Well, I've decided to give up on Eclipse. I'm just not into it, at all, and with about 150 pages left to read I just can't muster the enthusiasm to finish it. I still don't really understand what the conflict is. Shirley has spent way too much time introducing characters and the history of the world, and not enough time developing interesting situations and drama. I found this off a list of cyberpunk books back in the late 80s. This is the first of a 3 part epic telling the story of the rise of fascist powers in post-WWIII Europe. It reminds me a great deal of the new Battlestar Galactica series in tone and pacing. This is one of those books I reread every few years and will never not own a copy of it.

My #1 book-of-warning about the take-over of the civilized world by Neo-Con crypto fascist Christians. Very fun, very rock-and-roll, and seems more possible every day.
