Old Loves Die Hard is the second book in Lauren Carr's Mac Faraday series. I reviewed the first book earlier - It's Murder My Son. Well, the second book is at least as good as the first! Mac's ex-wife comes shows up, wreaking havoc on the new life he's made in Deep Creek Lake; her death only increases the confusion.

Carr continues to write interesting characters. Some you want to get to know, some you probably don't. She keeps the plot twisting and turning so guessing the bad guy is quite a chall...more

This is a great series! In this second book Mac Faraday has to deal with his ex wife who comes to town asking him to take her back after the man she left him for leaves her, then that same man ends up dead in Mac Farady's personal suite at his hotel. Now Mac has to find the killer to clear his name and the reputation of the Spencer Inn where the murders took place.

I fell in love with Mac Faraday and all his friends in Shades of Murder. So, when the opportunity arose to read more of Lauren Carr's books, I jumped at the opportunity. I picked Old Loves Die Hard and found out what a mess it can be when your ex-wife and her ex-lover are found murdered in your penthouse. It's messy.

Mac Faraday is a great character. I love Columbo, Jessica Fletcher, and Perry Mason, but Mac Faraday is quickly becoming one of the coveted detectives in my book. All of the characters in Lauren Carr's books are amazing and so well-developed. None of them are over the top or extremely shallow. Even the ones you learn to hate have depth to them. Her character development makes me envious.

There is a little humor in her works which I love. You read the story and it is not just blood and death. These are people you find yourself drawn to or despising. But the best part of all is that it is a real mystery.

I love watching mystery shows trying to figure out who done it. It drives my family crazy because I figure it out so early in the shows. Lauren Carr keeps me in the dark in such a way that I don't know who did it until right before they reveal the murderer. Do you know how hard that is to do to me? Very!

All of these are set at a pace that is not too fast but far from slow. Typically, I hate it when a writer has to keep explaining a person's past, like how Mac Faraday came to have acquired his wealth after being a cop for many years. In these books, they are done in a manner where a new reader can get the information without rewriting her first book. It's short and sweet but necessary for those new to her works.

Lauren Carr has created a character in Mac Faraday that will go down in murder mystery hall of fames in the homes and hearts of many readers.

My hat off to Lauren Carr who writes entertaining mysteries that will get you hooked from the very beginning and will not release you until you know the full story. If you love murder mysteries, you have to Lauren Carr's books out.

Mac does not want another chance after 20 years of marriage his wife kicked him out of his house. She got the house and he got the credit cards bills he did not charge. Then right after he was told he inheirited millions when mystery writer Robin died. Mac was her son that she gave up for adoption 40 years ago. Mac took his ex-wife up to the 5 star inn he also inhierted to check her into. Mac found out at that time that he actually had his own penthouse suite that only for his & his guests use. Before Mac could take her up his ex-wife Christine took off when she saw the guy who she left Mac for and lived with till her money was gone Stephen and had a yelling fight with. After Mac took Christine up to the suite made arrangement to have breakfast with her in the morning when she was sober. When she was not down to meet Mac for breakfast he went up to get her and found Stephen dead and then he found Christine dead in the tub. Even with Mac working as a homicide detective for 20 years he made many mistakes before he called the murder in. Mac was now a suspect in the death of his ex-wife and her lover. It was a media circus that the murder took place in a 5 star inn in the owner's private suite who just inhierited millions 3 months ago. David the new Police chief is also Mac half brother though they just met months ago. David won't answer Mac's phone calls. Mac finds out some of whats going on from the man who is in charge of security. The more they find out why Stephen was here and staying at Mac's inn the more questions they have. The more they find the more dead bodies show up. Someone even takes shots at both David and Mac. Thier is humor in this mystery and part of it is with Mac's dog that he was left. Very smart dog who was a thief. I am sad that I have read all the Mac Faraday mysteries that are out. I look forward to reading more in the future I hope. If you are millionaire Mac Faraday you handle it with finesse, intelligence and hopefully without too much fanfare. But, that would be in the real world and this is his world filled with one dog named Gnarly who was not happy to see Christine, one close friend named Archie and one police chief named David who left Mac to handle her on his own. But, what happens next? First, she fawns all over him, cries, weeps and confesses her sins blaming them on someone else. Then, he takes her to his Inn to sleep it off and she walks smack dab into the man who dumped her and his girlfriend threatening to murder him. Well, it gets better. Neatly tucked away in a private sweet with only the staff being able to access her room, he leaves her there to spend the night waiting to deal with her in the morning. That would be ideal but this is Old Loves Die Hard by Lauren Carr and you guessed it: the only thing on the room service menu today is not coffee, tea or eggs just a double murder served up in the true style of a real murder mystery in the suite with tons of not red sauce but blood to go around. So, who are the victims none other than his ex=wife Christine and her ex-lover Stephen. Poor Mac, trying to adjust to his millions and having helped solved multiple murders that resulted in his half=brother becoming Chief of Police in Deep Creek Lake, now this. Our retired detective will now work feverishly to find out who killed these two people in his own Inn, clear his family name and hopefully connect more with Archie.

