After accidentally leaving a book I was reading at work I was restlessly prowling my shelves when I came upon this. I'd heard some pretty good things about the book and I enjoyed some of this author's other books, so I figured I'd finally give it a go. I enjoyed it for the most part, but it unfortunately didn't thrill me as much as it did some of my friends.

I'd heard some pretty good things about the book and I enjoyed some of this author's other books, so I figured I'd finally give it a go. I enjoyed it for the most part, but it unfortunately didn't thrill me as much as it did some of my friends.

The premise of the book was one of the most interesting parts for me. I really liked the society the author described and how she didn't skim over the unattractive prejudicial parts of it. It was nice to read a book where that issue isn't neatly brushed aside in order for the hero and heroine to have a happily ever after. Sacrifices had to be made on Kim's part if she really wanted to be together. Liam also had to sacrifice, but that seemed pretty small when compared to Kim's potentially life altering choice.

I really liked the glimpse of the shifter politics we saw--although they were also pretty frustrating at times. It really made the shifter hierarchy seem constrictive and prone to misuse. The reasons that were eventually given for Brian's defense (or lack thereof) were quite interesting. I didn't really see that coming, but I liked it!

I liked getting to know the secondary characters. Sean's real struggle to reconcile his role in the pack with the impact it has on his family tugged at my heartstrings. I also really loved Connor--he was adorable. I think my favorite secondary characters have to be Liam's dad, Dylan, and their neighbor, Glory. I feel sort of bad for Glory as things currently stand and hope that their storyline continues to develop in the next book.

Liam was a fun character for the most part. I liked the way he would lay his Irish on thick occasionally. It amused me that it irked Kim so much. I liked how laid back and matter of fact about his circumstances he was. Especially when I learned how his family ended up being collared. It would have made no sense to portray him any other way. Having said that, I still liked the hidden anguish over it that he showed at the end. His decision there made him seem extremely strong, although I fear for the future of the shifters.

Kim was a little more irritating than Liam, although I still ended up mostly liking her. She started out feeling real with her fear and determination but quickly fit herself to the standard PNR heroine mold. It's not necessarily a bad mold, but it makes them pretty interchangeable. I thought I'd see more of Kim's drive and passion for her work, but it really just felt like a plot device to me.

That leads into some of my issues with the book. For one thing, when exactly was Kim going to actually be a lawyer? It seemed awfully easy for her to live in a vacuum other than a token visit or two to her office. That's another thing--what company allows their employees to have random companions while they work? I'm not talking about just shifters, I'm talking about anyone hanging out in your workplace all day long for no reason and with no prior approval. That seemed pretty fantastical to me.

I really wish that the author would have set the relationship over a longer timeline. It didn't really make me think much of Kim when she compromised her case by screwing with a lead. Maybe that could have happened a bit further down the road than a day or two after their first meeting? Another turn off was Kim's incessant comparison of Liam to Abel--it jarred me out of the narrative each time I read about it.

The end was an incredible disappointment for me. That's the reason everything magically fixed itself in their relationship??? I don't know whether to be repelled by Kim who thought that that would fix everything or to be appalled by Liam who proved her right.

"No Shifters Allowed!" -That's exactly what fascinated me in this book, this racist mentality both in law and society in general. Legally shifters aren't able to get high paid jobs or buy luxury items. Proprietors are allowed to ban shifters from their premises and racism against them is tolerated because they're "animals".

OMG OMG OMG!!! I have been looking for a paranormal series to get into and I finally found it! I have had this book forever and have been ignoring it, what an idiot i was! I thought this book was absolutely wonderful!! I am a huge Shifter fan, but this book was more than just Shifters. It was a wonderful story about love and family! I loved the characters, their strength and their vulnerability. This book made me cry and laugh right out loud, I can officially say I am in love with a big Fae-Cat named Liam!! LOL :) But I truly can't believe I have to wait over 7 months for Sean's story (which sounds phenomenal btw!)

I loved this book! Kim is a defense attorney who drew the short straw and is defending a Shifter named Brian. I had a $10.00 credit at Audible and Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley fell within that price range. Knowing this was the same author who brought me my beloved The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, how could I resist?

