This is the second installment of the Allegra Fairweather series. I haven't read the first book yet, and while there were some little things I didn't understand, South of Salem can just as easily work as a standalone.

Allegra is, for the most part, a likable character, easy enough to grow attached to. She could have used her brain a little more from time to time, but even when she failed to think things through, I didn't get as frustrated as I could have. She is a paranormal investigat...more 2.5 stars.

This is the second installment of the Allegra Fairweather series. I haven't read the first book yet, and while there were some little things I didn't understand, South of Salem can just as easily work as a standalone.

Allegra is, for the most part, a likable character, easy enough to grow attached to. She could have used her brain a little more from time to time, but even when she failed to think things through, I didn't get as frustrated as I could have. She is a paranormal investigator, but she doesn't have any supernatural abilities, except for a toe that itches every time she's close to something paranormal. (I think that little detail was supposed to be cute, or even funny, but to me it was neither.)

There's really nothing in this book that hasn't been written before: a sarcastic, not-too-bright heroine, a perfect mother and perfect sister who don't approve of her lifestyle, a super sexy guardian angel who is forbidden from ever having sex (he would if he could, of course!), and a witch best friend with information that can save the day.

The author tried a bit too hard to be funny most of the time. However, there were some moments that had me laughing out loud:
At death’s door, there’s really only one thing to do: sing Barry Manilow. I launched into “Somewhere in the Night.” The acoustics were brilliant. I sounded so good even Barry would’ve been impressed. For a moment I was almost happy, floating and singing in my new improved voice. Then the water began to suck me down. I guess it wasn’t a Manilow fan.

My biggest problem with this book was Allegra’s relationship with her pregnant sister Lilly. I understand sibling rivalry, but I just couldn’t stand the way Allegra treated Lily. Here’s an example:
All I could think of was Lily. And not in a bad way. Not, ‘She deserved this for being a bitch’. I was genuinely worried about her. And not because Mom would be pissed off if I let anything happen to her favorite daughter. I actually wanted Lily to survive. Go figure.
Yeah. She’s your only sister. She had to be kidnapped by an evil witch for you to figure that out!

That being said, South of Salem is a super light, non demanding read. It’s a perfect book to take to the beach. I don’t know about you, guys, but that’s where I’ll be spending the next three months!!

When I first picked up South of Salem by Janni Nell from NetGalley, I didn't realize it was book 2 in a series, so I had decided not to read it. I hate coming into the middle of a story arc and trying to catch up on the backstory by gleaning hints from the second. It's a lot of work when I could just read the first, right?
Then I read a review that mentioned South of Salem is a great stand-alone. So I bit the bullet and picked it back up.

She has always felt like the black sheep of the family, and in spite of their snide remarks and lack of respect for her profession, her love and loyalty to her mother and big sister Lily keeps her ghost-hunting.
Soon after her arrival home, her step-father's blood relatives start mysteriously dropping like flies. Allegra herself is nearly killed by a bitchy ghost and a scary old crone. Who may or may not be related somehow. And soon Lily's unborn child is targeted, kicking Allegra's investigation into high gear. Unable to solve the mystery on her own, Allegra soon calls in her best friend and roommate Wanda, an optimistic, wannabe witch of questionable competence but excellent research skills. Allegra's guardian angel, Casper, a hunky 2,000 year old Germanic warrior, is not technically supposed to help her (just protect her), but he drops clues quite a bit. And hardheaded Allegra frequently doesn't pick up on these clues, which makes her all the more likable and realistic.
Told in a chatty, first-person narrative, this is a quick read that makes the reader feel like she's hanging out with a girlfriend. Who doesn't like a girl who has to swear a blue streak in order to clear her mind? No meditation/kumbaya crap for our heroine! Allegra is tough on the outside, but the woman inside is still a little girl who feels hurt, unloved and unappreciated by her mother and sister. She and Lily fall into their childhood roles of prissy big sister and rebellious younger sister, in spite of everything going on around them. Which is one of the reasons the characters felt so real - these are complicated relationships between Allegra, Lily and their mother. They may love each other deep down, but they seemingly have nothing in common - just like a real family.
Allegra's relationship with Casper is also very interesting. They are very attracted to each other, but Casper is constrained by strict guardian angel rules. Rules that he and Allegra frequently stretch as far as they can, creating a nice sexual and romantic tension for the background.
South of Salem is the second book in the Allegra Fairweather series. I have not read the first, but never felt lost. This is a great stand-alone story as well.(less)

Joyfully, that wasn’t the case. It was quite easy to pick up what was happening, and that’s always a good thing.

Allegra Fairweather is a paranormal investigator (don’t call her a ghostbuster!) who is called upon by her mother to find out what’s going on with Allegra’s stepfather. Allegra’s mother believes him to be possessed, and it isn’t long before Allegra is agreeing with her. Something is happening to his family, something terrible.

