Sherlock Holmes, just thirteen, is a misfit. His highborn mother is the daughter of an aristocratic family, his father a poor Jew. Their marriage flouts tradition and makes them social pariahs in the London of the 1860s; and their son, Sherlock, bears the burden of their rebellion. Friendless, bullied at school, he belongs nowhere and has only his wits to help him make his...more

Dimasa mendatang s...more

What an intriguing idea! Take the lore of Sherlock Holmes, stand back and ask: "What would this intriguing man have been like as a boy? Did he have friends? What were his parents like? What made him realize that he was the ultimate detective?"

As an adult, with a least a little knowledge of the Holmes canon, I found the book quite enjoyable (no, I'm not a Doyle purist so I had no problem with some of the changes made). However, most children I don't think will like this book over much. Strong rea...more

Thirteen-year-old Sherlock Holmes is living a hard life with his poverty-stricken parents in London. Tired of being mocked at school, Sherlock stops attending and instead spends his days on the streets of the city, observing everyone and everything around him. When a murder is committed, Sherlock finds himself suddenly pulled into the case and must find the real murderer before he himself is found guilty of having had a part in the crime.

I love Sherlock Holmes, so I was excited to read this auth...more

Dua sejoli...more

This is an excellent mystery and a great introduction to the character of Sherlock Holmes as a teenager. It is a completely different imagining of Sherlock's youth from the Andrew Lane Young Sherlock Holmes series (Death Cloud, darker and I think truer to the character. This 13 year old Sherlock lives in a poor section of London with his opera-loving mother and his Jewish scientist father; he often skips school to hang out in the city, where he hones the observational skills he learned from his...more

If compare it with Colossal Detective Stories (Agatha Christie's Novel) or Japanese Detective Comic, it is still far under them. Although it's a Legendary Sherlock Holmes story but yet it not too much bring sensation. Probably it's targeted for teenager read.

Here are my comments:

1. There is too much detail like the author is a painter. It's actually good if the described scene is useful for the analysis but they aren't. The book is very thick because of that. That's why I skimming several parts...more

He avoids school to watch people in the square. He's quiet, thoughtful, and observant. His name is Sherlock Holmes. In 1867, he is thirteen. A brutal murder and a chance meeting with the accused spurs Sherlock to action. He believes Mohammad didn't kill the woman. He just has to prove it.

What I thought: Brilliant! If anyone has ever wondered why Sherlock Homes is the way he is, they need to read this series. His childhood makes his adult years comprehensible. His misanthropic ways were born in h...more

Sherlock Holmes!

This series is all in all, really good. But it is sometimes (most of the time) really dense. It has lots of boring parts and you have to micromanage yourself while reading it- like, re-read every chapter, pay attention to every detail. But, it has some suspenseful and action packed parts. The characters are really good and likeable/unlikeable, and the plot is intense, but super complicated. Also, I think this is a great concept for a series. I did not really understand why crows were so importan...more

How did Sherlock Holmes get to be the way that he is - analytical and keenly observant, but totally unemotional? This series by Shane Peacock tries to answer that question. Here in book one we find Sherlock living with his impoverished family in London, victims of discrimination because of his father's Jewish religion. No longer willing to put up with being bullied in school, he roams the streets of the city until one day an Arab accused of murder sees Sherlock as he is being led into the jail a...more

Really liked it! Peacock does this amazing job of creating such a thick palpable Victorian England atmosphere that follows our young Sherlock through the dark and dangerous streets of London tracking down his first killer. What I really loved about this book was that there was something for everyone no matter how old you were. The book tackled a lot of heavy issues such as racism, classism and general inequality in Victorian times but there was always hope amongst the despair. Peacock does a fan...more

I've stated before that Sherlock Holmes isn't my favorite because I never feel like the eventual solution is all that satisfying, but that's just a personal preference on the kind of mysteries I like. I thought the premise for the book was really interesting, but there were several extremely silly and improbable points to the mystery (Sherlock can follow crows through the streets of London to the murder scene...Somehow the crows being present at the murder is key to his understanding of the crim...more

Eye of the Crow by Shane Peacock describes the first case and childhood of one of the most famous literary detectives ever..... Sherlock Holmes. An alley... a murder... crows.... a wrongly accused man. Only one person can solve a case like this and his name is Sherlock Holmes. Born into a socially outcasted family, Sherlock Holmes is not the most fortunate person alive, but he has deductive reasoning that is unbelievable. Will Sherlock Holmes find the guilty party? Or will young Sherlock not liv...more

This author writes in the same style of the Sherlock Holmes author...excellent descriptions that explain much of why the adult Master Holmes is, well, the way he is!

More like 3.5/5.

