After School Nightmare is a fun and scary. A gender-confused boy/girl, dreams showing your “true” selves and a love triangle in the making. Mashiro is a boy who has recently been told he needs to pass this one class before he can graduate. It’s a mysterious class that no one talks about, it meets in an infirmary in the basement that isn’t always there and during the class, Mashiro dreams strange, scary things. Mashiro says he’s a boy, but his body says he’s a girl, he meets Kahura, a girl trying...more

I got into manga a few years ago, stopped, started up a few months ago, got frustrated by the on-going nature of the genre turning what started as an interesting plot into boring soap-opera, and finally went trolling for rec-sites. This title was on a top five list of best shojo manga cleverly titled "Manga Before Flowers". (Doubly clever for me because "Boys Before Flowers" got me into my other crack entertainment: Korean Dramas.)

I've already flown through seven volumes (the manga is ten volum...more

10-BOOK SERIES REVIEW.

So, Mashiro Ichijo is intersex person, living life as a boy and keeping away from the others at his boarding school. When he's admitted to a special after-school class, he and the other special students are forced to confront their darkest secrets in order to graduate.

When I began reading this series, I couldn't tell if the interesting and intriguing parts (the classes/"nightmare") were good enough for me to wade through the other parts (Ichijo's relationship issues).

It's u...more

Inoltre, viene delineato anche...more

When I first started reading this I was a little confused but I also forgot about the right to left thing since I was reading it online so I went back to that and it started to flow. The story was bizarre but also an interesting idea. Everyone has their own secrets and no one's life is perfect and I feel that young adults understand that and will be drawn to this story. The idea of sharing a dream world and learning about others while also trying to learn about themselves would be intriguing to...more

Try as I might to be an enthusiast of Manga, I am still in a place where I struggle with understanding the appeal that so many teens have toward this genre. That said, After School Nightmare Vol. 1 kept me interested, and it actually made me have a better understanding of those who appreciate Manga.

This series provides a safe venue for teens to think about sexuality and transgender identity. The concept of a male-identified character with female genitalia being the object of infatuation by fema...more

Although I have said I don't like Manga/graphic novels I went into this series with an open mind especially after reading liking The Runaways. However, I did not enjoy reading this series. I though that the plot was slow moving and I felt like I needed more narrative. I know with manga the pictures are suppose to tell part of the story, I like stories to flow and stopping to see the pictures makes the story go slower.

The drawings were fantastic. They seem typical of manga but they are beautiful....more

synopsis: Mashiro Ichijo is a girls' idol, handsome and kind, but he has been hiding a secret all his life: he's not truly male, nor entirely female. He has the upper body of a male but the lower body of a female. When a mysterious school nurse introduces him to a new class, he finds that in order to graduate he has to go to a world of dreams to find a mysterious key, competing with other classmates to find it. As he struggles with his gender identity, he tries to decide whether he wants to live...more

Mashiro an intersex high schooler who posses as an being completely male. Because Mashiro started menstruating he quit the kendo club in fear that it was his female side that was weak. After noticing many of his fellow schoolmates have been disappearing, he was asked by the school nurse to go to the basement of the school (which was never there before). Before Mashiro knew what was happening, he was brought into an alternate dream world were schoolmates are twisted and deformed to the point of u...more

Manga is difficult to get the hang of when you are first checking it out. Of course there is the obivous "umm, I'm reading this the wrong way!" but I think it goes further than that. Sometimes the stories are a bit strange and it is hard to grasp the story from the quick moving art throughout the books. I have loved anime and manga growing up so I am used to it. Someone who is just starting out may find it confusing. Not only does the reader of After School Nightmare need a little practice with...more

This is a weird manga. The main character is a boy on his top half and a girl on his bottom half. I kinda wish he was just regular old intersex of some variety, and not this fantastical sort. Even if he was a chimaera with a nice even split like that, the female hormones giving him a period would also make his breasts grow.

But, anyhow, moving past that, I said the manga was weird. The kids in this school have a special class they go to once a week, where they dream. And in the dream, they're com...more

I found this manga book strange and confusing. I couldn't fully grasp what was going on and thought that the way in which the word bubbles were laid out was odd. I also found that (as some of us had mentioned when we were reading The Runaways) my eyes were wondering all over the page, unsure of what to read or where to look first. I thought the story was really weird, yet I can see teens being intrigued by it. I can imagine them wanting to find out more and more, but personally I felt that the f...more

Ishijo Mashiro is not quite a he, nor a she, nor a hermaphrodite either. One day he finds he is to take part in an after-school class. If he wants to graduate he must be part of this (literal) nightmare class where students must confront the worst parts of themselves in order to find a key. In the nightmares we see the students physically change to represent the secret they carry. Ishijo is a boy on top and girl below, a girl with a hole in her a face is intent on graduating at all costs, and an...more

It's always refreshing to discover a new manga series with incredible artwork, but it's even better when the story is interesting too. I love this idea and the characters are all very dark. As far as romance goes there are 2 very different options for Mashiro. Kureha is a student who is undergoing the same special class as Mashiro. She has a very dark past, but a promising future. Sou is another student in the same program as Mashiro and Kureha, but he takes it to the extreme. I'm curious to see...more

