I've been a fan of Joel Friedlander for a long time. As a long-time blog reader, I had read most of the articles in this book, which is a compilation of blog posts organized and edited into a cohesive whole. Even so, I found the re-reading worthwhile.

If you're looking for nuts and bolts details on self-publishing, this is not the book for you. You won't find advice on choosing the best font (something Joel is expert at and covers thoroughly on his blog) or on what software to use to layout the i...more

Immensely readable and helpful. A great guide to self-publishing, marketing and promotion. It was this book that got me onto Twitter as a first step into social networking.

Containing both practical advice and inspiring insights for any author wishing to choose self-publishing as a career choice, this guide is a gem. While an enthusiastic advocate of self-publishing, the author is also realistic about what the requirements and challenges are for the self-published author. Anyone following me on Facebook would know how useful I found this book by the number of times I shared excerpts from it!

With an easy-to-read style and excellent presentation/formatting, this book...more

Joel Friedlander is a well established authority in the self-publishing world and the force behind The BookDesigner website. His old-school self-publishing efforts, before Print On Demand, led to his becoming a provider of customized self-publishing services—a book producer, to use his term. Much of his new book is culled from blog posts of the past years, with an emphasis on the why of self-publishing more than the how.

A Self-Publisher’s Companion is not a technical guide and leans more in the...more

If you have EVER even thought of self publishing you need to read this. There are so many things to consider other than just typing up your masterpiece and throwing it up on Amazon. Joel has made me look at it in a whole new way and really helped frame up what I want from my work.

A great book for beginners to use as a guide to self publishing. Joel Friedlander writes an easy book demystifying the many aspects of the publishing world. He explains the different ways there are to publish from vanity presses to print on demand. I have met many indie authors who don't know the many various options and get stuck with the wrong choices forcing their dreams to die a slow and expensive death. He lists the do's and don't's in clear language and then relates the many ways to market...more

Joel Friedlander's blog TheBookDesigner.com is one of the most well-respected in the self-publishing/small press community. What he says you can take as gospel. He's been there, done that, long before most of us were even aware there WAS such a thing called self-publishing. He's shared his thoughts on various aspects of publishing daily.

From the blog, Joel chose 48 essays that are not so much a how-to, but, as he says, are more of a why-to. And that's important. Because there are tons of great b...more

Very helpful as an introduction to self-publishing for newbies, with lots, more advanced and further reading, at the back.

I learned a couple of things I didn't know. But if you're looking for a book that will teach you how to format, this book isn't it. It's a more general, overall guide to the self-publishing industry and what you can expect to get, in the way of rewards, and what you're going to have to do, in the way of labour.

Advice on avoiding publishing sharks. And lots more. Recommended.
