The two cops don't seem to have anything in common. They have never worked the same precinct; they didn't work on the same cases. And the murder weapon is a mystery too. Their throats were torn out and shards of steel were found in the wounds. Whatever happened, happened fast. There were no defensive wounds. Also traces of canidae saliva was found.

Duke and his partner Jimmy are busy investigating any sort of lead. One of the leads takes Duke to a veterinary clinic where he meets Dr. Liz Cunningham. They are instantly attracted to each other and quickly fall in love. Fitting in a romance around a homicide investigation takes some doing but it does make Duke a more well-rounded character. The scene when they first met and Duke reacts with all the savoir-faire of a twelve-year-old was funny. Seeing this responsible cop reduced to stammering made him more human but it also made me wonder how old he actually was.

Some of the chapters are told in the first person from the criminals point of view while other chapters are told in the first person from Duke's point of view. I felt that the writing in this one started out a bit stilted and some of the actions and dialog were unrealistic enough to throw me out of the story. As the story went on, though, I stopped noticing and got caught up in the plot and the hunt for the killer.

A few of the things that tossed me out of the story had to do with names. Duke is named Duke because his father was a big John Wayne fan. Whenever he is introduced to someone and they call him by his police rank - Inspector - he asks that they call him Duke. It doesn't matter who he introduced to, he always asks to be called Duke. And his partner had a name thing too. Whenever he was introduced to people he asked them to call him Jimmy or Nova. It seemed strange that he couldn't decide what he wanted to be called.

The plot was well-developed and fast-paced. Duke does have a TSTL (too stupid to live) moment or two at a crucial spot in the story. After insisting that his cops have backup, he proceeds into a very dangerous situation without any. Luckily, and in the nick of time, his partner does have his back.

This was an engaging story. It is the first book in a planned series. The epilogue and the teaser from the next book at the end of this one hint at much more trouble in store for Duke and his unit. I will be following along on the adventure.

My " in a nutshell" summary...

Duke Becker...Inspector Duke Becker... works with his partner to try to find out who is murdering the police of New York. It's all very complicated and relates to a crime that occurred years earlier.

I want to begin by saying that this is probably the absolute best mystery book I have read since Agatha Christie or Perry Mason. Those are my "go-to" mystery books, and I used to inhale them. For me, Agatha Christie and Perry Mason are the standards by which I judge mysteries, and this is a book I can recommend as highly as those.

For me, Agatha Christie and Perry Mason are the standards by which I judge mysteries, and this is a book I can recommend as highly as those.

I knew I wanted to review this book after the author posted one of the best guest posts ever on my blog. I was concerned that the book may be too violently descriptive, but I can tell you that I was wrong in that department. While the murders are somewhat detailed (and I would not want to see a Hollywood version of this book), I was only horrified and not repulsed by what was described. Don't get me wrong--the murders are horrific, but I felt that the author handled them in such a way so as not to make the reader overly squeamish.

I was also concerned about potential profanity and sex scenes. While I do not approve of sex before marriage, there are no descriptive bedroom scenes--and for that I am grateful. Yes, there was profanity, and while the book could have stood without it, I was not overly offended. It was not as rampant as other books in similar genres.

Enough about any criticisms. This book it absolutely mesmerizing! I almost could not put it down, and I started giving my mom chapter by chapter updates. The story seems so realistic and incredibly well-written. I felt that the characters were so well-developed. And thankfully all the twists and turns actually made sense--although I did not see the conclusion coming! In fact, I thought I had it figured out, and I certainly did not. It is clear that the author knows his setting and genre well.

I found it interesting that this book is considered non-romance. I beg to differ. There is a very hot and heavy romance that will delight the most romantic enthusiast! I look forward to seeing these characters in another book soon.

In short, if you like mysteries, romances, or thrillers, I would say this is a book you will enjoy. Be sure to check it out!

Fantastic read! If you love cop dramas then this is the book for you. Follow Duke Becker and his team as they try and uncover the murder of two cops. Great, realistic dialogue that makes you feel part of the task force. A whole bunch of fantastic supporting characters you feel you're getting to know and as for the plot - it's a page turner and will keep you guessing right until the end! I am looking forward to book two in the series!

How Distracted Did I Get?
For Duke Becker being a cop is in his blood. His father and brother were cops also. Inspector for the head of Homicide Special Investigations Unit, Duke gets the hardest case of his life. Cops are being killed mysteriously and it’s a tough case to crack. Through the investigation he meets Dr. Elizabeth Cunningham who helps with some leads.

This book is a thriller to the core. The narration is fast and attention holding.I sort of found difficult to put down the book for so much was happening and I just needed to know what came next. The surprises, the twists and turns in the plot were neatly packed. I constantly found myself predicting with confidence, what is going to happen next, only to be pleasantly surprised that there was an equally believable alternative.
