I am falling in love with William Joyce! And to think I only recently discovered him. Meghan loaned me 2 of his other books after I raved about The Leaf Men ---Dinosaur Bob and this one. Dinosaur Bob is cute, but George Shrinks is wonderful! You know a book is great when your little one can't stop giggling at the pictures! Very simple storyline with excellent illustrations that can appeal to a wide age range!

George Shrinks is a work of fantasy and is intended for primary readers. George the main character wakes up to find that he has shrunk. His parents left a list of things for George to do while they are gone. George has to complete all of these things while his is small. George has fun completing his chores because he can do fun things like ride on top of the sponge while he does the dishes.
I gave George Shrinks three stars because there was not much to the plot. George didn't have trou More...

This cover of this story catches the reader’s attention right away. The title and image on the cover (where we are looking down at George who is half the size of the books on the book shelf) instantly makes the reader wonder how did George shrink?! The dedication is embedded into an image, where we see George crouching out of sight of an oversized cat, forshadowing the resolution of the story. Again, the reader wonders how did George shrink?! We then find out George has dreamed of being small

I enjoyed reading George Shrinks. I thought that kids would find this book entertaining and I'm sure many of them would love to add on and share what would happen if they would shrink.
The pictures seemed a little old fashioned to me, but they were done well. Seeing everything compared to George's size was fun. I think it could've been better if it was seen from his perspective. Either way, it reminded me of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movie.

George Shrinks by William Joyce is an imaginative story of what would happen if you shrank for a day. The illustrations are all full bled single page images that are bordered on the bottom with the text against a white background. The text is in the form of a letter written by his parents about what his chores are for the day. Without the pictures, reading the words would be boring and would seem like a regular day for George. Fortunately, the pictures add life to the text. It shows how Geo

This book is very simple would be perfect for kindergartners. The pictures in this book are beautiful too. Even though this book is short it has a unique craft to it. The entire book is a letter to George from his parents. Each page is a line from the letter and has George doing what that line said but not in the way his parents met. So the craft that could be taught would be to write a letter for the entire piece of work.

I loved this book. This is a great book to teach the concept of large and small. George has a vivid imagination that can land him in trouble. I read this book to my daughter and we pointed out all the things George did while he was little, that is easy for us to do because we are big. Teaching the concept of large and small with this book is very easy and entertaining.

George has always dreamed of being small, sometimes you end up getting what you wish for. Sooner then George realizes it, he is 3 inches tall. Even though he is 3 inches tall, George still tries to complete the chores his parents have left him. He also tries to mange babysitting his younger brother, who is much bigger then he is.

I would give this one and a half stars.
The pictures are well done, and the story is humorous and affectionate. I have liked this story for years now, and every time I reread it, it reminds me of happy times. Later on, a PBS television series was even based on this book! :-)

This book is great for students to use their imagination. A great writing assignment for this would be "Can you imagine if you shrunk?" This book is also appropriate for emerging readers and English Language Learners as there are some pages that only have illustrations.

I always enjoy interesting stories by William Joyce. This was a short book about a boy who wakes up to find out he has shrunk. He is doing things his mom told him to do while she was gone like brush his teeth and wash the dishes, which are harder to do when you are tiny.

George discovers that all of his dreams have come true when he awakens to find himself shrunken. I love the inventive ways George finds to complete his chores despite his small stature. This would be a great story to read to small children to evoke their imaginations

This is an adorable story. I thought it was a little easy for my daughter's reading level, but the book made up for it with the picture only pages where we speculated what was going to happen and why. She really got into this book because it was a 'fun' read.

This is a nice book to read students as young as pre-K. George brushes his teeth, washes dishes, and does many other chores his parents left a note for him to do while he's small. Young children will enjoy the illustrations, and they can easily pretend to read it after hearing the story.

I remember this book from Reading Rainbow. Love, love, love the illustrations depicting George's adventures of doing everyday things (making the bed, doing dishes, taking out the trash) while being very small in our "normal" sized world.

Oh the story of George! I was amazed to run across this book again as a college student because I remember my mom reading this to me ALL of the time. I was intrigued by the illustrations. A book that I wish to own one day.

This book was a funny and very entertaining story about a boy who shrinks one day. It is all in his imagination, but fun to read nonetheless. I would use this book to discuss creative writing and plot lines.

Very inventive story, I love how George goes about doing his chores even when he is only 6 inches tall. Children will love imagining their day as a tiny person. Can write about what it would be like.

My favorite thing to see is the naughty kitty in this story. I like to turn to the back where the kitty is trying to eat George and then he explodes back into his big self.

This book could be used for problem solving skills and to teach responsiblity because George's parents left him a list of things to do before they returned home.

not much detail in the story, the boy was dreaming that he shrank and had to do the list of chores his parents left him even though he was small. Fantasy.

Cute book of how George conquers his day when he wakes up much smaller than his normal size. My kids always liked the part where he is flying the airplane.

Really cute book about a little boy who shrinks and his parents leave a ton of chores to do.
It can be used to teach Fractions and Length. 3rd grade

George shrinks down and tries to complete his list of chores his parents left him. Problem solving is a good point to make.

George was small then when he was under the blanket he grew again. When this happened it scared the cat. That is so funny.

An everyday list of tasks (brush your teeth, take out the garbage) become adventures when George wakes up miniature size.

Good for big small comparative. sequencing and prediction can be used with this story.

This book is very clever, and filled with imagination. The text and pictures blend together perfectly, each telling an integral part of the story that could not exist on its own. I've read one other William Joyce book, Dinosaur Bob and His Adventures with the Family Lazardo, which was enjoyable, but not very memorable for me. This one, on the other hand, could easily become a favorite, as it thoroughly fits my idea of the perfect picture book.

Fun. My four-year-old couldn't get enough of it. I like his illustration style--retro-50's.
