My mother thinks my job is crazy. I'm a paranormal investigator; she's Nancy Reagan crossed with Martha Stewart. She's always preferred my sister, Lily, who is following in her perfect footsteps.
But this time Mom needs my special skills. She believes my stepfather is possessed. I admit he's not his usual dapper, charming self, but sleepwalking doesn't sound that weird. Unt...more

This is the second installment of the Allegra Fairweather series. I haven't read the first book yet, and while there were some little things I didn't understand, South of Salem can just as easily work as a standalone.
Allegra is, for the most part, a likable character, easy enough to grow attached to. She could have used her brain a little more from time to time, but even when she failed to think things through, I didn't get as frustrated as I could have. She is a paranormal investigat...more

When I first picked up South of Salem by Janni Nell from NetGalley, I didn't realize it was book 2 in a series, so I had decided not to read it. I hate coming into the middle of a story arc and trying to catch up on the backstory by gleaning hints from the second. It's a lot of work when I could just read the first, right?
Then I read a review that mentioned South of Salem is a great stand-alone. So I bit the bullet and picked it back up.

After successfully concluding her case in Scotland Allegra returns to the US where she's drawn into assisting her mother with her stepfather, Steven. Steven is a politician and comes from an old wealthy family. Her mother believes he's been possessed, as hard as it is for her to say, and wants Allegra to fix things. Allegra definitely has her work cut out for as this case threatens the lives of her family.

Readers looking for a kick-ass heroine who is also sarcastic, smart, tough, brave and flawed, will love Allegra. She is a highly successful paranormal investigator and problem-solver, and has returned home at her mother's request to help her stepfather, a politician from a wealthy and prominent family with several

Aussie author alert! *grin* Being aussie myself, it’s always a joy to find an aussie author writing the types of books I love, and becoming a new favourite find for me. :D
South of Salem is Janni Nell‘s second book in her Allegra Fairweather mysteries. Having not read the first one, I was a bit concerned I was going to get lost, scratching my head over who everyone was, and trying to work out the cryptic mentions of previous happenings. Allegra Fairweather is a Paranormal Investigator with a personal life that is a lot more frightening than the supernatural stuff she deals with in her line of work. She handles it all with a sharp tongue and by keeping her thoughts to herself, especially when it comes to dealing with her crush- her guardian Angel, Casper- who will be punished by the beings on high if he ever touches her. Combine that with an uptight and judgmental family and it’s no wonder she uses humor to deal with it all. Thi...more
This was a great read! I was a little nervous about not reading the first in the series..would I understand what was going on? Definitely!!! You do not need to read the first book to get wrapped up in the story.
The whole storyline was great and I loved Allegra's attitude. She is sassy and smart. Her mother on the other hand, is totally annoying. One of those characters that is always worried about what everyone else will think. She is totally embarrassed by Allegra and although, their relationsh...more

Allegra is a paranormal investigator, and she’s returned to Salem to visit her mother and sister, only to discover her perfectly coiffed society mother desperate because Allegra’s stepfather is possessed. Since no one in Allegra’s family wants to admit that the paranormal exists, Allegra’s usually not the most popular member of the family, but when a cousin dies from sleepwalking and all signs point to possession, Allegra steps in to help.

In South of Salem paranormal investigator Allegra Fairweather is hard at work to solve another mystery, but It’s so much harder when the clients are your family.
South of Salem was a very fast paced read, and I enjoyed the story line. But I found myself having to go back and reread paragraphs due to the way one scene would (not flow) go into the next. The only other complaint I had was Allegra herself. Allegra’s jealousy over her sister was so childish. It was mentioned so many times that it made...more

A paranormal investigator, a good mystery, an sidekick angel called Casper who has gone MIA. Now, if that is not something you’re looking for in a fantasy fiction, I don’t know what else you’re looking for.

This is book 2 in the Allegra Fairweather Series. If you haven’t read book 1 do not let that stop you. There are a few references to book 1 but they are not essential to the enjoyment of the story. They do leave you intrigued about the first book though.

