So many of these short stories made me stop and think when they "ended" - In other words, they didn't really end on the written page! I found sometimes I was lost in thought about where the story went after the author's words ceased. I was horrified by some of them too. Good thing I have a night light ;)

...more

All short stories in this book are contest winners. The main rule of the contest was each submission had to be fifty-five words or less and tell a story. The ones selected for publication cover a wide range of themes including murder, love, terror and suspense. Above all, these stories are entertaining, cleverly written and full of surprises, typically at the end. Many times I read a story twice or even three times to appreciate the scope and nuances offered in such a meager serving of words.

Fun idea: write a short story using 55 words. Could be fun to do with kids in a classroom.

This collection is full of just such stories. Some were good. Some weren't. The thing I enjoyed about it was that the whole book can be read by a good reader in about an hour (even though the book is just over 200 pages) and people (students) who hate reading, or claim they don't have time, or say that reading is boring can pick this up and read a whole story in a minute or two. It could be a useful tool in

since each story is only 55 words, sometimes some of the meaning gets lost in the first reading. I ended up reading most of the storie two times each to fully understand them.
It's a cute concept.
Some stories were very powerful.

Once I started to read this book, I was inspired to write stories in the same format. Only 55 words.
And it was sooo damn difficult. Salute to the writers whose story were published in this book. They can tell a lot of things by only a little words.

Even though each story was only one page, each was even more dramatic or ironic than the last. Great for someone who wants to read but only has a limited reading time.

Entertaining collection of super short stories. It's impressive how well some of these stories turn out, with so few words. While the surprise ending seems to be a good tool with this kind of story, some of the endings were way too cheesy. That said, this book is a good resource for teachers of all sorts: creative writing teachers, of course, and also teachers of ESL or EFL who have adult students, like myself.

I just received a book via bookring (one I'd forgotten I'd joined, to be honest!), and I must say, it was a blast. Basically, it is a book of 55 word (or less) short stories. And though the theme tends to be love and/or death (heh), I thought I'd bring it (a) to the attention of all ye bookcrossers here in chit-chat land, and (b) extend the gauntlet- writers, write! Do in 55 words what most do in... uh... more. T'is a very fun exercise, if nothing else.

Like many short story collections, this one was hit-or-miss, sometimes more miss than hit. However, there were some fantastic short stories that adhered to the 55-words-or-less requirement of this collection.

I read this in preparation for a teen scary-story-storytime, hoping to find some good short stories. I found a few that could work, and I found some that were impressive in other ways.

However, I felt the artwork was distracting and less serious than the stories themselves.

At best the stories within have some pith or a minor surprise. Many of these revolve around someone dying or being the opposite gender to what you had expected. These are mostly much less clever than they think they are. However, so strike a genuine chord. I mean, look, they're never going to rival War and Peace for insight into the human condition but they can amuse, surprise or cause some response and there is enough in here to enjoy. Let's face it, even if you hate one, at 55 words it is over ...more

The back of the book makes the bold proclamation that you won't be able to stop at just one. This is true.

It's an intriguing concept, an entire story in 55 words. However because it is rare that you can stop at just one in a sitting I found they became fairly repetitive. There were some excellent stories, some duds and a bunch of mediocre ones.

This is a quick read and a nice pick up and put down at your leisure type of read but it wouldn't hold my attention for any considerable length of time.

One hundred and fifty or so stories, each in 55 words. And most of them pretty good stories, amazingly.
Here is one that pokes fun at the 55-word rule:

Pg 100
"Fifty-five," she whispered to him. "Fifty-five miles per hour?" "No, words! That's all we've got! Hurry, please!"
Perspiration trickled down his neck; he stepped harder on the accelerator. "But… there's so much I want to tell you! So much that hasn't been said!"
"Ten," she murmured. "Ten?" "Six!"
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes!"

If you've not read "55-fiction," take a look. These crazy little stories are a riot. The trick is to create a real story--with plot, character, setting, conflict, and resolution--all in 55 words or less. I teach this as a "form" to my grade 12's. Moss actually runs a contest each year where he receives submissions and prints the best, e.g. this book. He has rules for writing 55-fiction in the back chapter. Try it. It's a fun challenge. Like a Sudoku puzzle for fiction.

Listening to this little book was the most fun I have had in a long time. Imagine telling a whole story in 55 words! There are some true masterpieces among these stories, some mysterious, some touching, some spiritual, some funny, some poignant, but nearly all containing an ironic twist at the end. I loved every minute of this book. It did not hurt that these little gems were read by some of the top narrators of all time, including Frank Muller, who was truly gifted.

Like with any collection of stories, some are great and some aren't, but most of these stories were fantastic, especially considering that they all fall under 55 words. Speaking from personal experience, writing a good short story is hard. Writing one under 55 words is insanely difficult, so I applaud all of the writers, even the ones with the weaker stories. My favorite stories were the ones listed under "With Murder in Mind," "Yonder," and "Further Voices."

Perhaps the most unique book in my collection, all the stories in this collection are fifty-five words in length.
It may be hard for most people to think a story can be told in such a short verse, but to quote Lucy from the
Peanuts comic strip, “A man was born. He lived and died. The end,” and agreeing with Linus that was the
shortest story I have ever heard. The collection of fifty-five word verses have it all, murder, love, horror and
suspense.

There isn't much for me to say about this book other than I really enjoyed the concept of it, and I'll be using it in my classroom in the future. Sure, there were stories I didn't care for, but they were over before I knew it. Most had a fun twist at the end, and forcing the authors into the 55-word limit was a great way to get a quick story out of a short read. You'll fly through this one and there is plenty of room for re-reading.

No time to examine the philosophic implications. Customers, buzzing with excitement, hovered near the piece. He wrapped up a deal quickly.
