As a fan of Jack Bauer and 24 I saw this blurb and immediately downloaded GIDEON’S WAR and began reading:

Howard Gordon was producer of the TV series 24, one of my all-time favorite shows. The plot twists, pacing and character interaction are all reminiscent of that show. Unfortunately, the book didn't deliver an edge-of-the-seat experience. When the author is billed as the executive producer of 24, I don't know what one should reasonably expect besides some cheap thrills. Gordon's debut effort provides that and so much more. Sexism is there ("As the water cascaded over her naked body, Kate realized that this was the first time she had been naked near a man in two years."). Islamophobia too (insurgents are consistently referred to as "jihadis" and not the more appropriate title of "insurgents"). Not to mention a very predictable plo...more
(As with all of my reviews, I'm going to give you my opinion; if you wanted to know what the book was about you would read the synopsis... Never quite understood why people write a review that they have copied from the book jacket). Anyway......
What a good read! Not for the rookie reader but the true journeyman reader will love it. After reading a few clunkers lately this book was a breath of fresh air. I do hope this is turned into a series and both brothers work together in the next one....

While this book was fast-paced, it wasn't my cup of tea. Too predictable, with the James Bond-like action, the love interest, the ending. Also not a big fan of the constant reference the bad guys as jihadis and Muslim terrorists (government labels that fearful people have gravitated toward using) rather than insurgents or just plain bad guys, like all the other good action novels out there.

I am a huge huge fan of 24 and the moment I seen this book by Howard Gordon in a charity shop I grabbed it with both hands. I was expecting suspense, twists, drama, and an action thriller plot! I am a sucker for new authors who have been writers / producers associated with successful TV shows such as Sidney Sheldon and Stephen Cannell. Such was the case with Mr. Gordon and the immensely popular show 24. That success didn't transfer here. This story had action scenarios that were not to be believed happening one after another and our hero managed them all safely, rescued his allegedly dead brother and got the girl. Oh Brother.
I really wanted to love this book based on my affinity for "24" and the rave reviews from a few favorite authors. The first half I was thinking the book should have been called "Gideon's Luck" after way too many strokes of fortune for the main character. The last half started to redeem itself but spoiled the effort during the last couple of pages that are worthy for the end of a Roger Moore 007 movie. The story opens up with potential. Reminiscent of some Michael Crichton. Ending was hurried. What a few hundred pages to build up, ended in a few. I think Gordon probably started working on a new television show during the writing of this novel and had to end it quick. At one point, Gideon thinks his brother dead, but uncovers him tied up in a locker. ???

So, I've never seen 24 so I didn't have any preconcieved ideas. If being a producer makes you a great writer, I guess I should try producing something first. I thought this was a great story. Other than the fact that a few feats of the protaginist were a bit unrealistic. But then I reminded myself that I was reading Fiction and I got over it. I'm looking forward to more books in this series. In other words, please write more books.
Overall this was a decent read, but it is very apparent that Mr. Gordon has experience as a TV script writer. Some of the scenes in the book read more like screen direction than novel excerpts. And the romance toward the end between Gideon and Kate - it felt way too forced, like it was inserted as opposed to growing organically. But, like a said, a decent read, overall.

This is a fun, vaguely predictable shoot-em-up. Had the pleasure of spending some time with author Howard Gordon, who's a very smart, nice public policy wonk, in addition to being a TV producer. Would be happy to read anything he writs.
Great first up novel made this an enjoyable read, while the main characters were believable and about whom one could feel empathy... Await the follow up novel and development of Gideon and Kate's relationship.
I actually read the early release as "Gideon's War" and it was pretty good, but needed a little tightening up of the story line.

Gideon's War is the 1st book I have read by Howard Gordon. It certainly won't be my last. Set in post 9/11 it is a story of espionage, insurgents, betrayal and the belief in brothers.
Good summer read -- fast paced -- by the guy who was the Executive Producer of 24. If you liked that TV show, you'll love this....

Jack Bauer has some competition. If you were a fan of 24 than you should read this books. Has as many twists and turns as a whole season of 24.
Written by the guy who produced the tv show 24, so I thought it would be better. A page turner in middle, but just OK.
This was quite good for a first time author. It did have a similar pace to the tv show, 24, for which Gordon was an executive producer. A few of the scenarios were a bit hard to believe but overall a pretty good read.
I liked the book for the most part but some events were just too over the top and too many deus ex machina interruptions.
