This new ‘BodyWalkers’ series picks up right at the end of the NightWalkers series; but as the plotline is going in a new direction with new characters (for the most part), it’s not necessary to have read that series to enjoy this one. There is enough background given to quickly get the new reader up to speed on the world. The BodyWalkers are a new and as yet unexplored part of the NightWalkers world, having long been shrouded in secrecy. This was a pretty cool book, imaginative; and with good wordbuilding. This definitely shows the promise of being a very good series. It’s just different enough that it explores new storyline avenues in PNR, while keeping true to the genre.

The BodyWalkers are a race of ancient Egyptians who had discovered a way to reincarnate themselves. When someone enters the in-between, a plane of life and death known as the ‘Ether’; they may be approached by one of these souls promising them new life if the ‘blend’ with them. Due to a civil war between factions of their people (the Templars and the Politic) that caused a great many deaths, there a number of them waiting to find someone to blend with, so that they can begin a new life.

The is what happens to Docia Waverly. During a near death experience (which according to this book weakens the soul), she enters the Ether and is approached by Queen Hatshepsut to host her soul. Docia accepts, and comes back to the world of the living. As she is the soul mate of the King she is met by Ram, the second-in-command to King Menes, who himself is soon to come out of the Ether. Ram is an ancient Egyptian who is blended with a Navy SEAL named Vincent. Ram is to prepare Docia/Hatshepsut for her blended life, and guide her to his king when she is ready and he comes back in his own new blended soul. Then the two will rule the DayWalkers together.

Ram/Vincent has performed the function of preparing his queen to meet her mate, his king, a number of times before. It takes a few weeks for the blended souls to completely come together. This means he spends a good deal of time with the queen. Always before, he has proudly performed this function impeccably and with no problem. Unfortunately, there is a problem this time; Ram/Vincent has fallen in love with Docia, who has yet to fully blend with the queen. Due to occurrence of a magical spell that temporarily suppresses the BodyWalkers, there is a long scene culminating in the first love scene that is strictly between the ‘original lives’, Vincent and Docia. Vincent decides that it is time to change his/Ram’s destiny. This marks a change in the direction of the story. I also got a laugh when Docia described their love play as 'Freaking ménage a everybody. ' I also found it a bit weird when Ram switched to Vincent during suppression, as they are very different from each other. At one point, manly-man Vincent even pokes gentle fun at some of Ram’s metrosexual habits.

There is also the issue of protecting Docia from the Templars until she can be reunited with Menes. The Templars are the Priests an Priestesses of the DayWalkers; and wish to wrest complete control of their people from the king and his followers. They want to stop Docia from meeting up with King Menes. They know that without his queen, he will stay in the Ether and not come back to rule, throwing his people in chaos; and leave them to rule all. There are some fascinating new creatures and paranormal beings introduced in this series. I especially liked SingSing the Djinn and her dragonlets. There is also a nice twist regarding Docia thrown in towards the end of the book; not an unexpected event, but dealt with in a rather innovative fashion.

There was so much more to this story. I found the ancient Egyptian background to be fun and intriguing. Being the 1st book of a new series, there was a lot of wordbuilding to throw at the reader. Although Frank can be a bit wordy on occasion; for the most part, this was tightly written, highly imaginative story. It kept my interest and attention throughout, and engaged my imagination. Ram was a highly fascinating character; larger than life and well drawn, with a rich and colorful past. I like Franks writing style, and I think I’m going to really enjoy this series. I liked the lead couple, I liked their story, and I liked the world they inhabit.

I really liked Docia’s cop brother (Jackson). He had a side storyline that took up a pretty good portion of the book; and I understood why at the end of the story. The book does not end in a major cliffhanger; but it does stop a bit abruptly with many threads left hanging for the next book to pick up. There was a little prologue about several of the characters from past NightWalkers books; so I imagine that at least some of the NightWalkers will have a presence in this series.

Recommended PNR. This is a ‘must read’ for fans of Frank’s work; and for anyone who has never tried Frank before, this is a good place to start. Suffice to say that I liked it, and look forward to continuing the series. I found it intriguing and enjoyable; and a very interesting read. Next up is Forever .