Mac for the first time is totally unwound, taints the crime scene, sick to his stomach and has to deal with telling his son and daughter about his ex-wife’s murder. Added to that his daughter Jessica stayed at her mom’s home only to find that some broke in. Motive for murder yet to be discovered. Did she really kill Stephen too early to call?

While Mac is trying to find out more about the case Stephen’s wife Natasha shows up with her companion. Learning more about his life, his career moves and his financial situation he uncovers some interesting information about what he was investigating and his relationship with his ex-wife. Stephen’s family is rich but he managed to live off of the women he slept with until they ran out of money or he just moved on. Using his federal credit card to pay for his stays at the Inn including his final one, Stephen was man who used women for his own selfish purpose. But, there is much more as we learn about Christine’s financial situation, how Stephen was responsible for depleting it and the fact that Mac did not know she was in Spencer even before she appeared on his doorstep. Questioned by David the Chief of Police brought to light information about the murder, the fact that someone copied her identity and went to a lot of trouble to duplicate her appearance and make it look like she killed Stephen. Dinner in her room, repeatedly calling Stephen’s cell phone and then having him come to her room, where he winds up dead. How convenient for the killer to frame her? How this is done well you need to read that for yourself? Just how depressed was Christine enough that she might have been considered incompetent. But, the plot thickens as the spotlight shines on Stephen himself, his past transgressions, the murders who might have gotten away with and Mac’s in-laws. Everyone wants a piece of what was left of Christine’s meager pie from her sisters who are fighting over a beat up car to a lake house that partly in Mac’s name to anything that is not nailed down. You would think they were not rich, but they are which is one reason that Christine left Mac for greener pastures in order to keep up not with the Jones’s but with her sisters. Added into the mix is the mysterious maid that appears and then disappears without a clue. But, one smart Security chief named Hector solves that puzzle but there is much more. Poor Mac and Archie try to have a quiet evening only to receive the wisdom, unasked for advice of his lawyer and hotel manager. When will he ever have some peace and alone time with Archie?

When Mac is blindsided by a Black SUV and David winds up with a dislocated shoulder and Gnarly once again saves the day, he winds up in the hospital returns home to his in-laws arguing, coming face to face with ex-cop hired for murder and then the pieces begin to fall into place. Throughout the novel one theme is current and strong and that all of the murders are connected to Mac’s old cases. Just how you won’t believe and who is behind them even more startling. Murders allowed going free for more than just technicalities, one man claiming to belong to a rich family and a family caught in a web of lies, deceit, murder, mayhem and old-fashioned vigilante justice. Who is behind this vigilante group? A reviewer’s sources are sacred and kept secret just like those of the police or new reporters. Never reveal your sources, who did it or how you figured or did not figure it out. Let’s just say this is one ending you will never be able to unravel by yourself unless you are Mac Faraday or of course our real sleuth: Gnarly. One smart and clever dog who has a sixth sense and real nose for murder, finding the criminals and remembering their scents, once again author Lauren Carr has created a compelling, humorous, heartfelt, mystery thriller that will throw even Perry Mason or the teams from CSI off the real killer’s trail until she reveals them the truth at the end. Will Spencer, Maryland and the Inn ever be a save place to visit and have dinner? Will poor Mac and Archie ever be alone? Wait until the next novel comes out and maybe you will find out if our retired police detective turned sleuth/ aka Private Eye solves another murder or just enjoys the rich life.

'Old Loves Die Hard" by Lauren Carr started off as a page turner but I soon got bogged down. If the author had found a way to cut down on the suspects and the intricate of the crimes, I would be giving this book a much higher rating.

