiral farther and farther afield and often feels forced and manufactured. And the move from juvenile fiction to fantasy/horror is not appreciated. Not a particularly violent book, but graphic enough that I don't really want my 10 year-old who read Tunnels reading this.

Another excellent book in the Tunnels series. For a YA series, this book was particularly violent and gory. Spiral goes in a completely different direction from the first four books but it works. One thing that is interesting with this book is the author's ability to kill off characters--don't get too attached to ANYONE including main characters. This book ends on a cliffhanger of sorts so I'm interested to see how they finish it up.

I have really enjoyed the Tunnels series and could not wait to read this one. After a slow start, I couldn't put it down although I must admit to finding it a bit creepier than the others in the series. Unfortunately, I now have to wait for the final book to find out if Will and his friends will live happily ever after or if the evil Rebecca's will win.
Linda
Not sure if this is the true end of the series but it pretty spectacular and exciting. Young Will and friends must put an end to the Styx and their plans once and for all. As Will finds that there are more people willing to help he begins to feel that there is a chance to succeed. Good read, if a little long.

Ceritanya terasa berat walau menarik.

Book 5 in the Tunnels series. The Styx are implementing a plan to take over the Topsoil world. Will and his group of friends must stop them at all costs or Armegeddon may be unleashed. Fans of the series will continue to enjoy this action-packed novel. For higher level readers.

How come I haven't put review on this book.. oh well.. I love the Tunnel series.. it's dark and complexed (in a way).. every series of this book surprises me a lot! this one probably has the most surprising story twist of the series so far.. new monsters, blossoming romance, wars, etc etc.. It has a very neat story line which i like so much.. it can really complement very well with real world setting.. It seems that this book offers several world setting, one is real, one is dystopian, and the o...more

I found myself getting very bored through most of the book till the end. This book is by far my least favorite of the series. All though the ending of this one did pull together alot of the pieces of the overall story. 3 out of 5 stars is the best I can give it.

I really love this series. I know that this series is for young adults and is pretty dark, but this book would be frightening for young kids due to all the death. But the story is always moving along and cannot wait to see what happens next.

Roderick Gordon is the author of the Tunnels series of books. Born in 1960, he grew up in Highgate, North London, and eventually went to University College where he dabbled in genetics and listened to Joy Division. After graduating without the faintest idea what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, he spent some time in the wilderness when he played in a few bands, then somehow fell into a jo...more
