This was a fantastic debut by Jamie Manning!

“You are strong and immortal, like a vampire. But you are also emotional, and therefore vulnerable, like humans.”

I was pleasantly surprised and satisfied that Blood Born wasn’t “just another” vampire story. I’m so glad I read this because I truly enjoyed Blood Born. This was unique and a refreshing read packed with action.

I was pleasantly surprised and satisfied that Blood Born wasn’t “just another” vampire story. I’m so glad I read this because I truly enjoyed Blood Born. This was unique and a refreshing read packed with action.

The author does a great job creating an extremely likeable cast of characters as well as great imagery and plot. This was not a slow starter by any means. Right from the beginning we are thrust into Avaline’s world. Imagine waking up with an unexplained blood-lust and buried and confined in a dark coffin! I have to admit, I have a huge fear of heights and small confined spaces, and Manning did an excellent job writing and relaying Ava’s emotion right from the start. Ava learns she’s the first of her kind. She's not a complete vampire, she's half vampire, and half human. She possesses both good and bad traits from each species. She is strong and immortal like a vampire, but also emotional, and therefore vulnerable, like human's. Other vampire’s will want to kill her because she possesses what every vampire wants—humanity. Aldric Kruger, a vampire over a thousand-years-old, was the vampire who changed Ava. She wanted nothing more than to be human again and in order to do that she must kill 100 vampires. There was something sinister, yet intriguing about Aldric. I actually grew a fondness for him though. Chance Caldon, a dark-haired hottie with green eyes was Ava's rescuer. Besides saving Ava, Chance has a little secret tucked away of his own.

Ava starts a new school, a new life and meets a group of new friends. Through Blood Born we get to experience the frustrations with Ava as she learns to be a new vampire and her determination to keep her humanity, and make the toughest decision of her life.

I enjoyed the development of these characters and the chemistry between Ava and Chance. He is an oh-so-swoonworthy guy. And, let me tell you, he will warm your insides. He was just so appealing and I loved the way he stood by Ava's side and always had her back. You could really feel the intense chemistry between them. Their bantering only made it that much better. I absolutely LOVED the ending. No, not because it was over, but because it was a fantastic way to lead us to the next installment, Blood Prophecy. Don’t think this is one you know how it’s going to be played out. That’s the beauty behind this fantastic story. Manning knows how to throw a curveball!
Overall, this is one you should definitely read. I can’t wait to read Blood Prophecy!(less)

When the awesome Jamie Manning asked me if I’d read and blurb Blood Born last year, I was beyond flattered. Not only was it my first cover blurb, but the summary for his debut YA sounded amazing, and something I’d have on my shelf. I couldn’t wait to dive in and meet the characters!

Aldric is a little strange to me and mysterious but fits right into the story. The author painted a great picture to display his world of paranormal creatures and I loved reading every minute of it.

Imagine waking up inside of a coffin with no recollection of how you ended up there in the first place. Scary huh? Well that’s what happened to Ava. She doesn’t remember her past or even who her parents were and the only person who can tell her isn’t spilling a word. Her creator, Aldric is teaching Ava how to fight and how to live this new life as a vampire. Her hero, Chance has her back every step of the way but he’s hiding something and refuses to tell her. I can’t say any more otherwise I will spill the beans and I do not want to do that.

I conclude that Blood Born is a MUST READ for 2012, I highly recommend it.

Yara's Review: It's great when you get asked to host a blog tour, there is just the one thing you worry about. Will I love the author's book I just agreed to host a tour for? So its always great to read the book and end up loving it, so you don't have to go email the author back and cancel. So its makes the blog tour process a walk in the part when the the participants also like it. Jamie did a great job with his debut Blood Born and making paranormal and vampires his own. In a genre so popular and flooded with stories that deal with Vampires, I'm always amazed when a new author can create something that hasn't been written before.

In Blood Born we follow Avaline "Ava" Blue, Ava wakes up in a coffin. She is buried alive and pretty much freaking out. Then Chance is there rescuing her from that wooden box. What a hero right? Well Chance is also their for more than just rescuing Ava out of the group. He is there ego help Ava understand what she has become. Ava is now half-human and half-vampire. Ava will meet her maker which is Alric and let's just scything won't be easy between them. Ava wants to be different. She might not know who or what she was before waking up in that coffin, but she is determine to be who she wants now in the future. What is Ava to do when her human hero Chance has been kidnapped? This is all I will spill. If I give you more, I will spoil the story and that's not my style.

Jamie is definitely a debut author to read this year. You will be craving book 2, like a vampire needs blood.

I have been wanting to read this book since Jamie Manning came in the library I work at with an announcement about a book signing. I was finally able to order some young adult books and you better believe this book was in that order.

I am so happy that I got a chance to read this book. Not only did it leave me extremely happy but I loved the ending!

What hooked me about this book are the characters. Written stunningly well, the reader is able to easily slip into the shoes of the characters. I like that Ava and Chance are characters that are written to their age. They sound and act like teenagers.They have aspects to them that make the reader feel as if they can know them like a real person.