I have enjoyed Jacob (Night Walkers #1) and Drink Of Me (a stand alone novel) by Jacquelyn Frank. Also have a few others in different series sitting on my shelf just waiting to be read. I really have no idea what I just read. It starts off good but when the characters started blending with in each other I was lost. I felt too much was happening. Forbidden by Jacquelyn Frank is one of the best novels I've recently read. I throughly enjoyed all the aspects of the novel and cannot wait until Forever, the second book of The World of Nightwalkers series, comes out.

I should have believed in her. Jacquelyn Frank had never truly disappointed me until “Adam”, the sixth book in the Nightwalkers series, was done. I thought that she was done with the story. Not so and thank goodness. You knew there was more to the story and she has introduced us to that with “Forbidden”. Forbidden introduces you to a part of the Nightwalkers world we did not know existed and she has created a new type of character, Bodywalkers. Bodywalkers are a blend of two souls, one an ancient Egyptian and the other someone from more recent times. I guess the Egyptians knew what they were doing (at least they thought they knew) when they embalmed their dead.

The story begins after the end of “Adam” with Bella and Kestra discussing an ancient scroll found in the Nightwalker Library written in Egyptian hieroglyphs that mentions “ twelve nations”. Since to this point they only know about six maybe seven they figure the others must be extinct since if they were around they would know about them Enter the Bodywalkers... One of the twelve nations.

If you know anything about Egyptian history then you will have a little bit of a head start on the personality/history of some of the characters. Ram/Vincent aka Ramses shares a body with a former Navy SEAL (and who doesn’t love a SEAL), Cleo/Desiree aka Cleopatra shares a body with a prophetess who is fun, quirky and a quick friend to Docia, the main characters of this book. Then we hear about Menes and Hatshepsut, the rulers who are coming back and need a body to inhabit. There are also the non blended characters, Jackson (who the second book “Forever” is about) and Leo his best friend, both of who are former military.

I’m not going to repeat what others have already said about this book, they did such a good job restating all it is about, I’m just going to tell you that if you are a fan of Jacquelyn Frank, and especially of her Nightwalkers this is a book you will want to read. It starts out a little slow but many books that are setting up a new story line do, but once she lays down who is who and what is what you will not want to put the book down until you are done and I am already waiting with bated breath for “Forever” due out in the spring of 2013.

Docia Waverly enjoyed life. Along with her brother Jackson (SWAT Sergeant) they teased and joked. But Jackson had recently suffered a loss and he is all about his sister’s protection since the death of their parents. And the morning Docia wakes up in the morgue following a fatal push in the Hudson River, her death is only the beginning. Following a second attempt on her life, Docia discovers there are others who are targeting her and Jackson is powerless to discover whom.

The Bodywalkers have been looking for suitable candidates for their King Menes and his Queen Hatshepsut, and when the prophetess Cleo guided them to an American woman in the nexus of New York, they knew the time had come. Ram, as the Queen’s guide and protector must find the new host and take her into protective custody in Sanctuary before the others discover her identity. Knowing their Queen is now at her most vulnerable, Ram and the warrior Asikri must protect and defend the woman known as Docia from the faction that decimated them all a century before. But Docia’s blending was taking time and her human personality was trying hard to hold on-she was trying to resist.

Ram and Docia’s relationship began as protector and Queen, but all too soon, their feelings would get caught up in each other, and Ram knew there would be problems when his Queen emerged as the dominant to the host-King Menes was Ram’s best friend, and Ram was falling for the host. But Ram’s host Vincent was also falling for Docia and the stakes were becoming more complicated. With whom had Ram/Vincent fallen in love?

Docia’s easy acceptance of the Bodywalker assimilation was interesting. She had plenty of questions but in her own way she was trying to compare herself to Star Trek and the Borg. Jacquelyn writes this particular story with many references to modern day media and television. The Bodywalker phenomenon and life-cycle is explained in detail including their ability to seemingly live for thousands of years. Many of the Bodywalker’s are the original rulers of ancient Egypt and in a surprising twist Docia will discover that the war between the ancients and the Templar traitors was directly related to issues of subjugation between Bodywalker and the host. Even Ram was once a king. But the Templar traitors have problems of their own. And they were willing to go back to war to stop the King and Queen from ascending the throne once again.

