Alison Bruce has produced a masterpiece in The Calling. If you like crime for pure excitement, intrigue, suspense, gore and anticipation of an unpredictable ending then you must simply read this book. DC Goodhew is a fabulous twist on 21st century police character. He is enigmatic, confusing, misunderstood and easily likeable. The author keeps him away from the straight and narrow not for the sake of it but because Goodhew doesn’t think like anyone else.

The icy rain sprayed across the lake in shards of sharp splinters. Kaye’s skin smarted and dribbles of water slid inside her clothes. She was gagged and bound. And the only person who knew where to find her wasn’t coming back…

This was another one of those books that I just couldn’t bring myself to stop reading. That is why I was lying in bed, Kindle in hand (I had to mention it, sorry) squinting trying to read the last few chapters, in the early hours of this morning. This book is also why I couldn’t get to sleep for ages afterwards for being scared. I was actually frightened by this book. (I’ll get to that in a bit though.)

This is Bruce's third book featuring Det. Constable Goodhew. They are set in Cambridge, England and he is quite an appealing young man with an inquiring mind. I enjoyed the first two books. Just finished the third and my problem with the author is that her character is a lowly DC - at the bottom rung of the detective ladder - these are the men and women who get the grunt jobs for the most part, like interminable phone calling, pulling info from the internet, and so forth.

DC Gary Goodhew is a traditional police procedural protagonist. He is thorough, dependable, quirky and very likeable. He also lives in Cambridge, England. If you were wondering what the DC stands for it is Detective Constable for us Yanks on this side of the pond. Trivia note: Constable is the lowest rank of a police officer in England.

I like the series of Alison Bruce, and I like DC Goodhew, because he is rather strange. But this book was somehow harder to read than the previous ones. The main theme are disturbed sexual relationships, and this is probably a kind of antithesis to "shades of grey" (which I didn´t read and never will). Here, some girls get to know a seemingly nice guy. Everything starts good, they fall in love and they really want this relationship. Then the guy changes and starts abusing them and destroying the...more
I loved Cambridge Blue but wasn't so keen on the Siren and therefore was slightly unsure what to expect from The Calling but I wasn't disappointed. DC Gary Goodhew is called in to investigate the disappearance of Kaye Whiting, a young woman who didn't turn up to a family gathering and hasn't been seen since. A young woman makes an anonymous call stating that Kaye isn't the first and won't be the last victim. There is very little for Gary and the team to go on other than this one lead so he start...more
This is the third book in Alison Bruce's Gary Goodhew series and marks a real step change for the author. The first two, Cambridge Blue and The Siren, introduced an engaging and slightly unusual new detective in well-plotted, pacey novels.
The Calling puts Alison Bruce up with the cream of British crime writers, gripping from the first page to the last and getting the reader caught up with the characters and the urgency of their situations. Suspicions are set up, only for twist upon twist to keep...more

I liked this book, a very well written mystery. This is the second DC Gary Goodhew book I’ve read, but I can’t remember which one I read first. The copy I received was an advance uncopyedited edition which was interesting for me, since I’d never read one before. For the most part it was perfect, but there were a few spelling errors and misused or incorrect words. I’m sure the copy editors took care of that, but I barely resisted the urge to get out a red pen and fix it.

The Calling. Get it. Read it. Devour it.
Thanks again to Goodreads for the advance review copy. Goodreads provided me the opportunity to read a talented author I otherwise might not have been familiar with.
If you've not yet read works by Alison Bruce then you're missing out some great writing and a great thrill ride.

I do like the characters Bruce has invented for this series,
even if PC Goodhew's mind isn't as open to me as I'd like.
My preference in mystery/suspense novels is to figure out who
the killer is myself. The story is intricate and there is a prologue
I never quite made sense of. I would have liked this book more if that
information would have been revealed later on. I'm glad it was
sort of up in the air until at least the midpoint but after that,
the plot was "will the killer be caught in time" and not...more

The Calling is the third in the DC Goodhew series, and was published earlier this year by Constable & Robinson. Although The Calling could be read as a stand-alone story, I would certainly recommend that the first two of the series; Cambridge Blue and The Siren are read first. The first two books give the reader a little insight into the enigmatic lead character DC Gary Goodhew.

So this won't be my typical review, as it took me more than four months to actually finish this novel. It's not that The Calling wasn't a good story, it just didn't draw me in as much as I would've liked. I had no problem putting it aside to read about ten other books that did seem to draw me in more. There were a ton of characters in this novel, all of which had their own point of views (POVs). Normally, I don't mind numerous POVs, but there really wasn't any segregation to tell you it had chan...more
I'm conflicted on this book. (And it should be known that I read an ARC, not the final project, but I don't think that impacted my opinion.) On one hand, I enjoyed the read. It was a good mystery, kept me interested and it moved along just fine. On the other hand, I never really felt anything for any of the characters (no strong likes or dislikes, compassion, empathy, etc). I suppose if I came across other books in this series I'd probably read them but they aren't at the top of my to-read list.
Didn't like the beginning and almost put it down--glad I didn't. In thinking about the book after I returned it to the library, I decided the first chapter, and to a lesser extent the prologue, felt tacked on, not integral to the book, false; the characters introduced in the first chapter are either not consistent with how they appear later or are barely mentioned in the rest of the book.
This book is about Detective Gary Goodhew investigating a series of murders in England. This is the third book in a series. It was a little hard to follow and although I liked the detective, he just needed to have more spunk, such a dry little fellow. A pretty good mystery but if you are looking for thrills and chills, it just didn't do it for me. This was an advanced reader copy.

Good Reads First Reads Giveaways
I just received the pre-release of this book and can't wait to start it. I will begin it once I finish Fallen. I think I must have received this from winning Fallen on the First Reads giveaways! Either way I am so excited!
This was a very British mystery involving a series murders. Although the chapters were short, the book was well-written and had enough plot movement to keep you interested in what was going to happen next. This is the 3rd novel in a series; I would probably check out past stories when I have a chance. (Thanks to Mr. Hargett of Random House who sent me an advance copy of this book.)
This is the third in this series about a young detective named Gary Goodhew and the cases he solves. I really enjoyed this book although the second in the series has been my favorite so far. The characters in this series are excellent and the crimes are intriguing. I look forward to reading more books by this author!!