South of Salem is a fun read – like all good kick-ass heroines, Allegra is witty, sarcastic and strong. Janni Nell has thrown in something a bit different tho – Allegra has a Guardian Angel who she calls Casper. :D Casper’s job is to save Allegra, but while he can’t outright tell her what’s happening with any of her cases, he does tend to break the rules a tiny bit and gives her a hand now and then. But during South of Salem, he has other things on his mind – The Angel Awards, which takes him from Allegra’s side, and could quite possibly be the thing that takes him from her forever.

There were a few things in the book that had me curious and wanting to know more – Allegra’s father left the family when she was only young, and I kept wondering if he was going to pop up in a later book. I kept getting the feeling that his disappearance and not being seen again, has something to do with Allegra’s chosen field of work. Allegra’s relationship with her sister Lily is something I’d like to explore more too – they do not get on at all. Lily seems to be their mother’s favourite – the daughter who did everything right. At times, the relationship between them seemed to thaw a little, so I’d be interested to see what the author does with that. More of Casper too please! :D

If you’re a fan of urban fantasy, witty heroines and hunky angels, you’re going to enjoy this one!

South of Salem is the second title in the Allegra Fairweather Mysteries series. I did not have a chance to read the first book in the series, Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator, but South of Salem worked well enough as a standalone story (there are several references to previous cases, however).

In this story, Allegra has been called upon to investigate the strange behavior of her step-father. Her mother, who does not appreciate Allegra's chosen profession, is at wit's end explaining her husband's "possessed" behavior. Once Allegra reluctantly begins her investigation, she discovers that other members of her step-father's family have been afflicted by something paranormal that has targeted the family.

Allegra, quite the "smarty-pants," uses her wit (and an "itchy toe") to deal with disagreeable members of her family, in order to get the bottom of the family malaise. In the process, her familial relationships improve, and she gains greater acceptance from her family for her paranormal investigation skills.

As South of Salem is a mystery, and not a romance, this book doesn't quite fit the paranormal romance genre. Allegra does have a major crush on her guardian angel, Casper, but Casper is prohibited from entering into a relationship with his charges. The relationship between the two (or lack, thereof) was a small disappointment for me, because I think there's enough of a spark between Casper and Allegra, but all we get is smokescreen in this tale. To be honest, Casper seemed a much more compelling character than Allegra (she's seems rather irritating and childish, after awhile), and I wanted more, more, more of Casper-- but he only appears on the sidelines on the few occasions when Allegra is in over her head, or needs a nudge in the right direction for solving the mystery.

Overall, I liked this book, and I think the series shows promise. It will be interesting to see if anything more romantic develops between Allegra and Casper in future books-- hopefully Janni Nell puts us romantic-types (and Allegra) out of our misery soon!

Allegra Fairweather is a Paranormal Investigator with a personal life that is a lot more frightening than the supernatural stuff she deals with in her line of work. This was a great read! I was a little nervous about not reading the first in the series..would I understand what was going on? Definitely!!! You do not need to read the first book to get wrapped up in the story.

I love gritty, dark PNR. This is not gritty. In fact, So...more Allegra is a paranormal investigator, and she’s returned to Salem to visit her mother and sister, only to discover her perfectly coiffed society mother desperate because Allegra’s stepfather is possessed. Since no one in Allegra’s family wants to admit that the paranormal exists, Allegra’s usually not the most popular member of the family, but when a cousin dies from sleepwalking and all signs point to possession, Allegra steps in to help.

I love gritty, dark PNR. This is not gritty. In fact, South of Salem is distinctly lighthearted (at one point Allegra sings Barry Manilow), but that was a nice change of pace for this reader. Allegra’s sister Lily and her mother are described as perfect society wives who find themselves frantically trying to save their husbands, Steven Richard Hampton the 32nd and Steven Richard Hampton the 33rd. Fortunately, Allegra has the help of Casper, her guardian angel, and her best friend Wanda, a witch, to help her find whoever is targeting the males of the Hampton family. Allegra isn’t like a lot of PNR heroines in appearance or disposition, but she does care about her family, and her sense of humor helps her deal with them.

I enjoyed the book, mostly because it was so humorous. The Hampton family was delightfully snooty, and their behavior once possessed was the complete opposite of how they would normally behave. The only criticism I have of the book is that Allegra’s rivalry with her sister seemed overdone. Both are adults, yet sometimes when Allegra would think about her sister, she went past snarky and into indifferent and cruel. At one point Allegra’s actually surprised that she’s worried about her pregnant sister’s safety when Lily’s kidnapped by the villain, which seems a bit extreme to me. The book is somewhat light on the romance, since Allegra has a thing for her guardian angel, Casper, and acting on that attraction would mean that he couldn’t be her guardian angel anymore. However, I look forward to seeing how Ms. Nell resolves this issue in future additions to the series, because the light flirting between the two was fun to read. Allegra wasn’t the take-charge, kick butt type of heroine you often see in PNR, and that made her all the more appealing to me. If you’re looking for a fun, short PNR that’s on the lighter side, this would be a great choice.

