Old Loves Die Hard is the second book in Lauren Carr's Mac Faraday series. I reviewed the first book earlier - It's Murder My Son. Well, the second book is at least as good as the first! Mac's ex-wife comes shows up, wreaking havoc on the new life he's made in Deep Creek Lake; her death only increases the confusion.

Carr continues to write interesting characters. Some you want to get to know, some you probably don't. She keeps the plot twisting and turning so guessing the bad guy is quite a chall...more

I REALLY EJOYED THIS BOOK I WISH IT HAD MORE ROMANCE BUT THAT DID NOT HURT THE STORY AT ALL. LOVE ALL THE CHARACTERS THEY ARE VERY FUNNY AT TIMES. BUT THE SCENE STEALERS WERE GNARLY & OTIS, GNARLY IS MY FAVORITE CANINE HERO SINCE LASSIE, RIN TIN TIN AND BENJI I'VE ROOTED FOR ALL OF THEM. THE STORY IS FILLED WITH MANY TWIST & TURNS I LOVED TRYING TO FIQURE OUT WHERE THEY WERE HEADED. YEAH GNARLY!!!! EVEN THOUGH I AM A CAT LOVER.

This is a great series! In this second book Mac Faraday has to deal with his ex wife who comes to town asking him to take her back after the man she left him for leaves her, then that same man ends up dead in Mac Farady's personal suite at his hotel. Now Mac has to find the killer to clear his name and the reputation of the Spencer Inn where the murders took place.

The second book in the Mac Faraday mystery series, Old Loves Die Hard is just as enjoyable as the first. It is another satisfying murder mystery chock full of fascinating characters.

This time around, Mac Faraday’s ex-wife comes calling, bringing a lot of old baggage and some dead bodies, including hers. Mac becomes a suspect in his ex-wife’s murder, but ends up investigating the killing. He delves into his past, both personal and professional, to find answers and the killer.

A few months after Mac Faraday received his inheritance from his birth mother, Queen of Mystery Robin Spencer, his ex-wife showed up at his door wanting a reconciliation. When she and the man she "traded up for" are murdered in Mac's penthouse suite at the Spencer Inn, Mac and Chief of Police David O'Callaghan not only have to solve the murder, but clear Mac's name.

This is a solid second installment in the Mac Faraday series. The relationship between Mac and Archie is growing and the personalit...more

I fell in love with Mac Faraday and all his friends in Shades of Murder. So, when the opportunity arose to read more of Lauren Carr's books, I jumped at the opportunity. I picked Old Loves Die Hard and found out what a mess it can be when your ex-wife and her ex-lover are found murdered in your penthouse. It's messy.

Mac Faraday is a great character. I love Columbo, Jessica Fletcher, and Perry Mason, but Mac Faraday is quickly becoming one of the coveted detectives in my book. All of the characte...more

Yes, Lauren, I picked up on the irony of Mac thinking he had to wait to payday to replace his grinding brakes... For those of you who did not read the first book in the Mac Faraday series, let me just share that Mac inherited tons of money from his biological mother. She had been a well-known and successful writer of mystery novels before she died. Earlier, she had arranged to meet her son, who had been adopted. Now, though he still was not used to not having to wait for a payday, he lived in a...more

Review:Old Loves Die Hard by Lauren Carr
5 STARS Well now this week have read all 3 Mac Faraday novels and have really enjoyed them. They are full of twists and turns you might guess some but you won't guess all its secrets. They are clean as in no sex scenes or any vulgar langage but a lot of murder. This book Old Loves Die Hard is the second Mac Faraday novel. Mac is enjoying a visit with Archie and his half brother David when his ex-wife knocks at his door drunk asking for a second chance. Ma...more

Mac Faraday, Archie Monday, and Gnarly are again working their magic to solve a murder in Spencer.

