Friday night at the Orbit Drive-in: a circus of noise, sex, teenage hormones, B-movie blood, and popcorn. On a cool, crisp summer night, with the Texas stars shining down like rattlesnake eyes, movie-goers for the All-Night Horror Show are trapped in the drive-in by a demonic-looking comet. Then the fun begins. If the movie-goers try to leave, their bodies dissolve into go ...more

5 stelline pienissime!

i really wanted to love this book because it has all of the elements of something i should like--exploitation films & a big ol' drive-in theater, cannibalism, aliems, etc., but after a while, there was just too much. i enjoyed the first novel the most, the second was merely okay, and the third one probably shouldn't have come to fruition--although, i actually did really like the ending. which surprised me! here i am dragging through the last chapters thinking 'is this ever going to end? plea ...more

Popcorn King, where have you been all my life?

Lansdale has long been on my list of "I need to get into that guy's work some time" authors. I was checking out a list of Most Disturbing Books Ever, and Drive-In was mentioned in the comments. I was not disappointed. This was a gruesome read, with depraved violence presented with a nonchalance that may be more disturbing than the violence itself. It reads like a cartoon, the kind you watch when you're tripping with your buddies and don't even realiz

Tallywackers, cannibalism, debauchery, and more! Or maybe it's a big old mirror turned on society as a whole. Either way, Lansdale has an amazing way of "serving it up," whether from the drive-in concession stand or straight into your mind with his unforgettable phrasing. What a work!

Die Drive-In Trilogie war mein zweites Buch von Joe R. Lansdale nach "Das Dickicht". Während "Das Dickicht" sich mehr in Richtung Western orientierte, geht DRIVE-IN eher Richtung ... ja, Richtung was eigentlich? Gute Frage.

From Joe R. Lansdale hisownself comes a cult classic trilogy: a madcap mash-up of splatterpunk horror, black comedy, absurdist sci-fi, and psychotronic surrealism.

In the first installment, The Drive-In: A ‘B’ Movie with Blood and Popcorn, Made in Texas, a group of moviegoers are mysteriously trapped in a drive-in theater. What follows is a nightmare of wanton violence, cannibalism, supernatural mayhem, and overflowing toilets. Imagine a cross between The Twilight Zone, The Lord of the Flies, and

The trilogy of critically acclaimed and cult-favorite "Drive In" novels by Joe Lansdale is collected for the first time in one volume. The saga is a shaggy dog tale - a splatter/horror/sci-fi/apocalyptic mutant that's set in and styled after the very drive-in B-movie culture it tributes.

The setup: four friends join the legion of drive-in fanatics at the all-night horror movie marathon one Friday night at the Orbit Drive-In in Nacogdoches, TX.

It turns into a real horror show when a mysterious re
Lansdale's cult novel, The Drive-In, reads just like a gore-filled B-movie, complete with insanely unbelievable scenarios, off-beat characters, and fantastic one-liners. Part horror, part sci-fi, part totem to the savagery of mankind, this is an incredibly fun book to read and a darkly satirical romp though the pop-culture wasteland of 80s Americana. Popcorn, cannibalism, and crucifixions, oh my!

Picking up directly where The Drive-In left off, The Drive-in 2 lacks the punch and fun-factor of the

Three short novels in one.....written years apart by the Texas wonderman, Joe R. Lansdale. All are a combination of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and funny. The first book (The Drive-In) seemed more focussed on horror; the 2nd (The Drive-in 2) was a sci-fi adventure; and the third (The Drive-In 3: The Bus Tour) was pure fantasy and lots of fun. I did roll my eyes a lot while I read these, but so what....I enjoyed them all.

(I have read only the first novel in this series, but there doesn't seem to be a separate listing for it on Goodreads.)

The Drive In is an exercise in splatterpunk and general outrageousness that misfires as often as it hits its mark. A pick-up load of high school buddies attends the all-night horror show at the local drive in. During the second feature a fiery red meteor hurtles towards the drive in, halts itself just over the screens, and breaks into a toothy, malignant grin. Things go downhill

Io amo Lansdale.

This book made me feel nauseous. Rather like something slimy and evil had crawled in through my belly button in the middle of the night, painted nasty words on my intestines in its own excrement, and left a trail of tears down my thighs on the way out. It also reminded me why I try to avoid horror. Out of fairness, because nothing that elicits that strong of a reaction could have been poorly done, it still gets a decent rating.

We are the drive in mutants,
we are sick,
we are disgusting.
We believe in blood,
in breasts
and in beasts.
If life had a vomit meter,
we'd be off the scale.
As long as one sigle drive in remains on the planet Earth,
we will party like jungle animals,
we will boogie till we puke.
The drive in will never die.

This one is a little hard to rate accurately, as it is a collection of three novels. The first one, the original "Drive-In" is a 5 star book. It is absolutely insane, and I think it was the original Bizarro fiction novel. After that, the novels decrease in quality a bit. The second one is great fun, if a little brief. The third felt too long to me, and I thought Lansdale made a mistake in trying to explain the whole thing. I liked how in the first two novels, nothing is ever really explained. It ...more

This felt as one of those moments when the author created a truly original work of genius and found himself with a third chapter and only a spattering of good material which seemed elongated to fill a quota of page numbers; the first two books are excellent, well paced, with a big scary monster in each and enough holy crap moments to keep anyone entertained, but I felt the third book was sluggish, with a lot of mush that just bored me.