When Mac discovers the bodies of first Stephen and then his ex-wife he finds himself in the frame as a murder suspect but figuring out who is really responsible won't be as straightforward as expected.

Old loves Die Hard is another cleverly plotted and engaging mystery by Carr. Familiar characters including Mac, Archie (will they or won't they?) and David return along with the irrepressibly charming Gnarly who has learnt a few new tricks.
This story provides us with a bit more background about Mac as he deals with his ex-wife's death and her family. Mac is very affected by Christine's death, despite her unreasonable behaviour both during their marriage and after it, yet he had sincerely loved her. Rattled by the circumstances, Mac's reasoning isn't as level headed as it usually is, especially when he is excluded from the investigation and considered a possible suspect.
The case is further complicated for Mac by multiple suspects, secrets, and yet more deaths. There seems to be links to Mac's past as a detective in the city, Christine's sisters aren't telling him everything and someone is taking pot shots at him. There are twists and turns as Mac and the police identify and eliminate suspects, following avenues of inquiry that seem to go nowhere and others the go in circles. The story is crowded with overlapping plot threads but they all unravel nicely.
While I thought Carr showed the strength in storyline, pacing and character development that was evident in the first book of the series, I did feel this story lacked the editorial polish of its predecessor. There are instances of awkward phrasing and structural flaws that are distracting and the dialogue and action scenes aren't quite as tight.
There is danger, intrigue, humour and romance in Old Loves Die Hard, creating an entertaining and engaging mystery. I would recommend you read the first book It's Murder, My Son before this, though Old Loves Die Hard is not unworkable as a stand alone it is enriched by the familiarity with the characters. I know Lauren is planning on releasing the third in the series, Color of Murder, this year and I am looking forward to Mac's next case.(less)

Mac is starting to adjust to his new life when his ex-wife, Christine, shows up at his door drunk. I had wondered when the ex would come around now that he had a mansion and the money to keep it. Mac quickly takes her to the Spencer Inn so she is out of his hair. He barely walks in the lobby when the man his former wife left him for, Stephan Maguire of those Maguires, is walking past with a young woman on his arm. Christine promptly makes a scene and attacks the man. Mac and the hotel manager practically drag her into Mac's reserved suite to stay.

Mac finds out the next morning that his private suite at the Spencer Inn is now a murder scene with the bodies of both Christine and a viciously stabbed Stephan Maguire, putting a serious black eye on Mac's 5 star hotel. Interestingly Maguire, a lawyer wanting to climb to success, had files of many of Mac's old homicide cases and a note to talk to Mac about one of them. At first Christine is thought to have killed Maguire and then during her cleaning up she slips in the shower, hits her head and accidentally dies. But evidence shows there was a third person in the room. Then Mac is suspect.

Mac is an enjoyable main character as a man who didn't know his birth mother until she died and now is adjusting to wealth...and not being a homicide cop anymore. He is tested in this book by his ex-wife's relatives, a former defense attorney, and a former judge show up for a collision of his former life with his new. Archie, the love interest, has been a favorite of mine since the first book and we get to know her a bit better. The other characters are finely drawn as being not all bad, but definitely not all good either creating a multi-layered cast. And then there is Gnarly, the German Shepherd that once had been military trained. He gets into trouble because he isn't challenged any longer. Gnarly even knows sign language as part of his former training, which saves Mac's life at one point. This character is worth his weight in gold.

The plot itself was complex and gave a touch of crime drama to this cozy without loosing the cozy charm. I liked that we see a little of the police detective side without it being dark or gruesome. There is suspense and twists that keep the pages turning. The killer is a surprise although I had a good idea of the motive, and the final confrontation with the killer felt natural and even realistic.

This is a cozy mystery that is character and plot driven. I think Ms. Carr is just hitting her stride and I suspect that we shall see each new book surpass the last. I particularly recommend to not only cozy fans but those who like a good police detective story without the guts, gore, or darkness usually associated with them.

After the last book, I mentioned that I didn't really connect with the main character at first, this book brings him the life in a personal way as he addresses a murder that touches his past. Once again complications and coincidences bring enough muddy the investigation but heighten the intrigue of the story. I do wish Mac would get a clue about Gnarly; by now the detective should understand that as frustrating as the dog is, it is because he is so smart. On to the next one.

Carr must have a very devious mind to have thought up the twists and turns of this book's plot. The sheer amount of mayhem is a bit boggling, but Carr's characters are so well drawn you can almost see the movie in your mind.