To say this audio started out rough is an understatement. The production was filled with a snap-crackle-pop of noise and narrator Tracy Odom sounded like she had been released from a starting gate as she charged into the narration. But, by the time it took me to experiment with the settings to slow things down on my MP3 player, I had settled into the rapid-fire narration and was caught up in the beginning of the story.

Kim Fraser is an open-minded attorney trying to gather information to exonerate her client, a Shifter male accused of murdering his girlfriend. Kim believes in his innocence as she knows Shifters must wear collars that cause intense pain if their adrenalin spikes thus restraining them from acting out violently. She also believes in the reliability of the collars and risks entering Shiftertown to meet with Liam Morissey, the man who can help make her case – if he is so inclined.

To be honest, if I had read Pride Mates before listening to the audio version, I would have been seriously disappointed at the tone given to Liam’s voice when he first spoke. However, it took very little time for me to fall for the distinctive light Irish lilt Ms. Odom lent him which only grew better as the story progressed and other family members were introduced with their version of the lilt. Liam’s voice isn’t pitched lower but it is immediately recognizable as were the other males in his family. Actually I ended up being impressed with all the voices and personalities given to this large cast of main characters. I wish I could say the bursts of static smoothed out as well but at least they were short in duration when they did occur.

The standard paranormal romance mating bond is present in Pride Mates but there is so much more to the story that the bonding aspect pales as the plot unfolds. I had expectations from the author who gave me Ian Mackenzie and I felt those expectations were met by the time I finished listening.

Pride Mates is the first book in the Shifters Unbound series and I’m hoping they produce the rest of the series in audio as well. I’d be happy to listen to Tracy Odom again, especially with this cast of characters.(less)

I think this is the first shifter book I've read where the world has them as the underdogs, not superhumans with special powers; they are segregated and discriminated against by the human world, in a way that to me seems reminiscent of the African-American communities of the 1950's and 60's. Review:
An interesting take on the Shapeshifter premise. This is the first book I’ve read in which the shifters’ animal traits overshadow their human ones and it is an intriguing perspective.

The conflicts and prejudices that characterize humans/shifter interaction and the social rules, hierarchies and norms of the shifter community are exceedingly detailed and add credence to the world established in the book. The manner in which Ashley presents the discrimination against the shifters and the problematic ethics of the collar is particularly thought provoking.

The characters are wonderful and the romance sizzles. Kim's honesty, courage and stubbornness make her particularly engaging and Liam can charm the pants off anyone. However, there are a few things that bothered me. First, Liam and Kim have an immediate attraction and there is very little development of their relationship before they are mated. Second, Kim does not seem to fully grasp the significance of events going on around her, and lastly, the constant physical contact between all of the characters, not only the primary couple, takes some getting used to.

The supporting characters are also appealing, especially Liam’s tortured brother, his emotionally distant father, and my personal favorite, his boisterous nephew, Connor. One character who did not live up to his initial characterization is the villain. While he is a nasty piece of work, he does not evoke anything more than mild distaste and never becomes the uber-villain that would contribute to the tension and suspense of the final confrontation.

The story is the weak point in the book. It would have been better if more effort has been put into the murder mystery and Kim’s investigation, especially since it turns out to be a pivotal aspect of the plot – I won’t say anymore so as not to ruin it.

Overall, this is an entertaining book and I look forward to reading the next installment. (less)

Liam Morrissey was the man that Kim was told to go see if she had any way of proving her client's innocence. He was the "go-to" guy according to her client. Liam was an Irish Feline-Shifter and managed a Shifter bar on the edge of Shiftertown. Shiftertown were where the Shifters lived.

When both Liam and Kim started being stalked by a feral Shifter, Liam trusted only himself to provide her protection. The only problem was whether or not she would allow him to.

The main reason that I liked this book so much might sound weird to some. I liked it because as Kim and Liam's relationship blossoms, racism was addressed. Now you may say that that's an odd take on a PNR but you have to see it my way. As a bi-racial woman I am not unfamiliar with discrimination and it's a hot topic with me. The way that the Shifters were treated by the government is not unlike our own governmental history. Today, even in our supposed "enlightened age" prejudice and discrimination against people who are different still happens. Case in point? The treatment of Japanese-American citizens in WWII, the encampment of Native Americans in reservations, the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the treatment of homosexuals are all prime examples.