Spencer, Maryland, was hit again with a double murder inside the penthouse at Mac's Inn. This sequel brought in new characters that included high profile attorneys and judges who may be murderers. The twists and turns involved in the solving of the murder is quite creative. Lauren Carr is a great mystery writer. This book gives you more background about the characters that you loved in her first boo...more

Old Loves Die Hard – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat

“We did have a good marriage,” she choked out. “If I hadn’t made that one mistake—” Clasping her arms around his neck she tried to kiss him.

While diving backwards to dodge her lips, he released her hold on his neck. “You threw me out of my own home.” He folded her hands in her lap.

“You were always such a gentle man.” Each word came out slowly and deliberately in her effort to appear in control.

“Funny,” Mac said, “tha...more

In Old Loves Die Hard, Lauren Carr continues the adventure of Mac Faraday, retired detective and heir to a fortune, with a story that weaves together past and present. Carr crashes Mac’s past into his future just as he’s getting comfortable with his new role in life. Carr explores how the past created the present and how one can never run from one’s own life experience in this murder mystery where Mac finds himself a suspect in the murders of his ex-wife and her former lover. Threads of identity...more

Mac is settling in to his new life as a multimillionaire after inheriting the estate of his biological mother, famous mystery writer Robin Spencer. It's quite a step up from being on the brink of bankruptcy following his divorce. He loves his new stone and cedar lakefront mansion and has grown quite fond of his mother's editor, Archie, who lives in the guest house. He's even tolerating the rambunctious German shepherd Gnarly reasonably well. Then his ex-wife shows up, drunk, on his doorstep, beg...more

The second novel in the Mac Faraday series, Old Loves Die Hard, is a wonderful mystery novel involving the murder of Mac Faraday’s ex-wife. Carr has again created an action packed suspense novel, bringing back the beloved characters of Mac Faraday, Archie, police Chief David O’Callaghan, and the ever-mischievous Gnarly. I absolutely loved the many twists and turns within the novel, keeping me on the edge of my seat as the story unfolded. Carr’s superb characterization causes the reader to feel l...more

'Old Loves Die Hard" by Lauren Carr started off as a page turner but I soon got bogged down. If the author had found a way to cut down on the suspects and the intricate of the crimes, I would be giving this book a much higher rating.

It hurts to do that because I really love the main characters, Mac Faraday who used to be a poor homicide detective and his girlfriend Archie Monday, a mystery writer. But most of all, Gnarly, a 100 pound German Shepherd who was incredibly smart and endearing is the...more

Lauren Carr has followed up on It's Murder, My Son with Old Loves Die Hard, placing Mac Faraday squarely in the middle of a murder investigation allegedly committed by his ex wife in the penthouse suite of Mac's resort hotel. The day Mac's divorce became final, after his wife had left him for her monied and ambitious lover, was the day that he learnt of his multi million dollar inheritance. Now that her relationship has collapsed it seems his ex-wife wants Mac back and turns up drunk and pleadin...more

Setting: Modern day, Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

Mac is starting to adjust to his new life when his ex-wife, Christine, shows up at his door drunk. I had wondered when the ex would come around now that he had a mansion and the money to keep it. Mac quickly takes her to the Spencer Inn so she is out of his hair. He barely walks in the lobb...more

After the last book, I mentioned that I didn't really connect with the main character at first, this book brings him the life in a personal way as he addresses a murder that touches his past. Once again complications and coincidences bring enough muddy the investigation but heighten the intrigue of the story. I do wish Mac would get a clue about Gnarly; by now the detective should understand that as frustrating as the dog is, it is because he is so smart. On to the next one.

This was the second one in the series. I like the main characters, but the plots are too convoluted and there's too much going on for one book. It muddies the water so much that I couldn't keep characters and their relationships straight.
Harry Lane
Carr must have a very devious mind to have thought up the twists and turns of this book's plot. The sheer amount of mayhem is a bit boggling, but Carr's characters are so well drawn you can almost see the movie in your mind.
Amy Sperry
Another great book in the series. Interesting characters from Mac's past converge into a twisting murder mystery.