This was a trippy story. Some great horror elements, amazing sub-plots, back-stories, and characters. While this is considered a shojo (a piece of literature intended for high school girls with elements of romance and beautiful boys in it) Hokago Hokenshitsu twists all the themes and makes them more thought provoking, or at least makes you stop a moment and go "Huh." This is a dark story line, and nothing is as it seems. Which I guess is why I like it. I've read through volume two, and it's rath...more

After finishing the first volume of this manga I went on a desperate hunt for the rest of the series. It captivated my attention quickly with its original storyline that is both disturbing and alluring. The "nightmares" are dark but not cheesy and the relationships are complicated and justified. It flows in such a way that if you are a fan of yaoi, yuri, straight pairings or even all mixed together; you will be satisfied. I found myself supporting whatever direction the author threw me. It goes...more

This was my first experience reading manga and I really enjoyed it. The illustrations depict such raw emotions. I thought this story line was so unique. I liked how the author used the half man half female character to represent all people who question their sexuality. I also thought it was very interesting that the girl who hated men would of course feel comfortable around a "man" who was a woman. I also liked the author choice of the knight to represent a manly character and it turned the worl...more

Although the pictures are very detailed, I did not like the style. After reading The Runaways and American Born Chinese, I felt I was beginning to get the hang of a graphic novel. However, this story is much more complicated than the other graphic novels and the lack of narration only add to the confusion. If I had more experience with graphic novels perhaps the story would be easier to follow. Therefore I feel this book is for the more advanced graphic novel reader. A YA reader should not read...more

I just couldn't get into this manga. The story was strange to say the least and I had a tough time following the dialogue and the pictures were usually no help to me. I don't read manga and maybe that has something to do with my not liking it. I understand that YAs might like it based on the secrets and "who are you, really" premise, but I found it boring and confusing. The dream world thing was interesting, but not really my style. Also, I may sound like an ugly American, but if the story is in...more

I have a hard time relating to Manga, though I know it is very hot and has been for a while now. While I may not personally enjoy it, I can certainly see its appeal. Ichijou personifies many of the emotional difficulties teens are faced with. The idea of a soul whose seperate idenities are at odds with one another, particularly sexual idenities, is intriguing to teens because they themselves are forging their own identities, sexual and otherwise. The imagery, for example birds flying out of woun...more

Intriguing premise for this shojo manga: a hermaphrodite high school student gets invited to join a special class that meets in a secret basement infirmary. The class consists of students bedding down (separately in volume one) and dreaming, entering each other's dreams to find a key that will assist the finder in graduating from the class. In the dream, participants appear as their true selves, which in the case of the main character, who is posing as a male student, means he/she wears a girl's...more

Reading High School Nightmare was kind of strange for me since it has been many years since I have read Manga and it takes a while to get used to. This manga by Setona Mizushiro tells the story of Ichijou Mashiro a popular kid who learns that in order to “graduate” from school he needs to take a class where he has to enter a nightmare world, and btw Ichijou is also hiding the secret that he is half-male half-female! The plot is strange to say the least, but as it got going I started to get in to...more

Not my favorite. The plot seemed to be a mixture of elements lifted from other, better series, with some unsettling sexual/gender dynamics thrown in. Too much going on to address any of it well - gender issues, abandonment, rape, isolation, peter pan syndrome, and unexplained fantasy/horror elements in 200 pages..too much. The art was nothing particularly innovative, and all in all it seemed a middle-of-the-road manga series at best, made visible only by its peculiar sexual themes. Not sure who...more

A great book dealing head on with issues of gender, identity, pain, and recovery-- mature themes handled carefully, honestly, and creatively for a teen audience.
Mashiro is born male on top and female on bottom. He ends up a part of a special after school program where students who are in pain and unsure of themselves fight each other in their dreams to resolve their issues and eventually graduate.
There is much mystery surrounding who is who outside of the dreams, what happened in people's pasts,...more

Exceptional series with a unique, engaging story. Ichijo Mashiro is encouraged to start attending a special after school class. In this class, students (whose identifies are all protected) are put into a sleeping state where they can take a special form in the dream world that mirrors the deep, dark issues they are psychologically struggling with (e.g., rape, incest, sexual identity crisis). Only when a student in this special class comes to terms with their issues and truly gets the strength to...more

I admit I skipped to the reviews for the final volume (10) to see how it ended and I'm very glad I did. The story was thought provoking already (I read the first chapter before I read the vol 10 review). It really deepened once I knew the ending. It's more thought provoking if you know the whole picture and helped me understand the first six pages and especially the first much better, but some people might want to be surprised. If you do choose to stay surprised be prepared to read the whole ser...more

This manga series sort of blew me away when I started reading it, because I didn't know anything about it. Right off the bat, you're introduced to an adrogynous high schooler who is trying to determine whether he's a man or a woman...and he (or she) is taking an after school class where he interacts with fellow students in a dreamworld. A complicated love triangle ensues - one that will surely play out for several books. For a manga, I found it pretty surreal and challenging. And now I know why...more

Mizushiro Setona (水城 せとな or 水城雪可奈) is a popular manga-ka (Japanese comics creator) who started out in the dōjinshi (self published manga) circles. Her first real dabble in the world of creating manga was in 1985 when she participated in the publication of a dōjinshi. She remained active in the dōjinshi world until her debut in 1993 with the short single "Fuyu ga Owarou Toshiteita" (Winter Was Endi...more