Another reason That I liked this book is very simple. This book is yet another example of Ashley's excellent and spectacular writing.

I accidentally stumbled over that series and after reading the plot I was like:"Shifters. Sounds like my kind of thing.". I wasn't wrong at all.

I like the world that was created, gave me a bit of a X-Men vibe. With the shifters to fit in the world, but denied the same rights as humans, because they think they're dangerous and as we've learned through the course of the book they can be very dangerous.

This book is fucking garbage. The male characters read like they're written by a dumb woman, and the female characters feel like they're written by a stupid, misogynistic man. The romantic leads fall in love IMMEDIATELY, and...you know what, I don't feel like saying anything else. It's not good.

The crazy thing is that this author also wrote the WONDERFUL Stormwalker series under another pen name, Allyson James.

Having just finished The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie I moved on to a totally different sort of Jennifer Ashley book. It was very hard, and I feel I felt less moved about this book because the previous hero was just amazing (oh Ian I wish you every happiness with Beth)

I love everything paranormal; always considered myself a vampire girl until I started reading the Anita Blake books and totally fell for her gorgeous kitties. That being said, I was really excited when I found this book. This is the first book I've read by Jennifer Ashley and I liked it so much that I plan to pick up her other books.

Pride Mates was a great beginning in a series I'm really looking forward to diving into. 20 years ago, a Shifter made their existence known to the world without thinking of the consequences to his people. The Shifters were forced to wear collars to keep their nature in check and to restrict violent behavior. Jennifer Ashley has created a very interesting world and it makes you wonder. Would this happen if people were to find out that there are Shifters living among us?

Kim is a smart, sassy, tiny (which I LOVED since I'm a whopping 5" nothing)DA who takes on a murder case and ends up getting sucked into the Shifter world. The world wants to make an example of her client. Kim feels that he is innocent and will do anything to prove that. The government has painted a picture of these creatures showing that they are deadly and not to be trusted. The Shifters are contained in certain areas and aren't allowed high paying jobs or access to things like digital cable, high speed internet, newer vehicles; things we take for granted. Kim had never met a Shifter even though the human race had known about them for 20 years.

That is until she walked into Liam's bar. Ah, Liam. Boy is he gorgeous, charming and smart. Due to segregation, she is as foreign to him as he is to her. He knows very little about human nature but finds himself drawn to a human for the first time in his 100 years of life. He finds that not only does he find her incredibly sexually attractive, he is also fascinated with her spirit and determination. Immediately there was chemistry between the two of them.

I loved, loved, loved this book and read it in one sitting. I'm paying the price for it today since I has up til after 1:00 AM last night but it was worth it. It ranks right up there with Rachel Vincent's Shifters series and that's saying something cause it's one of my favorites. I highly recommend this book to anyone into paranormal romance, Shifters, and/or urban fantasy. You won't be disappointed.

I just have one question, where can I get one of those collars? It's bad ass and I want one!(less)

It’s her job to defend those in need. But there’s absolutely nothing defenseless about Liam Morrissey. His soft Irish lilt and feline grace can’t disguise his sheer strength. Nor can the silver chain at his throat, designed to control the aggression of his kind, completely reassure her that this man has been tamed.
Yet when a feral shifter begins to stalk them both, Liam is the only one she trusts with her life. She’ll let him claim her—for her protection, for her pride, and for a passion that knows no bounds.
Kim Fraser is an attorney who has been handed a murder case for Brian, the first shifter to even be charged with a crime since taking the fae-made collars. Kim is nervous and apprehensive about shifters. She believes she has done all the researched shifters and their ways, but upon arriving in Shiftertown she is somewhat frightened, but tries not to let her nerves get the best of her. Kim reminds herself throughout the book that Shifters are no longer the wild and reckless creatures that so many believed they once were. They still have limited rights and are discriminated against, but Kim is hoping that once she finds Brain not guilty that things will change. She sees this case as the case of a lifetime, and a career maker.