Disclaimer: I met this author once, and was intrigued by the story. He did not ask me to review but I thought I would.

Brief overview: Ava wakes up in a coffin and finds out she is vampire--half vampire. With the help of an enigmatic boy she learns to deal with her condition. Along the way she makes friends and enemies...which sums it up.

The biggest thing I liked--was the potential of this writer and story. I liked how fast it read. I gave it a four star--because I can tell this will be a writer to watch. As a YA, I felt the language and the story fit well. There are some great descriptions and characterization. I fully expect good things from this writer.

But there are glitches. I tried not to let that affect how I reviewed the story. I am numbering them:

1. This is not the authors fault (so I didn't rate this accordingly), but I bought this book on nook and the formatting was terrible. There were gaps in sentences, there were whole blank pages and adjusting the font size didn't help. It made it awkward and frustrating to read. I really hope the publisher has corrected this because it drove me nuts and it is one of the reasons it took me so long to finish this book.

2. I have to admit the two things that bothered me story wise were this: She didn't know her past and no one wanted to tell her anything. Which as a reader drove me crazy. Second, Chance, the boy who helps her brings her home and says to stay at his house. His mom is ok with this and she goes to a new school with out signing into the office. I think it would've been cool to have conflict of : The mother objecting having the girl she's never met stay(I would) and the problem of finding out where was she going to stay. Also, how about being questioned at school? You have to have proof of residency--they just accepted her showing up to class. Plus I wondered why didn't the older vampire who was there at her awakening take charge of her? Granted---he starts training her later on.

So those are the two things I had issue with, BUT, as I said the story--the writing has this amazing potential and I liked the POV. I also gave it to my teen to read and she agreed with me on this assessment. (Hey, if you're going to read YA, a good test subject is your teen!)

On the very first page, you see Ava's personality shine through. Her snarky, almost cynical attitude definitely makes this book different. And I loved how well her personality and inner thoughts weren't the typical lovey-dovey, unsure of myself type that I've seen a lot of lately.

Jamie Manning’s Blood Born is a fast-paced, fun, clever, and original take on the vampire novel. What I enjoyed most were the frequent touches of humor throughout the novel, even during the more serious scenes. Ok this book left me hanging so bad. I have to see what happens next!

Blood Born has it's own unique take on Vampires. One that is more humanizing that others (that I've read) in the fact the they can go out during the day under sunlight(no sparkling;) and they live out in the open with the rest of humanity within communities (well some). There’s a lot of mystery and secrets surrounding Ava’s new vampire existence. She has no memory about her past life at all. Since this is the first book in a series, there are hints about Ava and the other vampire players to whet your appetite, but we are in the dark along with Ava for the most part. Ava seems like a normal high school student, but when the fangs come out—watch out. Ava has a great sense of humor though, and I was rooting for her to be strong and hold on to her humanity.

The romance is really well done, and Ava and Chance have a lot of potential. And it doesn’t seem like there’s a love triangle, so thank goodness for that. Chance is a great guy, but he has secrets of his own to keep things interesting. I am very curious to see where their relationship goes in the sequel.

Ava has her own Scooby gang of vampire hunters to help her in her quest. It is a different twist to have a vampire bond with vampire hunters but Ava can use all the help she can get. The fighting and action are exciting and Manning is fearless in putting his characters in danger. There is death and mayhem, and when it’s all over you will be craving the sequel like a newborn vampire craves blood.

Blood Born is witty, action packed, fun, surprising and romantic. And it’s not too scary to read only during during the day, though there is definitely some bloodshed. Recommended for YA paranormal romance fans, this is an enjoyable quick read sure to please those looking for a fresh vampire tale. Bring on the sequel.(less)

Wow! A vampire story written in a different flavor. A sixteen-year-old wakes up with an overpowering hunger. It wasn't a hunger most teenagers have. Ava's appetite was hungry for blood. Her bed was a coffin. Thus, begins this unusual vampire novel. I think it is a good read for Young adults who will enjoy it especially since the likeable characters in the novel are teenagers. DNFed by the second chapter. When the main character asks all these questions about why she was turned and killed, and the characters refuse to answer her because they said it's not their place or they don't want to, it's a very poor writing tool to keep important information from the reader in order to keep the mystery element going.

I'm sick of authors using the "just because" angle in their books. It's bad writing.

How could I not love a book that opens with a girl waking up in a coffin? I can't is the correct answer! Blood Born was an amazing story with lots of secrets and interesting characters to keep one captivated. It was so easy to fall in love with Ava and Chance and just know they were meant to be a couple even if they both tried to deny it. I guess the only thing that kinda bugged me a bit other than the fact that I can't have Chance for myself was the overprotectiveness of him towards Ava. I just...more

This started off Great! and it finished the same way... I loved Blood Born. Jamie has a way with writing that drew me in and kept me engaged in the story. Interesting vampire story, Ava has to kill 100 vampires to get her humanity back. With the help of Chance (hunky boy who she is very attracted to), and vampire hunter friends, she goes on this "mission" while trying to attend high school and pretend to be "human".