Allegra is a paranormal investigator with a guardian angel – a hot, sexy but totally off limits angel. She has a perfect mother and sister, neither of whom acknowledges the paranormal. That is until Allegra’s mother believes that her husband, a politician, has become possessed. Then it turns out there is a family curse on him and her sister Lily’s husband. The witch who cursed the family is also after Lily’s unborn child. This would seem to be a dark read except for the snarky wit that is sprinkled throughout the book. There is some sibling rivalry but I found it to be believable as Allegra and her sister don’t get along and yet can and do count on each other. There is also reference to Allegra’s father who disappeared years before. Although her mother believes him dead Allegra knows this is not the case. It is something I think will come up again in future books in the series. The characters are well defined. I especially appreciated the background on the witches who were involved with the curse and how they related to the family. Allegra has a best friend who is a witch and helps her on this case. I think we will be seeing more of her either in this series or perhaps a spin off series.
I found this to be a fast but entertaining read. I enjoyed it enough to pick up the first book and be interested in the next book in the series. I particularly want to see where the relationship with Allegra and Casper, her guardian angel, goes. If you have been reading heavy books and are looking for a break with some light, pleasant reading I would recommend South of Salem. It has action, snark, good character and plot development, realistic family dynamics and some sexual tension. There are no heavy sexual scenes so it is fine for those who prefer cleaner reads. It is an enjoyable paranormal book.

An adult returning home is never easy, especially for Allegra whose family wants nothing more than to ignore anything even remotely paranormal. I didn’t read the first book in the series; I didn’t realize there was a first book called Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator. Despite skipping the book which probably would have set this one up nicely, I kinda liked the story. It’s not a romance. It’s not an urban fantasy. But it is an interesting mystery involving witches and angels.

Once I got over being confused by the references to Allegra’s past investigations and her dislike for her family, I had to deal with the squickiness of Allegra’s biological sister being married her stepbrother. Okay, it’s all baggage under the bus that made me pick up on the paranormal problems which could arise. I didn’t know why Allegra’s stepfamily was being targeted for extermination, but it was entertaining to read about.

I got to admit that I really didn’t like Allegra. She was very immature. Maybe that’s what makes her charming, but for me it got old. It was funny when she spied on her guardian angel Casper. However as the end of the story approached and Allegra was still creating situations which would allow her to touch Casper, I became exasperated. Her voice (in my mind as I read the story) sounded manipulative and sly. And not in a good way. Another thing, for an investigator she sure can be dumb. I wanted to punch her when she became jealous of the obvious hints which came time and time again. Doing so allowed the story to continue longer, but it showcased exactly how immature Allegra really is.

South of Salem is nicely written, but when I’m not sure I ever liked the main character my overall enjoyment of the book is diminished. Allegra acts and speaks childishly. Her crush on Casper is cute, but other than the sexual draw, it felt like a 13-year-old’s attraction toward the new boy in school. The mystery was well developed, but I don’t like Allegra enough to continue this miniseries.

With the case taking off, Allegra has to now keep a watchful eye on her pregnant sister, for more then one reason. It seems ghosts of the past would do almost anything to get their hands on her unborn child.

Coming into South of Salem I hadn't read the first book in the series, but I found it very easy to catch up on the back history of the characters without being bored or over done.
Allegra is a paranormal investigator with a hunky guardian angel who always happens to show up right in the nick of time. Though she totally has the hots for Casper (that's what Allegra named him), the Powers Above will revoke his guardian-ness if anything ever happens. It always seems like someone just has to step in & put a kink in a potentially awesome hook-up!
I immediately fell in love with Allegra. She's got the quick responses and witty comebacks that will put any character in their place, but by the end of the book she shows a softer side that is always good to see. She takes pride in her work and doesn't care what anyone, including her family, has to say.
There was only 1 downfall that I found in this book, and it was that the ending was slightly rushed. There was SO much going on. Fights, witches, labor, angels, more witches, it just seemed like it was crammed in there. But I will continue to read about Allegra's journey, where ever it might lead her.

Truth be told: I didn't read the first installment of the Allegra Fairweather series, yet and it took me a while to start (and finish) South of Salem. I'm certainly going to read the whole series someday, but it might take some time and until then, here is my review:

Truth be told: I didn't read the first installment of the Allegra Fairweather series, yet and it took me a while to start (and finish) South of Salem. I'm certainly going to read the whole series someday, but it might take some time and until then, here is my review:

As I said, I didn't read the first book and there were a few things I did not get, but the novel isn't that deep or demanding. Instead you get your easy read and seriously, those little things were so minor that I did not feel completely lost.