There is a secondary storyline as it pertains Jackson Waverly and the precinct psychiatrist Marissa Anderson. The sexual attraction rolls off both characters until they merge together in a continuous battle of wills. One up-manship never looked so hot. But Jackson’s first concern is the safety and return of his sister, and what he finds is something out of a horror movie. And when he finally finds his sister, it may be too late-for everyone.

Jacquelyn mixes Nightwalkers, Bodywalkers, humans, living gargoyles, dragons, Djynn and humor. The storyline is fast paced, well written and the character development is smooth as it blends ancient Egyptian rulers with modern day men. Jacquelyn Frank does an amazing job re-writing the myths and legends of Ramses, Cleopatra and other well-known and infamous kings and queens. Another amazing new series from a fantastic author.

For me, the ending was predictable, but then again, I am rarely led astray. So, here’s to two lost souls, finally finding each other, once again.

“Forbidden” is part of a paranormal series that gives a nice twist on the concept of reincarnation. It is a fascinating glimpse of certain historical figures even as it blends intriguing interpretations for significant events. The idea that Bodywalkers have boundless wisdom, extraordinary powers and the will of the gods on their side yet are confined to darkness and vulnerable to something as commonplace as orange juice is a study in contrasts. Entertaining asides (such as Docia’s susceptibility to well-stocked closets and the concept of New Mexico’s importance as a nexus not to mention the Mockingbird Lane address that is normally associated with a certain creepy family) provide a little light relief against the evil demonstrated by the fanatics who seek to destroy Docia’s allies. I enjoyed all of the exotic beings detailed including gargoyles and Djynn (and their nikkis vs. niknaks) but the story was a little formulaic for me and not quite as compelling as others in the series that I have read but still a nice glimpse of this intriguing world and the ending definitely makes one anxious for the next in the series.

“Forbidden” by Jacquelyn Frank is set in the world of the Nightwalkers and centers around Docia Waverly who becomes enmeshed in a remarkable struggle that starts with a life changing decision to accept another being into her psyche. There is a complex hierarchy of spirits waiting to be accepted and a predestined relationship between the leaders as well as a major struggle between factions known as the Politic and the Templars which have diametrically opposing viewpoints. The remarkable revelation that some of these spirits have had major historical roles causes Docia to question her decision to share her body with the Bodywalker who is ultimately both an asset and a potential detriment to her future happiness, especially since there are disturbing undercurrents to her interaction with the man who claims that he is to be her personal protector.

The Body Dwellers are the ancient Egyptians who have been mummified, what they didn't realize when they were going through their death rituals that having their bodies buried this way would keep their souls forever attached to earth. Over time they discover that it is possible to regain life from the "ether" if they find a dying body and blend with that person becoming a symbiotic being. Now comes the tricky part.. the Politicos believe in mutual blending.. where each soul, the original and the ancient work together to become a complete being where the Templars, control the body and totally subvert the original. The Body Walkers are in the midst of a civil war where the Templars are doing everything they can to destroy the politicos because they believe in doing so they will regain Ra's pleasure and be able to walk in the sun.. and the Politicos, who currently rule the Body Walkers believe that the Templars are really just out for the money, power and total control... An interesting concept.

In Forbidden we find Dorcia Waverly, after having been pushed off a bridge, being offered a blending by the Queen of the Politicos, the eternal mate of Menses.. She is found by Ram (yes that is Ramses the 2nd and Ms Frank has some fun moments with that) and as Dorcia works on assimilating her Body Walker and running from the bad guys.. She and Ram are drawn towards each other. This causes Ram much distress. Menses is his king, his best friend and the eternal soul mate to the bodywalker Dorcia is carrying.. This has never happened before.

As we watch Ram and Dorcia unravel all everything we, the readers are slowly drawn into what is going to be a wonderful series. It is complex and confusing at times because Ms Frank is introducing us to so much. Each attribute is unique and important to the story it just takes time to figure it all out. Ms Franks does an interesting job writing for both sides of Dorcia. She tells the story of Dorcia the woman falling for Ram (Vincent is his human name), Dorcia, the human learning about blending with another soul. Dorcia, the human dealing with dying and waking up not dead. And finally, Dorcia the sister dealing with a brother who raised her and is mad with grief in trying to find her. Then we meet Dorcia's Bodywalker, Hepsatuth (sp) except..

