Hmmm, I noticed most of the reviews here don’t go into any sort of plot here. I couldn’t figure it out at first but now that I’m almost finished with this reread I get it. There isn’t one.

Well, that’s not quite true. There were threads of plot, the vampire council has come to town to rape and pillage the beasties, but really this book is all about Anita gaining power, dealing with her two lover boys and gaining new puppy doggies and kitties who follow her every command. It’s bloody, it’s sexual...more

Out of the entire series, one of my favorite characters is Nathaniel. So when I realized that this is the book he would be introduced into .. I was like woo hoo!

Ok, now that I have that out of my system, I can move forward with the tid bits of this and that’s I have for this book.

Another brilliant piece of work by Laurell Hamilton! The twists in this book are amazing, and they end up playing through to the end of the series. It’s neat to be able to reread a series and pick up on all the little...more

"Why does everything with you have to be so [darned] serious?"

A fire chief approaches Anita Blake to let her know about vampires going up in flames. She notes that then heads off on a date with boyfriend and Undead Master of the City, Jean-Claude. But Anita never can have a date without a million things going off at once. Richard is off his rocker and creating a vacuum in his pack, one that Anita as his lucoi must fix. Jean-Claude is being pressured to join the Council--or face being destroyed....more

Although some readers didn't like this book as much as the earlier ones (due to the increased sexual violence) I found I liked it quite a lot (not the violence, the story around it). There is an increased need to suspend my disbelief, though, and that is not a good sign. I was scared in that wet, dangerous basement . . . and I wish Hamilton would spare a little more backstory for some of the police/fireman characters. I'd like to know more about Dolph, and Wren, the fireman new to this book, see...more

Seriously, Laurell K. Hamilton used to write good vampire-slayer novels. Now she writes erotica. Don't get me wrong, I like erotica as much as the next guy (or gal), but when I want to read a vampire slayer novel, I want to read a vampire slayer novel!!! Damn you, Anita Blake.

The first several novels in the Anita Blake series are great. Funny, scary, a touch gory and a touch sexy. As you read each book, you can really see the character development as Anita becomes more sure of herself and more comfortable with the "monsters". However, some the later books have deteriorated into little more than soft porn for women. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

However, I feel it cheapens the series, which features a great role model in Anita as a women who has accepted...more

Well I'll come clean and say that I like Anita Blake: I felt this was a 3.5. I'd read warnings about book 6 onwards but to be honest the story is in keeping with the narrative developments in the previous books: rotting vampire corpses, dodgy sex scenes and power scuffles by night and a sulky but slightly more muscly Richard by day assisted by a smattering of physically attentive werecreatures.

The basic story line is a visit form the nasty Vampire council to put Jean Claude in his place. The su...more

I guess this one might have been a three but I still found aspects of it really annoying, so it didn't quite make it. Especially the fact that the whole thing with the firebug eventually came to nothing and she didn't really have the cops in it much.
I'd prefer that sex wsn't so key to the storyline but as that seems to be Hamilton's thing so I doubt that's gonna happen, however I will still hope for a time when all thier problems aren't solved by sleeping with one another. Also can't help feelin...more

And another series with huge potential that crashes and burns - and I can't decide if it does it in a ball of flames, or a sputter of wet firecrackers. OMG. Let's talk about the characters I used to love. I had SUCH the high hopes that I was going to go through this whole series as happy with the remainder as I was with the first couple in the series. Sigh.

Let's see. Anita is working with Jean Claude, as usual. Things are going to hell in a handcart, as usual, as the `Vampire Over...more

At the onset this book seemed like a bunch of unrelated events. Vampire Council coming to down, wereleopards getting maimed, an arsonist burning buildings, but if you've any experience with this series you know that nothing's unrelated.

I like the fact that along with the Anita Blake character growing with each book, so do the complexities of the various preternatural sects that inhabit Blake's universe; vampire politics, lycanthrope pack mentality, etc.

If you're reading this review then you've p...more

Fangs for the Fantasy
The Vampire Council, the supreme authority over all things vampire, is in town and they are not happy with Jean-Claude. It seems that Mr. Oliver was the Councillor known as the Earthmover. Traditionally the vampire that kills a Councillor takes his place on the Council.

But Jean-Claude doesn’t want the job and is doubtful of his own ability to survive at such a high level against such ancient and powerful vampires. Unfortunately, that’s not a view shared by all the Councillors, some of whom fear...more

This would be the second of third time I've read Burnt Offerings. I'm slowly going through a read-through of the Anita Blake series - it's been awhile since I've read them all. In trying to avoid spoilers I'll just touch on characters as from here on out while there is a plot, the Anita Blake novels are extremely character driven.

Anita has now entered the world of lycanthropes which tends to be a very different world than that of the vampires. Lycanthropes have a much more present sexual nature...more

Fire can be a beautiful and deadly thing, Anita knows this especially as she has to deal with figuring out the who's and why's of the fire bugs bombing the city.

We get a little bit of a teaser with Asher in this book, and personally ,while he might not have been my favorite of men on her dance card, I have always felt so sad for him. Asher just seems so lost and alone, in constant need of assurance that he is beautiful and not to be tossed aside because of his scars.

