This is another fun book by Jan Brett with a Christmas theme. The story features impish trolls again, but unlike Christmas Trolls or Trouble with Trolls, a sweet family of responsible, helpful trolls is depicted. They try to encourage a wayward son to abandon his selfish, irresponsible ways. And, like the prodigal son, he eventually learns his lesson.
It's an entertaining story to read aloud. The illustrations are as marvelous as we've come to expect from this author and have a definite Norwegian...more

Another beautifully illustrated adventure story by Jan Brett. Rollo is a spirited young troll who didn’t want to be bothered by daily chores. After Mama and Papa Troll asked Rollo one too many times to lend a hand with a chore, he decides he has had enough and leaves home for his own adventure. He found many woodland animals to live with, but pandemonium always seems to appear. As Christmas nears, Rollo knows in his heart it is time to return home.

What I like about the book: I loved the illustrations. I always love Brett's illustrations. Not only is Home For Christmas full of Brett's trademark illustrations it also contains a valuable lesson on kindness and responsibility. In true picture book fashion, as much of the story is told in the pictures as in the text. We see Rollo's adventures in the main pictures and text while seeing his family's story in the heart shaped vignettes included in the borders of the pages. This is a great holiday...more

When I picked up Jan Brett’s Home For Christmas at my local library in an effort to kill time before my monthly book-club meeting, I expected what the title was offering — a book about Christmas. As I flipped through the pages, I felt like I was getting ripped off for the story that I had wanted because Christmas really only appears at the end of the story.
I also felt that the story started very abruptly and the layout of the book wasn’t well thought out. When you open the book, on the left-hand...more

Another fantastic picture book from Jan Brett. I love her stories, especially the Scandinavian ones. This one has those wonderful trolls found in some of her other books, with a lesson on kindness and responsibility. Besides the wonderful story, the illustrations are out of this world. There is such detail, not just in the main illustration, but also in the side panels of each page. I've been buying her books for almost 20 years, and look forward to each new one as it comes out.
I read this book to my nephew and it is perfect for Christmas time. The illustrations are beautiful and I always love Jan Brett's borders. I think the scenic view is very pretty as well as the display of the trolls hair, actions, and clothing. The story line is cute as well and it has a good lesson at the end when the troll realizes he really should respect his family.
Jan Brett is one of my favorite author illustrators and I use her books regularly in my classroom...this one would be just for home use because I don't use strong holiday themes at school. I loved her artwork as usual but felt the story was a bit flat compared to the liveliness of Trouble with Trolls and Christmas Trolls.
Rollo is a little wild troll who doesn't like doing anything his family wants him to do, so he runs away and lives with various animals in the woods. As always, the pictures are AWESOME and the story kept my 5 year old's attention very well. He loved seeing what animal Rollo would pick next to live with.
As always, Jan Brett's illustrations are reason enough to pick up this book. I love her artistry. Rollo the troll learns a great lesson about the importance of kindness to others. It's a nice book, but not my favorite. When I read it to my kindy and 1st graders, they were interested, but not in love with the story.