As I said there is so much going on and as the story grows and develops it is going to be very very interesting...

My only complaint with Ms Franks is she has a tendency to not finish a series.. so I hope as this series grows we get to see it come together and tell a complete story. Her writing as usual is superb and this story shows so very much promise.. I suggest you all get a copy and just enjoy the ride

This is a new series about Nightwalkers branching off from the older one about Bodywalkers and I have to say I was confused. I have not read the other series and I just had no idea who these characters were and why they were doing what they were doing.

That being said it was an interesting story if not a bit too far fetched for me. I guess I should have realized that this was about a reincarnation from long ago using another body to come back to the world...more

You know when someone seems to have a personality change overnight, or a "mid-life crisis? Jacquelyn Frank has come up with a new species which can explain most if that. Those people who change so abruptly are now sharing their bodies with ancient Egyptians.

Frank spins a new series off of her Night Walkers series using characters in the original series to introduce a few ancient species that had been forgotten by the Demons, Druids, Vampires, Sirens, etc. The two that figure most prominently in the new series are Bodywalkers, a disembodied group of spirits who enter a symbiotic relationship with a human who "dies." The disembodied form enters the body of the host and salvages it.

The events that precipitate Docia's "death" and resurrection as a blending life force are shocking, as is much of the violence in the book. Some of it is perpetrated by humans and some by the Bodywalkers against each other and humans. It's a familiar battle between clerical and secular rule.

There is a lot of comic relief, which is good. Otherwise the situation gets pretty dire. Another species introduced her is the Gargoyles, protective sentinels for the Bodywalkers.

This series starts off in Sauguerties, New York. It's pretty near where I grew up and is in the Catskill Mountains. In the book's front matter Frank, as a former area resident, does apologize to the town for taking liberties. Frank has painted Sauguerties as a community where crime and crack are prevalent. But, in reality it has a lower crime rate than average and only employed 14 police officers when the town website I checked was last updated (between 2009 to 2012).

Here's what the CityRating.com said:

Saugerties Town crime statistics report an overall downward trend in crime based on data from 10 years with violent crime decreasing and property crime decreasing. Based on this trend, the crime rate in Saugerties Town for 2012 is expected to be lower than in 2010.

The city violent crime rate for Saugerties Town in 2010 was lower than the national violent crime rate average by 94.89% and the city property crime rate in Saugerties Town was lower than the national property crime rate average by 51.23%.

In 2010 the city violent crime rate in Saugerties Town was lower than the violent crime rate in New York by 94.73% and the city property crime rate in Saugerties Town was lower than the property crime rate in New York by 26.08%.

I could find no evidence of the type of crime she writes into the story as being part of the area. As I was from the area, this struck me as odd, which is why I looked it up. Why use an actual place and then totally fictionalize it? It is distracting to many potential readers. This is a pet peeve of mine. Other readers, and writers I've discussed this with agree that it's bothersome but Frank isn't the first writer I've read who has done it.

If a story is placed in an actual location that is known and currently accessible then, please, make it more or less factual. Otherwise the disparities are at best comical, and at worst damaging to the location's reputation — for a small city to be portrayed as crime ridden doesn't do much for tourism. Granted not every book will have a blockbuster's impact and while it may be an issue for me, it may not be one for you. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT REAL PLACES BEING FICTIONALIZED BY AN AUTHOR?

If in previous novels Frank's prose has tended toward torrid this book seems to have had the purple prose scaled back slightly. In the series from which FORBIDDEN has spun off Frank has explored those tropes where something makes love between parties not just impossible but forbidden. Sometimes the reason is a law, like demons not having their way with humans. Other times it is personal history or not dating your friend's sister. In this case it's a combination of a bodyguard not making it with the body he's guarding, and that he understands the body he's guarding to be that of his queen, and his King's beloved wife. Oops!

At one point Ram claims his feelings are treasonous. But then he discusses the relationship as being a choice with each new embodiment. There are conflicts like that throughout the story as ancient beings clash with modern laws and new personalities. Some of the relationship between Ram and Docia feels rehashed; a replay of Jacob and Bella's. A few of the characters seem annoying to me — I found the female protagonist, Docia, dense, oblivious, and occasionally stupid. I found her brother equally dense, with the addition of being overbearing and rude. I didn't quite believe the bond between her, her brother Jackson and their friend Leo. How an over protetive brother would let his sister drive a car so broken down that it rarely ran is beyond me. If he had just helped with that the whole book would have had an entirely different start.