We are also introduce to Nat...more

This is the 7th book of the Anita Blake series and this is where the focus of the series shifts dramatically from being around the criminal and police aspect and more towards sex and the law of the supernatural work. In the beginning, Anita always held her distance and sex was never part of the equation; however, as the series progress, she becomes more involved not only with the vampires but werewolves as well. In this book, when we see how Anita uses power of being Lupa to heal and sex's becom...more

There's a lot to like about the Anita Blake series, and a lot to hate. I've been reading them back to back, so I'm up to my eyeballs in both right now.

Anita is a pretty great character - partly because she is so annoying. She is tough and graceless, incredibly violent yet incredibly loyal, a wiseass who never, ever lets go of her schtick.

At first I was really into her dilemmas - is she becoming a monster, what is the difference between the monsters and the people? When does she stop being a pr...more

Where is all the sex reviewers keep talking about. There are some sexually charged scenes but everything is really tame thus far. This is however my favorite so far. I absolutely loved the fact that Jean-Claude was in almost every scene. I think that he is sometimes portrayed as too weak but I still love me some JC!

I am glad that Anita realized it wasn't that Richard is a monster but that she was afraid of wanting to join the pack feasting on Marcus. Now, she just needs to explain that to Richa...more

Burnt Offerings is the seventh book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K Hamilton. I enjoyed this book so much that I can’t find the right words to describe how I felt when reading it.

From the beginning I loved the interaction between Anita and Jean Claude (he’s my favourite main character if you haven’t guess from previous reviews) and the more intimate scenes between the two. I can’t wait to see how their relationship develops in the coming books in the series as Anita seems...more

I loved the introduction of the council and vampire politics. The pack drama was also great. The mystery takes a back seat to the everything else, but it is integrated into the overall plot, so it wasn't too out of place. I could read about vampire issues and were squabbles all day and night, Laurell K. Hamilton makes it so interesting. Another great installment into a great series. The series starts to get a bit sexual here. Anita may not sleep with more than one person, but she will make out w...more

A compelling mixture of fantasy, mystery/suspense, and romance, this series defies genre categorization.

Anita Blake is a kickass kind of woman. She's an animator (she can raise the dead --this is where the zombies come in) who is currently dating a sexy vampire named Jean Claude (who happens to be Master of the City). (This is despite the fact that Anita has quite a reputation as a vampire-slayer.) The lovers are still linked, magically, and (in Anita's case, at least) emotionally, to Richard, t...more

Another quick and entertaining read, though at the end I was rather surprised at how little had happened, and how little time passed during the 392 pages of this book. I mean, I'm pretty sure that this whole novel spans about 3 days worth of time, and would have spanned less, except that Hamilton had Anita unconscious for a whole 24 hour period for a very believable reason. Richard's thwarted heart plays a constant role in this one, obviously, and I guess since all the action is so close it make...more

Another great book in the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. “Burnt offerings” is a read that I will not forget soon. Dark and sensual, there were times that it was disturbing and way too cruel for my taste. Nevertheless, as always, the writing and the world-building are amazing and I enjoyed every minute while reading it.

I have to admit that the last books are way different from the first ones. Of course, there is always a very good plot but now there is a lot of sensuality and darkness...more

Before I talk about the good things in this book, I must first discuss the negatives.

As with any Anita Blake book, there is always too much going on. And this particular book wasn’t an exception.

There were the firefighters, the council, the drama between Anita and Richard, the drama between Anita and Dolph. The drama between the were-leopards and the werewolves. The lupa drama, the triumvirate drama. A whole fucking genre of morality issues. Should I be fucking a dead guy? Should I be in love wi...more

Probably my favorite in this series so far, Burnt Offerings is another classic Hamilton - packed with danger, action, bullets, and a smart mouth or two.

I like Anita's choices in this book, and while I can appreciate a good, tough heroine, I like that she's mellowing out a little. I loved getting to see more of the world of lycanthropes and the world of vampires, and how each one works - hope this continues (and I think it will!). While dealing with Richard was sometimes just painful to read (I...more

In this book a mysterious murder case is in the foreground not so much, but even more the vampires themselves. The high advice has come “to force” Jean-Claude on his place. When this declines, the high advice isn’t very amused.

I have liked this story very much. The high advice, on behalf by vampires with very impressive abilities, exercises an immense fascination. The new characters are well described again prominent and particularly Asher has woken a lot of pleasure with me. It is a lot of magi...more

This book marks the first appearance of Nathaniel the were-leopard, with his lavender eyes and vanilla scent. I'm tempted to take two stars off the rating just for that.... Otherwise, this is still classic Anita Blake, before it took a dive off a precipice in Narcisssus in Chains. Anita's life had gotten much more complicated in the last book where she finally broke the books-long sexual tension and became Jean-Claude's lover. Naturally that has all sorts of fall out as does her taking out Gabri...more

So first of all this was my first reading experience on my new Kobo Ereader and man was I impressed. Yes, I have a Kindle already and no, I didn't sell or exchange it, I still have that aswell. There is no logical reason for owning both, I know, but I will say that I always wanted the Kobo before I ever got the Kindle but they were unavailable in Ireland. Until now that is. So this Anita Blake book was my first reading experience on aforementioned Kobo and it was just such a pleasant reading exe...more