Kim arrives in Shiftertown to speak Liam is second in command of the alpha pack who she is sure can help her prove Brian's innocents. Liam and Kim have an instant attraction, which puts Liam in a difficult position. Liam must choice between doing what Fergus the leader of the area's shifters, or to do what he feels is right. Fergus wants Liam to be of no help to Kim and send her away. You can empathize with Liam, because everyone has been in that position. Liam starts sharing secrets about the shifters that he trusts Kim will never release to other humans. When Fergus gets wind of a human nosing around the shifters, he gets involved and things start to get messy. Liam will do anything to protect Kim, even if that means going up against his father and shifter law. Liam is a kind hearted man and does what he feels is best, even when he has to go up against those who are more powerful then him.

Dylan, Liam's father and the alpha of Shiftertown lost his mate years ago and is now struggling with accepting a new love. Though he is only a supporting character through most of the book his character is believable and one you will come to like and want him to be happy. He is getting older and losing the edge he needs to stay dominant in the pack which Liam not meaning to takes advantage of.

Conner is another supporting character that I enjoyed. I think I related to because is the son of Liam's brother who was killed by a rouge shifter. I understand what it is like to be raised by extended family. Conner never let it get to him that his uncles Liam and Sean, and his Grandfather Dylan were protective of him. Conner is very young, and eager to show off his skills, although he is strong and with time will hone his muscles, he is quick to temper and quick to show immature emotion. Conner was the opposite of Liam, which really played off well against the more mature, dominant males. Conner reminded me of myself, because he can be outspoken and not really worry about the consequences. I felt the Conner really represented a lot of young adults and their ways. He was very true to his age and maturity.

Thanks to Kim being handed Brain's case she was able to see the truth about shifters. It made her become a more rounded person and realize what she wanted to do with her life. Before the case she never cared about having a serious relationship or starting a family, but that soon changes. Before you know it she ready for that relationship with Liam and leaves her law firm to open up her own law office to help shifters. I loved how Kim's character developed throughout the novel, and you were able to see how much growth happened.(less)

District Attorney Kim Fraser has a Shifter murder case dumped in her lap. The Shifter had a human girlfriend who got killed and he's blamed for it even though the evidence against him is lacking. Kim thinks he's innocent so she tries everything she can to try to insert herself into the Shifter community to learn its secrets. She meets up with tall, dark, sexy AND Irish, Liam Morrissey to get information that will help Brian go free. Needless to say, Kim and Liam get along quickly and become entangled in each other's lives.

Liam is a Fae cat, an amalgamation of all the best traits of all the big cats. Having met Curran in Magic Bites I have to say that Liam just isn't as menacing as he could have been. These shifters just don't come to life as they could, especially if you've read Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series; she has the best werewolves out there that I've ever read about. It might be unfair to compare this light and fluffy paranormal romance with the grittier story-driven urban fantasies I mentioned above, but it's hard not to wish for something more engaging and real.

One thing I did like was the way the author approached the idea of shifters in this world. The shifters are controlled with collars, thin necklaces fused into their skin that were forged by the Fae to keep the shifters from harming anyone. If they show any aggression their body is wracked with pain and they become basically immobile. So really, it's a fancy shock collar. The shifters are discriminated against and segregated from the general population, and they're not allowed to have new technology or attend universities. I appreciate that she's trying something different and not just writing another cookie cutter shifter romance.

There was also touches of humor here and there that I wish she would have inserted more often. I especially liked how Liam was going around Kim's office saying "Top 'o the mornin' to you," because he says that's what Americans expect him to sound like. It was funny but I just wish she had inserted similar moments like this, it really could have made the book better and less cliched.

Here's some other problems I had with this book. First, there's little to no sexual tension. The characters hook up within the first 24 hours that they know each other. Ok, so he has his whole animal instinct going for him and he is gorgeous so they can sort of be forgiven. One night stands do happen after all. But then, within the next 72 hours they're bound together as mates (this is on the back of the book and also part of the title, so don't worry, no spoiler here.) Liam falls head over heals for Kim in less than half a week and wants to have babies and grow old together. Strange for real life but unfortunately common in paranormal romances.

