The stories in this collection were written over several decades, and changes in the author's life had a profound impact on the voices and themes utilized in the tales. In these pages lie noble truths, profound awakenings, and in some cases, very unpleasant endings for some very wicked people. The short stories contained in this book are very different from each other in some ways, yet similar themes run through many. They almost all seem to have at least a touch of the supernatural about them, several are military related, and most have to do with death. I often find short stories to only just begin to captivate my attention before they’re finished and it’s on to the next one. It takes, in my opinion, a particular talent to be able to engage with a reader in the first few sentences and still leave them fulfilled not too many pages after when the story concludes. Fulcher is certainly one of those talents, and there isn’t a single story in the book I didn’t enjoy. As different and disparate from each other as they were engrossing and entertaining.
