The story focuses on John O Banion, the host of the it Sunday morning political talk show, and what happens to his life when he is abducted by aliens (actually not real aliens, but rather MJ-12, the covert US government department charged with fabricating the entire UFO phenomenon in order to increase military funding). The story is really about a man’s reaction to discovering “truth”, and what he will risk (his comfortable life) in order to spread that truth. Overall, a quick read with o...more

This is the first book I have read by Christopher Buckley and I am pretty happy with it. At first I wasn't sure how I would like it when it started with the talk show and the Washington political scene. I am definitely not savy when it comes to politics. I thought I would not understand the plot, the theme, the characters, etc. But that's what made Buckley such a great writer for me. He write so well that I could both understand and enjoy this political satire.

Another aspect of this book I ...more

Little Green Men is Buckley at his best. It is a well-imagines satire of the goings-on in Washington: this time, a super-secret government organization is responsible for making sure that both the American people and the Russians maintain their belief in aliens (which they do by abducting farmers and mutilating cows); until a disgruntled employee initiates the abduction (twice) of a well-respected insider and pundit who goes on a mission (with millions of supporters) to bring extraterrestrial ...more

I have a friend, John, who has long been a fan of Christopher Buckely's novels and I've never been able to get into them. But, I have another friend, Jeannie (isn't is amazing to have such good friends?) who just sent me his latest and either the timing was right or this is the best one. Buckley's tongue has been graphed into his cheek. This is about the covert (very covert) operation of the federal government to convince the populace that there are actually UFO's. The program was put into place...more

I picked this book up from a bargain bin on a whim years ago. Politics and Washington are typically not my thing and perhaps a stray sci-fi book in my library was the closest connection I had to begin with. I had a hunch about this book, though.
It was not my favorite Christopher Buckley novel, but as the first of his I read, it sparked me to go out and read 3 others in quick succession. I would recommend his other books first, but for a fan of Buckley, "Little Green Men" i...more

I have to say I was a little disappointed that this book was not as engaging as Florence of Arabia and Boomsday (which I am currently reading). Its premise intrigued me (I'm always a sucker for conspiracy theories), but after a 100 pgs., I kind of had to force myself to finish it. Do not get me wrong, moments in the book are tremendously hilarious, and the concept is fresh and thought-provoking.

Pretty funny book--maybe too many Washington inside jokes at the beginning. About a Larry King-like-figure who becomes a UFO activist after being abducted. Did you know some insiders say the government staged UFO sightings in the 50s (60s?) as a way to garner support for funding space/defense projects? This is based on the premise that the practice never actually stopped, just escalated.

kinda funny, but not in that laugh out loud way. In fact its more "cute" than funny. I didn't chuckle out loud till about page 296 (its 300 pages). I found the writing style a bit jumbled at first but I got used to it. a creative little story, more political than I expected. I thought there might be some actual aliens in it but apparently not.

Chris Buckley (son of the famous sire) has written the funniest and probably most accurate account of notion of alien visitation, giving the most probable explanation for the wide-spread belief among so many Americans that aliens are among us. Hilarious and fun, this book is a delight to read.

From the same author as "Thank You For Smoking," this amusing modern-day romp uses satire & wit to move the story along. I enjoyed it, and may seek out other titles from this author in future.

This book's premise is that alien abductions are real but they are coordinated by the government! It's really about the power of the media and capturing public opinion. I htought this book was quite funny although not quite as good as "Boomsday" or "No Way to Treat a First Lady."

This book starts out strong with a lot of potential but fizzes out at the end when the incredulity of its premise fails to deliver anything amusing or interesting.

I think they're going to make it into a movie, which is good since it reads like a screenplay.

Listened to this on audio traversing to and from work over the past 2 weeks. Lost momentum with it--plot became a little bit drawn out and silly, but I did enjoy the witty and descriptive word craft that provided a few laugh out loud moments.

This is a clever little novel about a political talk show heavyweight who is convinced that he has been abducted by aliens. It has a few twists to keep you guessing, but is generally entertaining with its educated and subtle humor.

This is my least favorite of the Buckley books I've read so far. The plot seems the most cliched - and the least politically savvy - and the characters the least interesting. Still, it was a funny, enjoyable, easy read.

Wow, this book sucks. I really don't... I can't even put into words... Look, I finished this book out of principle, but it totally wasted hours of my life I'll never get back so who's the asshole? That's right. Me.

This is a fun way to kill a few hours on a flight. I wasn't blown away, but almost burst out laughing several times on public transportation which would've caused much confusion amongst the Polish cleaning ladies.

this was a twistedly witty, satirical look at American culture, Washington insiders, the media, NASA, UFO enthusiasts and high-profile lawyers - and, just outrageous enough to make it true-to-life funny!

Hysterical story of a man who works for a very secret government agency responsible for staging alien kidnapping, until he goes after a Tim Russert-like character with hillarious results.

This is another funny novel by Christopher Buckley, but it places third to Thank You for Smoking and No Way to Treat a First Lady, and I'd say it is even with Boomsday.