Another problem I had was all the emotions running rampant with, surprisingly, the men. I understand that shifters crave the touch of others* and are normally considered more affectionate, than say, vampires or zombies. But come on, do we have to hug it out every time someone argues, or after any sort of mis-communication, or before, during, and after any kind of celebration? And then cry as well? Honestly with all the mood swings and misty eyes you'd think it was the men's time of the month - and not even in a moon-called sort of way.

So I think if you can't stomach the caveman mentality of "mate, protect, procreate" then you should probably pick up a different book. Every now and then I don't mind reading something like this because it's normally got a hot man and even hotter sex and it's mindless fun. With a few changes this book could have easily been better, but it unfortunately fell short. I will read the next book though to see where she takes things. The first book I read by her, Mortal Temptations, was ok but not the greatest. She had some good ideas though so I picked up the sequel, Mortal Seductions, and I'm glad I did because I liked it a lot more. I'm hoping the same thing will happen with the sequel to Pride Mates and I do look forward to checking it out.

Irish born Liam Morrissey is a feline shifter (some kind of Fae cat cross-breed) and the go-to guy for the clan. I liked Liam from the first sentence he uttered. OMG, I love this book. I remember the last time I read a book so fast and it was just as good. Pride Mates was freaking AMAZING.

ในอีกด้านนึงเรื่องราวของการเหยียดหยามที่มนุษย์มีให้กับชิฟเตอร์ คนแต่งสามารถเล่นประเด็นนี้แล้วทำให้เรื่องเครียดไปเลยก็ได้ เพราะมันเป็นความอยุติธรรมอย่างที่สุด ชิฟเตอร์เปรียบเสมือนพลเมืองชั้นสองที่โดนดูถูก เหยียดหยาม และไม่เป็นที่ต้อนรับในสังคมมนุษย์ แต่การเล่าเรื่องประเด็นผ่านมุมมองของเลียม กลับทำให้เรารู้สึกว่า มนุษย์ (ในเรื่อง) ช่างไม่รู้อะไรเลย เพราะสิ่งที่เขาทำกับชิฟเตอร์ไม่ใช่สิ่งที่ชิฟเตอร์มองว่ามันสำคัญ ดังนั้นสำหรับเลียมแล้ว มันไม่ได้ทำให้เขารู้สึกอะไรเลย ทำให้เวลาอ่านไม่ได้รู้สึกว่ากดดันอะไรมากมาย แต่เราก็เข้าใจนะคะว่า มันน่าจะเป็นประเด็นที่เล่นกันต่อในเล่มถัดไปในชุดได้

its not BDSM or anything, and the story is way better than the cover!
this was just a really fun, enjoyable, sweet read. Liam and Kim felt like real people, not just flat characters that can so easily become interchangeable across shifter genres. plus this book introduced some new history about how shifters were discriminated against in society which made it more interesting for me and also quite believable. Ever pick up a book just on a whim? That’s what happened with Pride Mates and that whim has turned into an obsession to find every single book in the series. I was ensnared by the way the hero, Liam Morrissey, viewed the heroine, Kim Fraser, in the first chapter and how quickly her life spiraled out of control. In her ignorance, she blithely went from the pan into the fire. My favorite thing is that she dragged the hero into the fire with her, making their relationship smoking hot. It was very fun reading.

Ms. Ashley created a new and vibrant world with Pride Mates and she did an amazing job of introducing all the new rules and regulations of this alternate United States in a very natural and smooth style. What struck me was the unfairness for the shifters. The author must have researched deep to get the details down to the degree they were. Reading about all the restrictions on shifters gave me a claustrophobic feeling and I didn’t like that. Neither did the shifters, which means the writing clearly got the point across to a reader. They were treated as less than second class citizens and faced prejudice at every turn. It was very sad, and it made me angry too.

I liked the mix of magic, the disinformation and misdirection that the shifters had to employ against humans, and their secrets. Secrets can be a good and bad thing and for the purpose of this story,

Ms. Ashley had some of her characters privy to some very bad ones. It’s those very nasty secrets that set the wheels in motion and pushed Kim into the fray.

