Cassiel was once a powerful Djinn, until she took a stand and had humanity forced upon her. Since that time she has bared witness to imminent human destruction – experienced love, pain and loss, and gained an unbreakable connection with the human warden, Luis, and his niece Isabel.
When a deranged and ruthless Djinn called Pearl set out to kidnap warden children and harness their untapped powers for her own means, Cass was on the front lines with Luis – fighting to rescue young Isabel, but also...more

Conclusion of second (sidequel) series in the Weather Warden universe. I was just snarky about these books, so I'd better back up and say why I read them. Answer one: I started the series and I usually finish what I start. This is a lie. I've dropped plenty of urban-fantasy serieses after one or two books.
Better answer: these books are really good at kicking the protagonists' heinies. The characters are human -- magically gifted, but human. (Ignore book 2 in the first series, that's temporary.)...more

As it turns out, without her power, Cassiel can't do a thing to protect the ones she loves. Pearl is too powerful, the end of the world has begun, and the sentient soul of Earth has awakened--and it has decided to wipe out humanity. Entire cities are being wiped out, and the Wardens are desperate for help, even if this help comes from Pearl and the children she has twisted to her own ends. Cassiel finds herself fighting against the immortal creatures she once called her brothers and sisters, mak...more
Spoiler Alert! Unbroken is the fourth and final installment in the Outcast series by Rachel Caine. The book picks up shortly after the events of Unseen with Cassiel, Luis, Isabel and Esmeralda counting their losses from the previous battle. Isabel has changed as a result of the manipulation and exploitation she experienced at the hands of the malevolent Pearl. Cassiel and Luis can only guess at the extent of the abuse she suffered. With her new powers and a maturity beyond her six years, Isabel...more
The last book in the Outcast Season series ties in with the events that took place in Total Eclipse, which is the last book in the Weather warden series. Cassiel and Luis are trying to find a way to stop Pearl but first they must contend with the natural disasters Mother Earth is causing. On top of that the Djinn are under Mother Earth's thrall and they've been instructed to destroy cities & towns and to also kill all the wardens.

OMG! I was not aware til I finished the book, that Rachel Caine is ending The Outcast series with Unbroken! But what an ending!! It went right alongside her Weather Warden series, so we get to see Joanne and David again! Yay!
While that was fun and knowing what the fate of the world would be, there was still a lot left unknown! Cass still has to deal with Pearl. And do her best for Isabel, who was traumatized by Pearl. Yet Isabel, is the smallest of the problems. It seems the Wardens need her and...more

My English review
I think it’s always quite sad to get into the last book of a series we enjoy a lot. We always hope the novel will have a real end to the story. With all the answers of course and without disappointing us. I confess I haven’t read yet the Weather Warden series that is in the same world. But I’m now very curious to read it to learn more about this whole universe.
This volume concretizes everything we wanted. Well, the war is finally here and hell breaks loose. C...more

Unbroken by Rachel Caine is wicked, dangerous and packed full of action. I absolutely love this series- Unbroken is book four. Any of these novels could be read as a stand alone, though I wouldn't recommend it because each one is wonderfully entertaining. Caine's writing is just riveting- she knows how to vividly tell a story.

This final book in the Outcast Season series is pretty dark. It's the Apocalypse after all but be prepared for a lot of death/horror/casual evil as a result. Doesn't mean it's not good - because it is - but it's dark. And heavy. Cass really grows in this book and you feel how deeply this affects her as a result.
I'm sad this is the last of the Wardens. With the Weather Wardens series over and this offshoot one over, it feels like a end of a very interesting world. I think there's more story here...more

Cassiel, Luis and Isabella are back, and the struggle for Earth's survival—for humanity's very continuation—is still on going. As the planet is literally pulled apart, destroyed piece by piece, and the Wardens are trying to fight off the Djinn's attacks, another enemy starts to take advantage of the upheaval. Cassiel knows that even if they survive the attacks from the Mother, they won't...more

Fourth in the Outcast Season urban fantasy series revolving around Cassiel, a former Djinn made human.
My Take
It reads as though the series may be complete even though Caine does provide future threat material for some of Cassiel's actions. It may well simply mean the end of our focus on Cassiel and Luis within the Weather Wardens. It certainly sheds a wee bit more light on Ashan's true purpose. Totally unexpected.

3.5 stars. There was a lot that I liked about it, more than not, but there was some awkwardness too. I still really like Cass and her attitude, it's nice to have a strong urban fantasy character who's badass but not a sarcastic snarkfest for a change (not that I don't love that when done well!). Luis is a strong partner for her and I really enjoyed in this series, as in Caine's Weather Warden series, the way that she was able to maintain a strong relationship between the characters while still l...more
And so here we are at the end of the world. Sadly, I could not care less at this point and just want this to be over. To me, this book felt like 300 pages of these characters running around, arms flailing and wailing at the top of their lungs, and terrified. Those moments are great but when it’s less a moment and more the entire darn book – the reader is left needing a Valium and a nice quiet lie-down.

