I enjoyed The Dowry so wanted to read another by Walter Keady. In this novel, it appears that Keady presents his own reasons for leaving the priesthood disguised as fiction. The title character is a nun who leaves the convent at the time of her father's death. She inherits her father's farm and has an child without being married. Her actions affect many other people in her small Irish town. Very interesting novel, but I'm afraid the main character's motivation was confused and a bit unbelievable ...more

Mary McGreevy leaves the Convent to care for her dying Father, and so this tale begins. Why and how she left and rescinded her vows to the sisterhood, the friends she makes and the circumstances surrounding how she makes them, and her big "secret", are the ingredients to an enjoyable read that will keep a smile on your face throughout the book. I really am happy I found this little gem!

A nun comes home to nurse her father for his final days on earth. After his death, she decides to stay and take care of her father's farm. Soon Mary McGreevy is the cause of gossip in the 1950s Irish town because she is with child and refuses to name the father. The townspeople speculate constantly about who the father of the child is. Well-written, kept me guessing to the end.