I enjoyed Kim’s character. She is stubborn, determined, invested in seeing justice done and has ideals and beliefs that justice should and would prevail. She has the moxie to stick by those ideals making her someone to respect but by the same token, makes her a target by people who have no intention of justice seeing the light of day. That is one of the main plot conflicts in Pride Mates and it’s fascinating to watch unfold. It’s good that she’s well educated because everything she’s learned, everything she fought for to get where she was in life, was going to be tested in a most profound manner.

Kim’s fortitude is severely tested by hunky, Liam Morrissey. He’s the go-to guy for shifters and there’s a reason for that which is revealed towards the end of the book. The big reveal was quite exciting and a real page flipper. Before that can happen, however, the hero needs to do a lot of re-thinking about his life, his goals, what’s really going on and also had to face divisions of loyalty. It’s a lot to carry on one’s shoulders but the author created a very capable character that I enjoyed getting to know. One of the best parts was watching him get flustered over his attraction to Kim. He’s very torn because he’s shifter, she’s not, and he’s not sure what to do about it or even what he can do. The whole process of falling in love was quite entertaining. Liam resisted as best he could, as long as he could but eventually, as with all good alpha heroes, he succumbs to the inevitable. What man can resist a healthy dose of lust?

The evil plot came from an unexpected source and what it turns out to be will have lasting ramifications for future books in the series. In this installment, it ramps up the violence quotient so there is a lot of drama and intensity to the telling of the story. Suspense, fighting scenes and tension are well written so a reader is in for a gripping tale. During the down times, other well written scenes include the physical passion between Kim and Liam. I looked forward to those parts because they were emotional and full of feeling, not to mention, quite steamy and satisfying. There is a secondary romance percolating between Liam’s father and their neighbor. Not sure where that one is going but it provided an interesting family and community element to the novel.

As for other secondary characters, I liked Liam’s brother, Sean. Tall, stoic and handsome, the poor guy’s job is a buzzkill for romance. It’s going to take a special kind of woman to be able to bring a smile to Sean’s mouth and a twinkle in his eye and I can’t wait to read the next book because it’s about him.

Ms. Ashley’s talent in creating him and the tease at the end of this story insured an auto-buy for Sean’s story in Primal Bonds. I’m so excited!

Pride Mates is a sure pleaser and a must read for fans of paranormal romance. It’s sexy, hot, exciting and populated with wonderful, well drawn characters. The plot made it hard to put down and the saucy relationship between Liam and Kim made the book a joy to read. It has effective and gritty dialogue when a scene needs it, with sensual teases and genuine humor lightening up the flow allowing a reader to get to know what makes the hero and heroine tick. Ms. Ashley has world built an amazing and rich background for her characters to play in and readers are in for a treat when they pick up their own copy. If this is the quality that I can expect in the next book, then I’m going to be a happy camper for a long time because there is a ton of possibilities for this series, and I can’t wait.

Kim is a very feisty human. I love this character, she is a true heroine. She doesn't give up easily and even though she is ridiculously terrified she doesn't let the shifters see her like that! She has had an alright life but a lonely one, something that he shifters never have. Her family life hasn't been perfect and now she has been left a huge house with know one to share it with. Kim is defending a shifter Brian, an unusual thing for a human to do but she fights it to the bitter end even though it gets her into a lot of trouble on the way!

Liam is the shifter main character, he runs a bar in shifter town and has a father who is head of that area. He's strong k he's loyal and he's IRISH! Yes how awesome is that! Liam lives with his brother Sean, nephew Connor and father Dylan. He is protective to his family and fiercely loyal and just beyond awesome. Expect hugs! This is a very huggy book! Liam has had a happy family life even though he lost his mum and he lost his brother Kenny and his mate along the way.

Honestly this book is unlike any shifter book I have read. The malaes aren't like totally alpha males they have got sense in them and the story line is really well written. I thurilly enjoyed this story and can't wait to read Sean's! This cutie needs his own story! :')