“He’s right. If anything is to survive, we have to risk everything. Everyone. There are no safe places left.”
Finishing Unbroken by Rachel Caine has made me a little sad. The Weather Warden series can be traced back to my early Urban Fantasy days, along with The Dresden Files and the Anita Blake series. I have followed it for years. It’s hard to say goodbye to a world that has given me so much enjoyment, especially a world that was so unique. Even after all these years, seeing so many different P...more

im guessing the weather warden series joins up with this one - and tells things from Joanne's POV, which would be interesting, i'd like to see how she survived.
the ending to this book was a joke and made the whole series pretty much redundant, which is a shame cause Outcast Season is one of my faves. maybe Caine just didnt know how to end it??
the end was a little too HEA for me, like im all for HEA but this was just a bit to far (view spoiler)...more

From what I read in a couple of reviews, Unbroken ties up the events of Total Eclipse as well. I don't read Weather Warden series, so I don't know what's going on there, but several characters (that I assume) are from that series appear here as well, like Joanne, David, and a couple of other Djinns. This series, though, has always been more about Cassiel and her journey to learn about humanity (as she becomes human for defying Ashan's order) and her fight against the evil Pearl.

If you haven't read any of the other Outcast novels-----> DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER.
I don't think I have ever loved Caine's work more than I do now. I've read all of her novels, but the Outcast Season series is my favorite thus far. This is the best conclusion we could have asked for-if we had thought to ask for it. The series is about a former Djinn who was forced into human form by her leader so she would follow his orders to kill all of humanity- reason being that a super evil being (a forme...more

God, this book was a meat grinder. I’ve already complained once on the mortality rate in this series, but this time Rachel Caine went big. As in millions of people dead! I don’t remember that it was that bad in Total Eclipse considering that it is the same battle we are talking about.
As another book in this series “Unbroken” was very good, but as a final installation it didn’t meet my expectations. Yes, the battles were epic, the decisions hard and cataclysm tragic. The problem was I’ve read To...more

Unbroken is the fourth and final book in the Outcast Season series and in the Weather Warden time line runs alongside the last book Total Eclipse. Rachel Caine's Weather Warden and Outcast books are some of my favourite urban fantasy stories and they are ones I would highly recommend but you should really read the books in order, starting with the Weather Warden series and then following with these books. You could read the Outcast series without having read the other one first but you'd be miss...more

It's all come to a head, the story line, the epic battle and the end of an incredible series. "Unbroken" is the final chapter in an incredible adventure. The story begins shortly after the last book ends. Cassie, Luis, Ibby and oddly enough the half snake girl, Esmeralda have just managed to recover from the previous battle and are together.

The last of the series (for now). The ending was ok, she just didn't explain that much, and only had it from Cassiel's point of view so you didn't get to see or know too much. It was mostly a happy ending, for the main people at least, not so much for the rest of the world.
I remember the first two book's being so awesome (I think I gave those five stars.), but this one and the third weren't so good, they're not terrible, but it just didn't feel like Caine put that much into them. She said in th...more

I had forgotten how much i loved Cassie and Luis and this book boy how much this book reminded me. A perfect closing for a perfectly capturing story. Cassie is perfectly logical; quite a feat in most female characters for reasons i know not of. Luis is deliciously sarcastic Rachid is amusing and Joanne fits like a glove in this story. Perfect combo i could gush till morning but i need a new book its only 9pm.

This is the last Weather Warden book (sniff) Cassiel's story overlaps with that of the last Joanne Baldwin novel (Total Eclipse) I will miss this series, but where can you go as a writer after you've done Armageddon?
Lots of action, good characters... Sometimes it seemed as if Armageddon was getting in the way of the Pearl plot, but I think that's because of the overlapping nature of the two series.

A satisfying end to Cassiel's story. It also tied things up nicely with the parallel Weather Warden series. I especially liked getting the cameo appearances of the Weather Warden Joanne and her djinn husband David, characters I really love. I didn't like Cassie, the exiled djinn, very well in the first book, but she grew on me through the series. I'm not sure if there is more to come in this world, but I hope so.
I was, fortunately or not, able to read the conclusions to Rachel Caine's weather warden series in a back-to-back manner. As this was also the first time the series really intertwined, that worked out well. I've enjoyed these series a great deal, and am glad Ms Caine still has at least one series I enjoy that hasn't concluded yet.
