In the words of Arnold's first major role, Conan:

"It's all you'll ever need."

This book is comprehensive. Seriously. It covers almost everything you need to know about form, function, and the role and interplay between working out, diet, supplements, injuries, and training routines. While other books may go more in depth, the breadth and width of this book's coverage is just staggering.

While there is a focus more on competition bodybuilding later i...more

This book really surprised me; I picked it up at the library, on a lark, to see how it differed from my current gym philosophy. I was shocked to find a thoughtful, well researched, and balanced approach to weight training that didn't focus exclusively on bulk, but rather form and to some extent one man's personal journey to achieve the height of his field.

Arnold is strangly free of hype or bombast in these pages, and rarely does he even mention his successes. There is a naked humilty ...more

Arnold Schwarzenegger's guide to the sport of body building is a very comprehensive tool to those looking to better their health utilizing weight training as an anchor for their transformation. The book is more than just a list of exercises or workouts, but also covers the history of the sport, as well as giving readers tips for beginning their transformations, even tutoring the most experienced gym-rat through new ideas to battle plateaus. Along with workout information, the book touches upon n...more

This book is a must for all weightlifters. Even though the photo's are from the early 90's the tips are straight from the golden horses mouth. Doods' nasty with the iron. Recognize royalty when you see it.

This is a constant reference and is dubb...more

For less than the price of one hour with a personal trainer I got some of the most helpful advice I ever have received. I particularly liked the tips that corrected what I was doing wrong with certain exercises I had been doing for years. The plateau I had hit with my workouts vanished after reading this. Actually, I'm reading it for the second time in a month to pick up the pointers I missed the first time around. There's a reason it is rated so highly on Goodreads and everywhere else - it's an...more

I read the first 1/5 of this book through, and it was a lot of fun to hear about Arnold's coming of age in the bodybuilding world and think about how they may have affected his entire career. It was also interesting to read about the history of bodybuilding in general and how much advancement has been made over the past 100 years. Bodybuilders have really learned a lot about how the body works in general. The latter 4/5 of the book is primarily pictures of famous bodybuilders, a reference of ...more

Recommends it for: anyone.
I originally purchased this, through the recommendation's of a friend, as a strictly reference book for different exercises. I ended up reading it from cover to cover! It is surprisingly well written and, though you get the sense there is some editing going on in the background, it really feels like Arnold is right there beside you, talking you through the different chapters in the book! His passion and excitement translate through the written word and you find yourself wanting to rush to the...more

Most comprehensive and informative book on the subject of bodybuilding. Detailed instructions on several exercises for each muscle group. Anatomical diagrams and actual photos of each exercise. Contains all the knowledge one would need to transform his/her body and create an individualized diet and exercise program. Also includes a short biography of Arnold. Very interesting.

About as comprehensive book on bodybuilding as you will ever find. Some of the routines though, are ridiculously outdated and could not be recommended to any NATURAL bodybuilder.

Love the book though. High quality photography and every aspect of bodybuilding is covered.

Recommended to anyone with an interest in bodybuilding, but be advised that some of the advice and routines are very dated and not recommended.

The definitive--and most comprehensive--work on bodybuilding available, written by on of the most successful atheletes in the sport's history. If you're even a little bit serious about bodybuilding, buy this book. A very helpful reference that you will return to again and again.

Contains a lot of useful information that I use constantly. You can just open the book to any page and find something interesting. But beware as some of the techniques described in this book have been proven false, ineffective or even dangerous. But still a very informative read.

I am impressed that Arnold co-wrote a book, and a good one at that. Nice descriptions and pictures, simple and to the point (though sometimes too simple), covers a heck of a lot, and gives insight regarding the man himself.

This is a really interesting read. I didnt read it from cover to cover, because its the size of a phone book. It has every workout from every angle you can imagine. Including, many of Arnold's original workouts.

Anyoby interested in getting in shape, whether it be losing a couple pounds or building insane amounts of muscle, NEEDS this book. It works. It REALLY works. This book is how i dropped 70+ lbs a few years ago.

Growing up, my dad was a powerlifter (like a body builder but focused on raw lifting power as opposed to sculpting the body into a perfectly symmetric form) so I pulled down his copy of Arnold's tome and poured over it. In college, I used it as a reference while lifting weights and now, years later, I have the revised edition on my bookshelf and refreshed my knowledge before I started lifting again this year.

As it's for 'modern' bodybuilding, the examples are frequently with machines...more

Not as much an encyclopedia as a biography of Arnold and a summary of how bodybuilding got to where it is, that also touches upon the basics of most excercises.

Amit

A surprisingly enjoyable book! I never thought much of body building before, but I've developed an appreciation for it. It's incredibily exhaustive, and I could see it being useful to almost anyone with an above average interest in fitness. Arnold's personality is amazingly strong and comes through in every line in a really entertaining way.
Joe Wisniewski
Contrary to what most might think ... this is not just a bookd for iron heads. It is close to a kinesiology text for a med school student. Say what you want about Arnold, but he generally knows what he is talking about and in this case, it is simply a wealth of knowledge that you simply will not find anywhere else.

Recommends it for: anyone looking to get buff
After slogging through too many muscle mags, riddled with questionable supplement ads, this book was a refreshingly dense well of information on how to approach getting fit with weights. Who knew Arnold -- with the help of a co-authoer -- could be so engaging!

It has everything you need to know about bodybuilding. It is complete from the correct diet to the putting body oil and getting a tan during a competition. Will definitely help aspiring bodybuilders and shows a variety of work-outs.

In terms of bodybuilding (not politics) Arnold is my hero. Some of his methods I disagree with, but this is very informative and inspirational.
Ravdeep Singh
Covers pretty much all the basics of bodybuilding and nuitrion. Good to have in your collection. But, don't depend on it alone.
Eliot
Not meant to be a page turning classic, but very effective as a true encyclopedia of bodybuilding and the history of the sport.
Nick Mecham
The most comprehensive, informational, and complete book to learn about weight lifting and the benefits thereof.
