The plot, characters, and setting all worked together to make this book a good read. Having been part of the racetrack crowd and having lived in Charles Town, WV, many years ago, I found the descriptions of the area, the track, and the business of racing rang true. Meeks is obviously someone who has been a part of this scene. A fast-paced thriller mixed with a particularly sweet romance. Both Bogey and Becky were full of character, and I also liked that the horses were as full of character as the humans. (Well, horses are.) My only criticism was that Meeks failed to write ‘The End.’ I would have been happy to read on, and looked for more, even though it was a perfectly suitable ending. 4 stars instead if 5 only because Goodreads' definitions are more severe than Amazon etc. It was not quite 'amazing' maybe, but I lik ...more
