Prince of Ravenscar by Catherine Coulter.
It was okay, a lot of silly dialog but I did like that the 2 main female characters were pretty strong women, especially for 1831.
I listened to this book and though the reader, Anne Flosnik, has a lovely speaking voice she doesn't do a good job with the characters' voices. One of the women sounded a male character throughout the book and very often it was difficult to tell when she switched characters speaking.

I have enjoyed this authors written word for many-a-year, until I read ‘The Valcourt Heiress’. I was disappointed and disillusioned by her writing, never thinking to pick up any of her upcoming novels. And then LibraryThing.com has offered this one and I thought, why not?! I’ll give CC one more chance.
I was honestly afraid to pick it up. I didn’t want this book to be bad as the previous one. I wanted to WILL it to be good. It took me months to finally succumb and read it, that’s how afraid I wa...more

I've never read a Catherine Coulter novel and that seems to be the key to enjoyment of this book. Julian Monroe is the "Prince" of Ravenscar - really he's the second son of the Duke, but the true heir of his father's heart. Born to the Duke's much younger second wife, Julian grows into a handsome, kind man, the lord of Ravenscar whose hobby just happens to be smuggling goods. He has returned to England after a 3 year absence caused by grief over the mysterious death of his wife, Lilly. His forme...more
A beautiful book! The description of the characters, places, clothes… and the hair, my goodness, the amazing hair these women have! :) Beautiful! If you enjoy historical romance you should definitely read this book! The ‘Prince of Ravenscar’ is a ‘Sherbrooke’ novel and I’m now looking forward to re-reading those to once again visit old friends (there are a couple in here!) and see where these new ones fit in!

Sophie’s mother, Bethanne, had been Julian’s mother, Corinne’s, best friend. The two had always hoped their families would be tied together through Julian and Sophie, so when it’s time for Sophie’s come-out, a little late because of the mourning period after her mom died, Julian is maneuvered into meeting her. Along for the ride are Roxanne, Bethanne’s much younger sister who is handling her niece’s come-out, and Devlin, Julian’s nephew who is only a few years younger than him and the current du...more

This was a fun historical romance, although parts of it seemed a trifle far-fetched. I'm no historian, but is the freedom the characters (read: women) experienced typical for such a repressive time period?
I was glad to see Catherine Coulter revisit historicals. I enjoyed her contemporary FBI series, but I admit to getting a little bored with them.

This is not my normal fare but I received a copy from the publisher through Good Reads and I love to branch out into different genres thus was very excited to dive in. Because I don’t read this genre typically I must admit all the British peerage references were a little distracting/confusing for me. I know there are readers who will only pick up books featuring dukes and barons but this is so not my bailiwick thus it made the start of the book somewhat slow as I tried to sort out all the charac...more
I have to say that this may not be one of Coulter's best novels. It was cute and romantic, at times, but lacked a clear focus. While the writing is beautifully descriptive and full of imagery, it lacks a clear romantic plot and quite frankly does a total 180 in the middle of the novel as to which couples will end up together as if Coulter changed her mind after having finished half of the novel and decided not to give any explanations or go back and revise the beginning of the novel.

Actual rating is probably 3.75 stars, but I'm bumping it up to four because any book that keeps me reading until 3:30am is doing something right.

As a fan of the author, and historical romance, this book was def on my "to read" list of books. I've enjoyed other historical romances by this author (especially the characters in the Sherbrooke novels), so was very excited to see this book was a part of that series. I thought the author did a great job of bringing readers into the story, and absolutely loved her use of wit and humor. I thoroughly enjoyed Julian, Devlin, Sophie, and Roxanne's characters, and enjoyed revisiting some of the chara...more

MY BOOK DESCRIPTION FOR THE PRINCE OF RAVENSCAR:
Having spent three years away from Ravenscar mourning the loss of his wife, Julian returns home. Most everyone has accepted that Lily has committed suicide, but her brother, Richard, still blames Julian. Julian doesn’t know what to believe. He knows he didn’t kill Lily, but he doesn’t really believe she killed herself either. It’s an unsolved mystery.

It was slow paced with a ton of unneeded prose. The writer leads you one way and then quickly changes direction. As that may be good for the suspense part of the story. That is quite disturbing in the romance section. I thought certain characters were heading to match up with certain other characters and then out of th blue they fall for other characters. The emotions that the writer should be building to have the reader fall in love with the characters and their relationship were shattered in a...more
This book was ok - a fast read. However, this is after all supposed to be a romance novel, so i found that it was all over the place with the 2 heros and 2 heorines. I think someone mentioned this before me - at the beginning we are led to believe that Julian likes Roxanne (because it was written that he was "marveling" her red hair, etc...and paid no attention to Sophie, too young for him...) while Devlin kept commenting on Sophie's beauty. So i was assuming that would be the "twist" in the lov...more
I know that Coulter has branched out to suspense, which is clearly where her interest now lies. This book felt like her publisher begged for "one last romance" and Coulter reluctantly agreed. I willing to suspend a lot of disbelief, but this book contained not one, but two, young misses who would have been stoned by polite society and more run on sentences and non sequiturs than you can shake a stick at. I died laughing when a hero commented on the absurd ramblings of one of the heroines with hi...more
I liked this book and think perhaps should go back and read others in the series. Julian's mother has picked out a woman to be his new bride, now that he has finally returned home. Humoring his mother he agrees to meet Sophie, his mother's best friends daughter. Things don't appear to go the mothers way because of Roxanne, somehow kin to Sophie. But then no one really figured in Devlin, Julian's step-nephew (I think).