If you have enjoyed the Nightwalker series, or you enjoy pretty darn steamy stuff, this first in the new Bodywalker series, will probably be entertaining for you. If you live in the Catskills you may find Frank's portrayal of the region amusing, or not.

It was just a bit busy and predictable. The hero and heroine intended in this story are Docia a sweet little spitfire and Ram the darkly handsome, ancient Bodywalker. I liked the duo, I really did. They weren’t my problem. It was the seemingly endless other storylines mixed in. There must have been a way for Frank to better explain the world we as readers just stepped into. I know she’s capable of this because even with the intermingling of species and storylines in the Nightwalker series I never felt this distracted. I found myself saying, fuck just get to the point and move on.

The story also seemed a bit slow, even though everything transpired over only a few days. Again, I believe this was because, and maybe it’s just me, of too many side stories happening at once. And yet, at the same time the story seemed slow it was full of shit happening. And then it just came to a very predictable end. I’m not one to give spoilers in my reviews, nor do I explain the plot – sorry read what the author tells you about it for that, read my review for my opinion.

So, with that being said. Ram, seemed super hot – totally fuckable. Docia, I dug her. She held her own, she wasn’t whiney or annoying. Everything else - too much! The story of Docia’s brother Jackson (obviously going to be the next in the series) was just a little too expected and unrealistic for me. So I say read the book if you’re a fan of Jacquelyn Frank. It was a good read and the more it went on, the more I liked it. I also think the series has great potential. I really liked the idea behind the Bodywalkers and their abilities. I just think this one needs a bit of tweaking. So if I could give stars I’d say 3.5 maybe a 4. But I would say to give it a try and see for yourself.

This is my second read by J. Frank and liked it, but I wasn't overly impressed with the story. This is a spin off from the world of the Nightwalker series. The new beings, the Bodywalkers are ancient Egyptian who take over the body or share a body with present day humans who have died. These humans are at times given the choice to share their body with the walkers.

Well, I know why only one person put this as a favorite series. This will be one I abandon.

Jacquelyn Frank has several series working. All of them are night walkers. Those who cannot walk in the sun. This series is about souls from Egypt (Cleopatra etc.) jumping into & sharing soul space with humans who almost or do die & come back to life. I just finished reading Forbidden, the first book of the Bodywalkers series. I love the concept of the species of Bodywalkers. Very different from most other Paranormal stories.

There are enemies both human and Bodywalker that would like to destroy Docia before she comes into her full power. Ram must protect her, will he continue to protect her when shocking revelations are revealed?

This is a great start to a new series from Jacquelyn Frank. It was fun, exciting, fascinating and left you wanting more. Although this story is connected to the Nightwalkers, it held its own with its unique new characters. We even have Djinn and gargoyles too! All around great read, 4 stars

This book is starting to grow on me. I was really struggling and then quit reading it all together, but have come back to it, between work and just being busy it feels like it’s taken forever to finish. I think the reason I struggled with this so much was because it’s listed as “The World of Nightwalkers” which I assumed would have all my favorite characters from the “Nightwalkers” series….if you haven’t read this series, it’s definitely a “must read” all 6 books in this series are just AMAZING...more

First off- I'm not going to summarize any of the plot points. I feel that enough people do that where I don't have to do it.

What worked for me? I really liked the concept of The Bodywalkers. That was something that I find intriguing and a novel concept. I don't believe I've read that in any other story. I enjoyed some of the characters - Jackson was amazing. Marissa could be pretty decent. I'd like to learn a lot more about Leo though! Ram was ok- I did not love him, nor did I hate him.

I didn't like the time frame that this book progressed through- it was literally like only two days long. I'm not exactly sure what time frame I'd like, but it felt rushed to me. Okay, I admit it, I'm picky. But I can't help it. I've read all of the author's books- I wouldn't mind going back to the world that Drink of Me was set in....okay, sorry, off topic.