Since the series is called Allegra Fearweather, let's start with the main character: Allegra. She's an okay-character. She's a nice girl and I liked that she's no real paranormal being herself and still investigating paranormal cases. Although that could be called dumb. And sometimes I have to admit.. Allegra, what the fuck. You do have a brain, why didn't you use it?

The novel's been a bit of a.. Well, look: It was like the author took things that had been written before (as everyone, even Goethe did, I know) and put them together in a way that she thought was going to be funny, sarcastic et cetera. You got your Sookie Stackhouse-heroine, your Gilmore Girls mother (no, not talkin' about Lorelai here), your Buffy-ish best friend, your guardian angel aka guy who wants to but can't sleep with you, Bella.. um, Allegra.. Did I forget something? Right, the weird sister (Um, where did we have a weird sister? In Boys that Bite, but that book's been a waste of tree.) the strange case.. well. ;) And I have to admit: It worked most of the times.

The plot's been.. Hm. So, Allegra is the black sheep. Her family is oh-so-perfect and she is.. well, she's a paranormal investigator. But when her mom's asking for help, she's coming to see if her stepfather really is being possessed. He's some weird politician and his relatives all die and then there's a freak ghost and did I mention that Allegras bitch-sis is pregnant? And, and, and.. ;)

I'm going to read the first book next week and reread the second afterwards. Then there'll hopefully be a better review than this one. :)

But for now: It's a good read. Easy-peasy and nothing mind-blowing but if you liked the excerpt, the blurb or if you just want to see how an angel and his to-be-guarded try to make out without breaking any rules: Read it.

Allegra Fairweather is a paranormal investigator whose last case took her to Scotland where she solved a case involving banshees, a homicidal ghost and a trio of drunkards. She has a success rate for solving paranormal cases of 99.5 percent; that also has alot to do with her guardian angels assistance.

This time around she is asked to travel to Boston where her Mother and older sister Lily lives. Sandra believes that her husband, Steven Hampton, is possessed because he has started to sleepwalk. Sandra doesn’t actually like what Allegra does for a living, so for her to reach out and ask assistance is a major turnaround in Allegra’s life.

Allegra has a guardian angel who she calls Casper. Casper has been a guardina for a millenia, and is hoping that his time will finally come when he can go home. He has been with her since she was five years old. He has saved her life countless number of times, and in this story, that doesn’t change. Casper is also up for the Sir Galahad Award for Honorable Treatment of Women along with Henry the Eight, Caligula and Jack the Ripper. Allegra has a major crush on her guardian angel but nothing comes of it because it is forbidden by the Angel Code of Conduct. One false move and Casper goes away permanently.

This is a story of mystery and the paranormal. No, there are no vampires, werewolves, or fae. The angry ghost, who was once the most powerful witch to ever live, and is trying to kill each and every member of the Hampton family because she was not chosen to marry Steven Hampton the twentieth. It is up to Allegra to find a way to stop her before she ends up hurting her very pregnant sister in the process.

The story takes place in Boston, which is not very far from Salem where the witch trials and executions were held. We learn from Allegra that there are two types of ghosts: misty and solid. Solid ones are the most dangerous since they can use weapons and harm humans. Misty ghosts can’t do anything but appear and scare people, essentially harmless.

Allegra is an interesting, as well as spunky character. She has a best friend named Wanda who is a witch, and lives in San Diego. I haven't read the first book, Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator, but I think South of Salem is perfectly readable as a standalone novel for those who may be interested in reading it.

The protagonist in this story is of course Allegra Fairweather, she is the black sheep of her “perfect” family. She got a perfect sister named Lily, and her mother is married to a successful politician. Given the frames of Allegra’s family I have a hard time to come to terms with that her mother called her daughter Allegra. I have to admit, I was not sure I would like this book after the first chapter. The story grows in intensity as it progresses and by the end you can not put it down. This book had alot of humor and sadness which kept you guessing what would happen next. It did seem to go off at times but recovered before loosing my interest. I would recommend this book for those who like suspense type books.

This was a nice story. It has the feel good factor to it. Even though it is a mystry story it has a boat load of humour in it. The story was thrilling and more then held my interest, I enjoyed the relationship between Allegra and Casper and Allegra and her family. Would I recommend this book....... Yes to anyone who likes some humour in their books especially unintentional humour.

Allegra is a paranormal investigator whose big toe itches when something paranormal is nearby. Other than that she has no special powers and she's a likeable, down-to-earth heroine. It's a fun paranormal mystery read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Allegra has a hunky guardian angel who she nicknamed Casper as a child. He pops in and out of the story as he's otherwise engaged in attending an angel awards ceremony. It's not, however, a romance.