I blew through this book in less than 24 hrs. I enjoyed it!
It was interesting to read about some of the ins and outs of English society of this time period. The characters were interesting and meshed well together. The story line was sound and intriguing, and the development of the romance was quite enjoyable. The main characters seem like a fun group of people.

AS part of the Sherbrooke series, you may think that you need to read the other books to understand what is going on in this one. I had not read any of the others and had no problem as this is written in what can be considered a “stand alone” type novel. And it is a good thing too because I didn’t know enough about this author or her books to invest in more of them.

I have been a read of Catherine Coulter's historical romances for years, reading all multiple series. This addition to the Bride Series while witty in its exchanges falls completely flat in the passion department. A few kisses over the last 100 pages is the extent of any "adult" contact between characters. While this isn't a must have for me to read, Ms. Coulter does it so beautifully and romantically where others can be downright crass, I was looking forward to that again here, but much to my s...more
Whatever was I thinking? This novel, for young women raised on the Cinderella story, is another fairy tale about 3 beautiful, single, clever women and 3 handsome, rich (even titled) single men and how their love stories unfold. The reference to a vampire (the book was published in 2011) leads to a sub-story in that one of the men is pale and pretends to be a vampire and must stay out of the sun. There are murders, kidnappings, smuggling (of sorts) and family intrigue. I finished it because I wan...more

A typical romance that I failed to completely get into. First of all, I was hoping the couples would align slightly differently. I thought Julian and Roxanne were better suited together instead of Julian and Sophie. Secondly, I felt like I never got to really know several characters. I truly appreciate knowing a character's background and a psychological depth to the story, but this novel merely skims the surface rather than digging in deep. Finally, the author must have a strange sense of justi...more
I am tired of my favorite writers becoming cutsy and boring. This book said it was a Sherbrook novel, it wasn't at ALL about anyone Sherbrook, just a mention of some in the area basically. And all of the sudden they are in love and getting married. What happend to romance novels being about the love and the struggle and the characters themselves. This was more about a plot of who done it and even that was superficial. The characters didnt develope, they were supposed to be funny and cute but tha...more
A fast paced historical that was almost two stories in one. I loved the personalities of Sophie and Roxanne, women ahead of their time. Even though I figured out who was responsible for the crime 3 years ago, I did not know the why and was interested enough to keep reading. The romance, intrigue and adventure kept me reading as well. We are treated to a couple of characters that are fun to hate and wonder if there is a chance for them to redeem themselves. It was fun to have a couple of characte...more
Having read and enjoyed Catherine Coulter's earlier Sherbrooke novels, I was a surprised by this one. I started off enjoying the story and then it took and about face in the middle and ended up going in different direction, especially romantic pairs wise. The identity of the killer was not a great surprise, but with the hints strewn through out the book, it wasn't very hard to guess. I don't know but for some reason, the characters seemed written more as if they were contemporary characters, rat...more
Ooo... this is a double love story from Catherine Coulter. And it involves Devlin the rumored vampire from previous books.
If you are a Coulter fan, I'm pretty sure you'll hate this book. This is not in her usual style. The story is a bit frenetic and jumps around a LOT. Especially with the extra love story. I loved Devlin's story, but felt like we didn't get to see enough of Nicholas, the supposed protagonist of the story. At least, that's what the back-cover-blurb was touting.

Ms. Coulter is one of my favourite romance authors. I spend the money for her hardback books. As of late, her historical romances are not doing it for me anymore. Perhaps my tastes have changed. I enjoyed the Sherbrooke series and was sad when it ended. The last ones with the twins, that was a lovely good-bye to the series. Ms. Coulter should have left it that way. This new one, (the blurb is wrong with the names), Julian Monroe is 32 and his mother wants him to marry again. This time, to her de...more
Catherine Coulter has always been a favorite romance writer of mine so I was really excited about getting my hands on this book. It was an uncorrected proof copy, which might explain why I felt like the book was still rather unpolished.

The jacket synopsis was probably the most well-crafted part of the book. What plot there was meandered through many rabbit trails to a sudden "Oh, look, the book just ended" happy place where all loose ends came together into a random big shiny bow. The characters said much but did little, and I didn't like any of them. I did appreciate the specific mention of celibacy-until-marriage, but it was rather undermined by A) equal mention of past "escapades" and B) enough innuendo to make action antic...more
So, picked this one up in the new release section... I've read Coulter before but now I have to go back and see what the heck some of her books were because this one was a little hard for me. I liked the story idea but it was a little slow, too much time going between houses, too many drama scenes etc. Then the there was the character who pretended to be a vampire and that just made me want to throw in the towel. I give it three stars because she's a good writer. This one just wasn't for me.