Cons: It was a bit slow at certain points and I never felt I could really reconcile this boy with the famous Sherlock Holmes. The mystery wasn't told in such a way that you could figure it out yourself; you just had to sit idly on the sidelines and watch Holmes do it. I also felt that (view spoiler)[ Rose's death was an inevitable cliche (hide spoiler)].

Pros: I liked seeing how the clues worked together and the different things that Holmes observed, and I liked the way it was wr...more

I LOVED this book. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. I'd always make up a backround for Sherlock Holmes in my head, that included him living in Yorkshire as a kid, and this was completely different. Yet, I liked it. Sherlock Holmes has to solve his first case, a murder, and it is a twisted labryinth he's walking in now.
I kept thinking this is a really dark book for young adults, but there's nothing overly gory. You'll recognize elements from the original stories, such as an Irene...more

I picked up this book and got a pleasant surprise. I have tried reading the original Sherlock Holmes novels but had trouble getting passed the first few pages. It was a whole new experience when I opened the pages of Eye of the Crow by Shane Peacock. It was an exciting mystery full of interesting characters and curious happenings. The story puts you in the gloomy cobblestone streets of England and in the shoes of a young detective. I recommend this to everyone looking for a good mystery novel an...more

It's very strange reading Sherlock Holmes as a child; if ever there was a fictional character who seemed likely to have sprung fully grown into the world, it's Holmes. Peacock's Sherlock is thus unlike all the other Sherlocks we're familiar with. He's got feelings, for one thing. We see Holmes with his parents, and it's just very unexpected.

The other thing that jumps out about this book is the way Peacock writes London, managing to make it as much of a character in the book as any of the humans....more

Billed as the first case of the The Boy Sherlock Holmes, this author does a pretty good job of establishing why Sherlock Holmes becomes what he is. Sherlock's the son of a Jewish professor who can't find work because he married a rich lady above his class. Sherlock is bitter and believes that his education can't get him where he wants to be (rich and important) because he's a half-Jew. So he skips school and practices his observation skills instead. When a lady is murdered in Whitecastle, Sherlo...more

I felt that this book didn't follow canon very well. The author has Sherlock meeting both Irene Adler and Lestrade at the age of twelve. Irene becomes Sherlock's one and only friend which I think would have had a larger impact on him later in life. Sherlock himself seemed too moody and depressed even when he was actively trying to solve a problem.

If this book had been about a character the author made up I think I would have enjoyed it more. He did a good job with the Victorian setting as well...more

Dr. Watson had never knew about Sherlock Holmes' childhood, he thought he was an orphan. Shane Peacock has created a book that looks at Sherlock's past.
Sherlock lives in an apartment with his mother and father, Rose and Wilber Holmes in London. Sherlock likes to wander the streets, he reads the Police
News or anything related, not wanting to go to school. When one day, a young lady was murdered, Sherlock goes to the murder site, he puts himself, his family,
and his new friend, Irene in danger. As...more

Fresh on the heels of the Enola Holmes series, I was on something of a kick - so when I came across the notion of a story showing us a boy Sherlock Holmes and how he came to be who he was, I was certainly intrigued.

Unfortunately, I had some major issues with the story.

Now, there were parts of it which were interesting and Peacock seems to have given some serious thought to a background story which could possibly lead the adult Holmes to be how he was.

On the other hand, it read like many a u...more

I've had this one sitting around since late last year and I'm now wishing I had picked it up sooner. This was a fascinating look into the childhood of one of literature's favorite characters. Now granted, this may not be the childhood Sir Arthur Conan Doyle envisioned for Sherlock Holmes, but it worked for me.

This was the story of a lonely, introverted young man who would rather be in a town square observing others than in the school he didn't feel comfortable in. He is highly intelligent but do...more

I'm not entirely sure when my obsession with Sherlock Holmes began. The Basil Rathbone movies probably came first. The books I started reading in eighth grade. I was on a school field trip and I read through a collection of the short stories on the bus ride there and back. By the end of college my mother introduced me to a new take on Sherlock by Laurie R. King, The Beekeeper's Apprentice which has grown to a twelve book series.

This summer while waiting for book twelve, The Pirate King (review c...more

Sherlock Holmes is just thirteen when this, his first case, takes him down a path that makes him into a legendary detective. Older fans of the adult Sherlock Holmes may enjoy this series as Shane Peacock has skillfully provided an accurate back story that rings true with many fans of the man Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Young readers will be fascinated with the boy Sherlock Holmes and his uncanny observations, powers of deduction, and his sense of justice.
This dark and brooding story takes place in Lond...more

This was less a mystery than a study of how Sherlock developed his methods. I'm not much of a fan of the adult Sherlock because he's so arrogant and unkind to those around him, not to mention a drug addict. The young Sherlock does not have an addiction yet, and he's not unkind, but he also does not show much emotional depth. This is a surface character. The "mystery" is disappointing because there is nothing for the reader to figure out. Overall, an okay read but not one of my favorites.