In South of Salem, Allegra is back stateside visiting her family. An adult returning home is never easy, especially for Allegra whose family wants nothing more than to ignore anything even remotely paranormal. Of course, when Allegra's stepfather is believed to be possessed, Allegra is the first person they call.
Allegra's family dynamics vie with the paranormal as the main focus of South of Salem, much to my delight. I love Allegra's investigating but as she faces the past and future of her fami...more

South of Salem is a paranormal mystery, the second in the Allegra Fairweather series. I did not read the first book, "Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator," but South of Salem reads just fine as a stand-alone book.
Allegra is called home by her mother, who says her stepfather is possessed; he is sleepwalking. Things must be pretty bad because Allegra's mother does not like that she is a paranormal investigator! Allegra begins to investigate, but things get even more complicated when other...more

Quirky, sarcastic heroine, Allegra's my kind of girl!
Coming back home after being away is never easy, in Allegra's case it's more of a pain in the ass. Her mother doesn't believe in her line of work, her sister is married to their brother (TOTALLY not what you think), oh and her step father is now possessed. If that doesn't spell out, WELCOME HOME, I don't know what does!?
Allegra's mother wants her to get to the bottom of what's possessed her step father & quickly, because possessions are so...more

Truth be told: I didn't read the first installment of the Allegra Fairweather series, yet and it took me a while to start (and finish) South of Salem. I'm certainly going to read the whole series someday, but it might take some time and until then, here is my review:
As I said, I didn't read the first book and there were a few things I did not get, but the novel isn't that deep or demanding. Instead you get your easy read and seriously, those little thing...more

South of Salem by Janni Nell is a paranormal mystery with strong aspects of family conflict and a dash of frustrated romance thrown in for good measure. This e-book is scheduled for release on May 30 2011. It is the second book in the Allegra Fairweather series, but stands up well on its own. I had not ready the previous book, and felt that I did not miss anything. However, I do plan on going back to read the first one, llegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator, simply because I enjoyed this b...more

Allegra is a paranormal investigator, a job her mother hates until she need Allegra to help her current husband who just happens to haunted by a ghost. Allegra is helped in her career by a guardian angel named Caspar that she has the serious hots for and he seems to reciprocate, or he would if it weren't against the guardian angel code. In the midst of all this drama, there is also some serious sister rivalry and mother jealousy and the main character's own angst that her family can't accept her...more
Paranormal Investigator Allegra Fairweather's latest case hits a little too close to home. Her stepfather may be possessed and it's up to Allegra to get to the bottom of things. But this case is more challenging than it seems. When her pregnant sister is kidnapped as well, Allegra pulls out all the stops: midnight grave digging, resurrecting ghosts and calling on the aid of her Wiccan best friend. And, if things weren't crazy enough, Casper, Allegra's sexy-but-off-limits guardian angel, is too d...more
A delightful story involving strange happenings that are disturbing to all involved. But Allegra Fairweather, paranormal investigator, seems to thrive on issues of oddity. Except when her family is involved. After Allegra’s real father went missing many years earlier and was considered dead, her mother remarried Steven Richard Hampton, XXXII. Her sister Lily married Steven Junior. The Hamptons seem to be targets of the supernatural and Allegra must figure who and why and then try and stop them b...more

The protagonist in this story is of course Allegra Fairweather, she is the black sheep of her “perfect” family. She got a perfect sister named Lily, and her mother is married to a successful politician. Given the frames of Allegra’s family I have a hard time to come to terms with that her mother called her daughter Allegra. I feel like it’s a very unusual name in the context of a couple of “perfect” people. Unless...more

I have to admit, I was not sure I would like this book after the first chapter. The story grows in intensity as it progresses and by the end you can not put it down. This book had alot of humor and sadness which kept you guessing what would happen next. It did seem to go off at times but recovered before loosing my interest. I would recommend this book for those who like suspense type books.

This was a nice story. It has the feel good factor to it. Even though it is a mystry story it has a boat load of humour in it. The story was thrilling and more then held my interest, I enjoyed the relationship between Allegra and Casper and Allegra and her family. Would I recommend this book....... Yes to anyone who likes some humour in their books especially unintentional humour.
Allegra is a paranormal investigator whose big toe itches when something paranormal is nearby. Other than that she has no special powers and she's a likeable, down-to-earth heroine. It's a fun paranormal mystery read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Allegra has a hunky guardian angel who she nicknamed Casper as a child. He pops in and out of the story as he's otherwise engaged in attending an angel awards ceremony. It's not, however, a romance.