Overall, while I found some things that I'm not really sure I cared for, I did like the book. I don't think there were any places where it was dragging me kicking and screaming (yes, I've read some books where I've had to plow through hoping that I'd eventually get to an interesting spot!). I did want to pout a bit at the ending. Mainly because I wanted to know Jackson more and definitely Leo. But I don't want a cozy family of Bodywalkers though. Yet I still hope to see more of Leo!

Will I read the next book? Yes, I will. I don't know how many more that I could read before I expect the Bodywalkers to actually coexist happily in the Nightwalker world though! But the beginning of the book allowed for much expansion of this wonderful world. And I will more than likely read every single one that comes out.

Could you read this as a stand alone book? Yes, I don't think it absolutely necessary that you know who Bella and Kestra are. I would suggest that you're missing some very good reads by not reading the Nightwalker series though.

Jacquelyn Frank is another new author for me and I thought I would check out Forbidden. One of my good online friends loves her and her Nightwalkers series. I was really excited to get started on this one.

I loved the idea of Bodywalkers, however and the blending of the original soul with the designated “old soul” (the Bodywalker). It was a different aspect of paranormal. One of the things that threw me off was that they were not explained right away, so I felt exactly as Docia did, lost. I was really excited to get started on this one.

I loved the idea of Bodywalkers, however and the blending of the original soul with the designated “old soul” (the Bodywalker). It was a different aspect of paranormal. One of the things that threw me off was that they were not explained right away, so I felt exactly as Docia did, lost. She has had a tragedy happen to her, and she lands in the Ether and given a choice of whether she would like to live or not. She chooses yes, and wakes up to find herself in the middle of their “alternate” world and an old soul residing inside of her. The Bodywalker essentially blends with the original until they become a carbon of each other.

“You have left normal humanity and mortality behind today, Docia. Today you have become a Bodywalker. You came to the brink of death, weakening the protective walls of your KA…your soul…enough to allow the KA of another to blend with yours.”

I liked Docia/ Queen Hatshepsut and Ramses/Vincent, I just didn’t like them together. Docia/Queen was fated to be with King Menes when he came back from the Ether into the mortal world through his original. Meanwhile Ram was fighting the intense attraction between himself and Docia. He knew that it was disloyalty and treason to fall in love with his King’s Queen. Although he couldn’t’ understand why, as over the centuries he had never felt an inkling of feeling or attraction towards her other than friendship, it was happening and happening at an intensity he had never felt before.

The author wanted you to feel that these four souls were connected to each other instantly and it was supposed to feel intense and meant to be. The only time I felt any chemistry between these characters was when their Bodywalkers were suspended and you had just Docia and Vincent. I felt the connection between the two original mortals. Docia was a quirky little thing, was the Queen was more polished and assertive. Vincent was an incredible hot Seal, while Ramses was also very polished and philosophical, a king in his own right. There were moments that it seemed there was no rhyme or reason to which soul was more dominant.

“So…you…” “Love you? No. it is beyond love, if such thing is possible, Docia. It has to be. Two souls inside me. Two souls inside you. All connected. All knowing at their very core that we belong together.”

I will say that there was INTENSE sexual tension between her brother Jackson and his love interest. There was sparks every time those two hit a room together, even when they tried to hide it behind anger and disgust.

I liked the book well enough, but I do not know if I liked the book enough to try one of her others. The author’s writing style was easy to read. It just seemed like a really long read to me, too many details and it was a bit confusing in places. There was not a lot of action or romance to fill in between all the details the author provided us with and the chemistry between the characters was meh. You did not get a true sense of chemistry and action until close to the end of the book. In addition, it seemed like there was too many main characters. Half the book was spent with Docia and her body walker as the heroine, and Ram/Vincent as the “hero,” but then the other half of the book dealt with Jackson (Docia’s brother), his love interest, and his search for his sister. Most of the book I felt like Jackson was actually our hero instead of Ram/Vincent.

I must admit by the time we got to the point where the four souls were captured and suspended I was ready for the book to be over with. I even thought about not finishing but the one saving grace for this book was the twist towards the end. The last couple of chapters really carried the book in my opinion. If I had to choose a character from this book that I really liked and would read more about it would be Jackson, I devoured his chapters while skimming through the others.
